The data sources for this research were taken from 21 online news articles during August-September 2023, with the keyword that thesis was not mandatory. The data were collected using the corpus method utilizing the AntConc application version 3.5.9. Once the data were collected, four stages were performed: data reduction, data presentation, data verification, and data analysis. The results of data analysis was formally presented in the form of diagrams and tables and informally in the form of descriptions or descriptions. This study found the difference in the frequency of the three prepositions was quite enormous; the preposition ‘di’ was found 192 words, the preposition ‘pada’ was counted 60 words, and the preposition ‘dalam’ was 119 words. The colligation pattern of prepositions ‘di’, ‘pada’, and ‘dalam’ was mostly followed by non-persona nouns and least followed by nominal phrases or persona nouns. Abstract

This research discusses the euphemism in the oral statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in 2014 at the Public Sitting of the International Court of Justice on The Legal Consequences Arising from The Policies and Practices of Israel in The Occupied Palestine. This research aimed to find out how types of euphemisms are used and find out their purpose. The method used was a qualitative method with data in the form of Retno Marusudi's verbal statement. The data were analyzed using the warren framework to determine the type and function of the euphemism uttered. This research resulted in Compounding (10.5%), derivation (10.5%), Blends (5.26%), acronyms (5.26%), and abbreviations (5.26%) as part of word formation. Phonemic modification is represented by abbreviations, appearing once at 5.26%. The speech utilized a variety of semantic innovation strategies: particularization, implication, metaphor, metonymy, and understatement each appear twice, accounting for 10.53% each. Reversal/irony and overstatement were used once, each constituting 5.26%. The way euphemistic functions were distributed in Marsudi's discourse showed that coherent, provocative, underhanded, and protecting euphemisms were all used in moderation. The percentage of protective euphemisms was 21.1%; the percentage of underhanded and cohesive euphemisms is 15.8%; the percentage of provocative euphemisms was 31.6%; the percentage of uplifting and ludic euphemisms was less, at 5.3% and 10.5%, respectively. The use of euphemisms aims to convey a strong yet diplomatic message, highlight political and legal sensitivities, and emphasize urgency and injustice so that the message conveyed remains firm yet expressed subtly, clarifying Indonesia's diplomatic position while provoking understanding and emotional responses from the audience.

Abstract

This study aimed at mapping the morphological changes, functions, categories, syntactic roles, and linguistic tendencies in Willy language. This research employed a descriptive-qualitative method incorporated by the morphosyntax approach. Data were collected through document study techniques. The analysis focused on 23 sentences from Willy language, a colloquial form used by ‘jamet’ speakers on X (Twitter). The findings showed that the morphological changes include prefix modification, syllable reduction, spelling deviation, abbreviation, and sound alteration. Most sentences performed an inversion pattern, where the predicate precedes the subject (P-S), with a predominance of simple sentences. The writing style resembled that of a drama script, leading to a hierarchical structure. A few coordinate compound sentences were also identified. The main word categories include nouns, verbs, and adverbs, with a notable presence of phatic expressions and interjections. The predominant roles observed were agentive, activity, object (sufferer), and instrument/manner. Overall, the linguistic patterns indicate: (1) dominance of inverted and simple sentences; (2) a majority of noun, verb, and adverb classes; (3) scarcity of conjunctions and adjectives; (4) minimal use of prepositions; (5) inclusion of phatic expressions, interjections, and onomatopoeia; (6) a writing style similar to drama scripts; and (7) phonological and morphological transformations.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the translation quality and cultural adaptation aspects in a translated movie of "From the Ashes" (2024). Starring Alshaima Tayeb, Khayria Abu Laban, and Adwa Fahad, this movie depicted how Saudi Arabian women navigated social-cultural dimensions while dealing with surrounding conflicts. This movie was chosen due to its idiomatic expressions in Arabic dialogue, which were translated into Indonesian subtitles for Netflix. Employing a descriptive qualitative method and translation evaluation approach, this research revealed several translation inaccuracies related to the adaptation from Arabic to Indonesian. In terms of accuracy, the researcher found the inaccuracies in conveying the intended messages to the target language, resulting in a misunderstanding. Regarding acceptability, the researcher discovered a lack of naturalness in the transfer of the source text into the target language. This is evident in the use of inappropriate diction. Furthermore, the use of ineffective sentences hinders comprehension.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing and describe the illocutionary speech acts found in a movie “Jatuh Cinta Seperti di Film-Film” using a pragmatic approach. The study was based on Searle's theory, which categorizes illocutionary speech acts into five types: assertive, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative. The object of this research was the movie “Jatuh Cinta Seperti di Film-Film”, directed by Yandy Laurens. The research data consisted of dialogues or utterances in the movie that contain illocutionary speech acts. Based on its form, this research was qualitative, while in terms of purpose, it is descriptive. The method used was observation and note-taking, with the researcher acting as the primary research instrument. Based on data analysis, it was concluded that four types of illocutionary speech acts appear in the film: assertive, directive, expressive, and commissive. Assertive speech acts were the most frequently used, appearing in 148 utterances (58.5%), followed by directive speech acts with 72 utterances (28.46%), expressive speech acts with 29 utterances (11.46%), and commissive speech acts with 4 utterances (1.58%). These findings indicated that assertive speech acts are the most dominant in the film “Jatuh Cinta Seperti di Film-Film”. This dominance was due to the storyline, which focuses on the reunion of the two main characters, resulting in dialogues that often function to convey information, opinions, or statements. Meanwhile, the absence of declarative speech acts suggested that the movie does not focus on formal or institutional situations.

Abstract

The study aims to describe the textual, social cognitive, and social contextual dimensions that represent rejection of the development of Ibu Kota Nusantara on the news portals Metrotvnews.com and Viva.co.id in December 2023. This is motivated by the widespread controversy surrounding the development of the new capital city, Ibu Kota Nusantara, among the public. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, applying Teun van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis framework and Halliday's transitivity. The findings reveal that news discourse is constructed through specific topics and schemes related to the Ibu Kota Nusantara issue. Metrotvnews.com explicitly represents rejection by presenting the voices of various parties and aspects of society, thus reflecting a pro-citizen ideology. Meanwhile, Viva.co.id implicitly represents rejection, as it leans towards the dominant parties that support government policies. These differences in representation are closely related to social media cognition and the socio-political context towards the 2024 elections, which influence the production and dissemination of discourse to the public.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the structural form of the Javanese language, particularly its agglutinative morphology, which has the potential to exhibit morphosyntactically dynamic behavior, especially in verb constructions that serve as the core of a constituent. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach to examine the phenomenon as it exists in Javanese grammatical construction (Morphosyntactic Verb Construction). Exemplary and Distributional methods are used to analyse the data. The findings in this study show that verb construction in Javanese has the following pattern dynamics; (i) transitive active verb construction with morphological marker prefix {meN} with allomorphs {m-}, {n-}, {ng-}, and {ny-} and passive patterns into {di-}, {di-i}, {kok-}, and {tak-}; (ii) intransitive verb constructions with zero {Ø} morphemes; (iii) anti-passive ergative constructions with {ke-} and {ke-an} morphemes; and (iv) ergative with zero {Ø} constructions. The findings in this study also show that the dynamics of verb construction in Javanese are not limited to one type of grammatical behavior (typology); moreover, ergative typology appears to be a new tendency.

Abstract

Cross-cultural communication among international students presents specific strategies and challenges, particularly within the educational domain. The success of communication largely depends on the ability of international students to adapt and develop effective coping mechanisms in the host country. This study aims to investigate the strategies and coping mechanisms employed by international students during their learning experiences in Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative method was applied, involving two international student participants. The findings reveal several challenges in cross-cultural communication, mainly cultural differences that influence both verbal and non-verbal interactions. Data analysis was conducted through triangulation by comparing participants’ experiences with previous studies and relevant theories. This research provides an in-depth analysis of the challenges and coping strategies of international students, highlighting aspects that have not been extensively discussed in previous studies. The results are expected to serve as a valuable reference for future international students in navigating cross-cultural differences within Indonesian educational contexts.
