Abstract

This study aims to investigate the Chinese perceptions about the traditional Confucius concepts mianzi/lian ‘face’ in the context of the world that is changing. In particular, the study focuses on how such perceptions are reflected in their interpersonal communication. Data was collected through direct semi-structured interviews with the respondents, guided by a set of questions regarding the situations they might hypothetically find themselves. Shanghai was chosen as the site for this study because, among other places in China, it has undergone considerable changes. 100 Shanghainese were involved in the study; 50 were city dwellers and 50 villagers, representing their various social backgrounds. The data were analysed by using the Chinese cultural notions underlying the concepts of face: relational, communal, hierarchical, and moral. Analyses show that the respondents often avoid conflicts with their interlocutors, even if they were put in very unfortunate circumstances. These face-favouring acts are indicative of their closed observance of the norms and hence the concepts of face, by which they could gain, maintain, and enhance their own face. In return, they would be regarded as members of the society with polite behaviours and with other good moral characters. The study concludes that although China is changing, the conceptions and practices of the traditional concepts mianzi/lian “face” among Chinese have remained constant. This is because into these concepts are attached the most basic concepts of humanity; the absence of the concepts of face in the mind of human beings can mean the loss of humanity as a whole.

Abstract

The Wisdom of Language A Pragmatic Study on the Profile of the Post-New Order Era Mass Media Language. “Total Reformasi!” is the slogan circulated in the public discourse of the post-New Order era. All kinds of condemnation, grievances, and anger have been raised in various discourses, from formal to informal dialogues. In such an era, people’s collective memory is mostly associated with uncontrollable events, and it is eventually represented in the discourse of “the overdosed Reformasi” (Reformasi yang kebablasan). A word, phrase, and sentence basically have the potential of expressing both referential and contextual meanings. From a pragmatic point of view, a word, phrase, or sentence has a capacity to express either wise or unwise intentions. “Unwise intention” in the context of this research is defined as an act of transgressing or violating the ethics and etiquettes of a society. How can the discourse of Reformasi be constructed wisely? Is it necessary to appropriate unwise vocabulary in public discourses? Who holds the responsibility for fostering public wisdom? The wisdom of language has nothing to do whatsoever with manipulative acts in information dissemination. The wisdom of language relates to strategies of choosing certain linguistic features. Wisdom is a collective responsibility. A wise language would not be able to fully exist unless all of the related parties and resulting events make a concerted effort towards wisdom. Wisdom does not involve itself in the tug of war between the right and freedom of participating in discursive formations.

Abstract

This article attempts to identify factors affecting participation in payment of irrigation service fees. There are five variables comprising demographic and economic of land variables were tested to find the variables that influenced the participation significantly. The five variables tested consisted of age and formal education as demographic variables; land productivity, land size, and land tenure as the economic of land variables. The results showed that formal education (demographic variable) had positive relationship and land size (economic of land variable) had negative relationship with the participation. Positive relationship between formal education and participation in payment of irrigation service fees meant that the participation increased as farmers’ education increased. Meanwhile, negative relationship between land size and the participation in payment of irrigation service fees showed that the farmers’ participation would increase as the land size owned by farmers decreased. In other words, participation in payment of irrigation service fees was higher among farmers with small lands rather than that among farmers with large lands.

Abstract

Freedom of the press and freedom of expression are formally guaranteed on the Constitution of Japan, therefore to be expected that the press and people in general have their independency vis a vis the state. The Japanese media people feel that those freedoms have been practiced, and the particular article of the constitution has been regarded as a norm by the media. But some opinions have also emerged that freedom of the press in Japan is in fact controlled in some ways by those in power. This notion is perhaps related to the practice of “self-censorship” that has been commonly thought of the Japanese media. This practice is seen in this work as closely linked to Japan’s traditional cultural philosophy. The Japan media make it as an “obligation” for themselves to voluntarily regard things related to the imperial family as something very sensitive to be touched upon. There are limitations that cannot be breached. Violations will mean that they will be sanctioned by other fellow members of the’ kisha kurabbu’ or socially punished by the public. Sometimes self-censorship is implemented by the media out of their fear of right wingers or the ruling party.

Abstract

The relationship between natural resources and development in the so-called developing world is important. The question posed in this paper is how do the different types of natural resources; oil, LNG, and forests affect the broader environment-development relations? This study shows that the presence of natural resources especially the oil and LNG industries played a major role in the Indonesian national development. In the context of Evans conceptual continuum, Indonesia has both the elements of predatory and developmental state viewed from the environment-development relations.
