Abstract

Language and age is a sociolinguistic realm that discusses how language can distinguish a person's status in the context of age. Differences within human groups often arise due to age, which can give rise to variations in social dialects and provide distinctive characteristics within certain communities. This study tries to reveal the role of age in determining the use of language in the speech of characters in the film Keluarga Cemara. This research was conducted with a sociolinguistic approach using qualitative descriptive methods. This study found that language can distinguish humans into four groups: children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Language in children is characterized by word shrinkage and has a characteristic sound. In adolescence language has begun to vary and unique, adolescents are accustomed to presenting new languages that are created based on the results of their creativity. In adulthood is a phase when language begins to improve, because of its authority as an adult regularity, linguistic rules begin to be considered. In the elderly, communication competence begins to be low and turns into topics about medicine and physical.

Abstract

Phatic communication, a widespread yet often unnoticed language phenomenon, primarily serves to maintain social interactions rather than convey substantive information. This study investigated the use of phatic expressions among Indonesian and Australian students, examining how cultural backgrounds and social contexts influence their communication styles. Using a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) with both qualitative and quantitative methods, this research revealed significant differences between the two groups. Australian students frequently used phatic speech to initiate conversations, provided comfort, and expressed empathy, emphasizing respect and interpersonal connection. In contrast, Indonesian students tended to use phatic expressions to promote social harmony, engage in casual discourse, and offer interpersonal support, often focusing on group cohesion. Social variables, such as social status and distance, played a critical role in shaping the choice of phatic functions and forms, with both groups adapting their communication strategies based on these factors. The findings highlight the intricate relationship among culture, social dynamics, and language in phatic communication, offering a nuanced understanding that can enhance intercultural interactions, minimize misunderstandings, and improve communication effectiveness in multicultural settings. This research underscores the importance of considering cultural and social contexts when analyzing language use, contributing valuable insights for educators, linguists, and communication professionals aiming to foster more effective and harmonious interactions across diverse cultural landscapes.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of machine translation today is influenced by the progress in human intelligence. For instance, DeepL, as a translation machine, is considered highly accurate. The aim of this research was to analyze the accuracy of the translation of Nizar Qabbani's poem “Asyhadu An La Imra’atan Illa Anti” using Nababan's and Paul Ricoeur's theories. This study is qualitative in nature and employs a reading and note-taking method. Data analysis techniques followed Miles and Huberman's methods. Based on the research results, conclusions were drawn according to the research questions. Out of 18 datasets based on the 18 stanzas of Nizar Qabbani's poem “Asyhadu An La Imra’atan Illa Anti” translated using the AI-based DeepL Translator, 7 translations were categorized as low quality, 9 translations were categorized as less quality, and 2 translations were categorized as high quality. These results were obtained using Nababan's theory of translation accuracy. The translations produced by DeepL Translator for the poetry texts tended to be inconsistent, with many repeated words translated differently even in the same context. Further analysis using Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic theory to examine the ideology within the text revealed that the translations tended to be very rigid for poetic texts.
