Abstract

This study aims to identify the ideology underlying the translation of culturally charged words in tourism booklets published by the Wonderful Indonesia website. This study aims to analyze the translation ideology and the equivalence of culturally loaded words found in the tourism brochure of the Wonderful Indonesia official website, specifically the Yogyakarta edition. The objective is to examine how translation strategies—whether domesticating or foreignizing—impact the level of equivalence in conveying cultural meanings, and how these choices reflect the translator's underlying ideological stance in representing Indonesian culture to international audiences. This research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing text analysis as its method. Data were collected through a literature study and content analysis of tourism booklets available on the Wonderful Indonesia website. The analysis process involved identifying culturally charged words and the ideologies present in the translation, taking into account the cultural context and purpose of communication. The results show that the translation of culturally charged words in tourism booklets serves not only as a communication tool, but also as a means to build a positive image of Indonesia. The underlying ideology of the translation reflects efforts to attract international tourists by emphasising the uniqueness and richness of Indonesian culture. However, there are also challenges in maintaining the authenticity of cultural meanings when translated into foreign languages. It is hoped that this research will contribute to the understanding of the relationship between translation, culture, and ideology in the context of tourism. The findings are particularly relevant for stakeholders in the tourism industry, as they inform the design of effective promotional materials that are sensitive to local cultural values and preferences. Thus, this research is expected to serve as a reference for the development of more inclusive and representative tourism communication strategies.

Abstract

While deixis has long been recognized as a key feature of everyday communication for the way it connects language to its immediate context, there is still little research that looks at how it works in contemporary music. This study was designed to investigate the representation of deixis in Taylor Swift’s Folklore album, drawing on Yule's (1966) categorizations. A total of 1,160 occurrences of deixis were systematically collected and analyzed through a mixed-methods approach. The analysis demonstrated that deixis in Folklore serves as a narrative device that situates stories and emotions within particular times, spaces, and also social relations. Among the three types, personal deixis is the most prominent type, demonstrating the album’s clear orientation toward social interaction. Temporal deixis appears at a moderate level, pointing to an interest in time-related contexts, while spatial deixis is used least often, revealing a smaller emphasis on locational aspects. These distributions further highlight how personal and discourse deixis operate as the central mechanisms for creating coherence and sustaining the contextual grounding of the album’s narratives.

Abstract

In married life, women often experience a significant transition that can leave them in shock. This study aims to describe the portrayal of women in the household in the short story "Perempuan Itu Pernah Cantik " by Mashdar Zainal and to examine the cultural elements that influence this portrayal. The analysis of women's images and cultural aspects is conducted using critical discourse analysis by Sara Mills and Ruth Wodak. The research employs a qualitative method. The findings reveal that the portrayal of women and cultural elements in "Perempuan Itu Pernah Cantik " remains highly relevant to contemporary women's lives and contributes to many household disputes. According to Sara Mills' perspective, the portrayal of women in the short story is categorized into six images: women associated with beauty; women who seek validation and praise; women who prioritize emotions; women who are dependent on men; women with maternal instincts; and women who compare their single life with their married life. Furthermore, according to Ruth Wodak, the cultural elements shaping the image of women in the short story fall into three categories: the culture of women as managers of domestic affairs, the culture of women as gentle, and the culture that considers child-rearing a woman's duty.

Abstract

Questions serve a range of functions that go far beyond just seeking or requesting information. These different functions of questions depend on the context of the conversation. This study attempts to examine the various pragmatic functions of questions in the movie A Man Called Otto. The data were all the interrogative sentences in the movie. The data were analyzed using the framework proposed by Fareh and Moussa (2008), which identifies 35 distinct pragmatic functions of interrogative sentences. The findings of this study indicate that a total of 241 questions were identified, which consist of 132 (55%) yes/no questions and 109 (45%) WH questions. These questions were used to serve 21 pragmatic functions. Seeking/requesting information and seeking confirmation are the most frequent functions, making up 22.8% and 17.4% of the whole data, respectively. The analysis further shows that the identification of functions relies heavily on the context in which they are used. These findings contribute to linguistics studies by highlighting the diverse functions of questions. Pedagogically speaking, these findings should be taken into account by educators to enhance language learners’ communicative competence.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the morphological process of adding the derivational combination affix {di-} and {-kan} in Indonesian. This qualitative type of research uses data in the form of sentences containing words with the combination affix {di-} and {-kan}. The data sources are the Tempo Magazine (26 August 2024 edition) entitled Jungkir Balik Balik Raja Jawa, Jurnal Ranah volume 12 number 1 in 2023, textbook Sejarah Kelas 12 SMA Kurikulum Merdeka in 2022, and essay collection Nggragas! by Triyanto Triwikromo in 2021. The method for providing data uses the observation method with note-taking techniques, then analyzed sequentially by using the distributional method, immediate constituent, deletion, and expansion techniques. The results of this research are that all the data shows that the combination affix {di-} and {-kan} changes the word class into a verb form. The changes that occur are not only changes in word classes and their meanings but some only experience changes in meaning. Changes in word class and meaning occur in changes from noun to verb (N → V), adjective to verb (Adj → V), adverb to verb (Adv → V), numerals to verb (Num → V), conjunction to verb (Conj → V). Changes in meaning occur when active verbs become intensive passive verb, and active verbs become causative passive verb.

Abstract

This study examines the semantic structure and cultural conceptualization of traditional medicinal lexicon in the Osing community of Banyuwangi. The research addresses two main questions: (1) how the componential structure distinguishes each medicinal lexeme, and (2) how cultural conceptualization is represented through these lexemes. Using a qualitative approach with an ethno-semantic method, data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with native speakers. The analysis integrates lexical meaning, componential analysis, and cultural interpretation. The findings reveal that the Osing medicinal lexicon is organized into four primary subdomains: herbal remedies, physical treatment methods, ritual objects and media, and supernatural healing practices. Each subdomain demonstrates distinctive semantic components that reflect different modes of intervention, ranging from direct bodily manipulation to symbolic and spatial protection. Beyond lexical classification, the study shows that the Osing conceptualizes illness as a relational phenomenon involving the body, space, and non-physical entities. The body is understood as an open and manipulable space, while illness may originate from both physical and metaphysical sources. Consequently, healing practices integrate physical and ritual actions within a unified cultural system. These findings highlight that the medicinal lexicon not only encodes linguistic meaning but also represents a complex cultural model of health, emphasizing the role of ethno-semantics in uncovering local knowledge systems.
