Abstract

This study examined the relationship between public debt and economic growth by employing the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach developed by Pesaran and Shin (1999) in the ASEAN-5 from 1986 to 2020. This paper considered a time period wherein there exists an episode of economic uncertainties. The other variables used in this study are exchange rate, foreign exchange reserves, and world uncertainty index. The data were extracted from the World Development Indicators (WDI) of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It is essential to determine whether or not debt financing is a sound fiscal policy, particularly during an economic crisis, to protect a country’s fiscal condition. The empirical analysis indicated a significant negative relationship between public debt and economic growth in the long run but an insignificant relationship in the short run. Specifically, an increase in public debt by 1% is associated with a 3.74% decrease in economic growth in the long run. This finding supports several previous studies, and it implies that governments need effective public debt management to mitigate the long-term impact of public debt. The results also suggest that public debt should be allocated to productive sectors and long-term investment projects to ensure debt sustainability.

Abstract

The Philippines has copious natural resources and a literate workforce, creating a possibility of further growth and being at par with Members’ Intra-ASEAN Trade Levels and ASEAN’s Average Trade Level. With this, the effect of the Philippine Total Trade, GDP by Sector, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and Intra-ASEAN Trade by Products on the Philippine Intra-ASEAN Trade Level were examined among the ASEAN-4 nations – Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. Such was necessary to state if a connection exists between the former and the latter. Moreover, as numerous countries form trade blocs globally, trade agreements for broader economic integration and grow their trade, as the world is interconnected through trade. This study will reinforce those external initiatives by foreign countries (FDI) and regional organizations (ASEAN) will remain keys to further trade liberalization and economic growth in the Philippines.

Abstract

In the Philippines, the MSME sector is considered to be a significant driving force in boosting economic productivity addressing poverty, income inequality, and high unemployment rates. This study aims to answer, “How impactful are the role of MSMEs on employment generation, income inequality, and poverty in the Philippines?”. Most studies show that MSMEs (regressor) positively impact employment generation, income inequality, and poverty alleviation (regressands) however, some studies show that MSME negatively impacts labor productivity which affects employment generation; MSME and poverty alleviation has a negative association, whereas as MSME industries flourish, poverty incidence also increases; and MSME negatively affect income inequality wherein as MSMEs flourish, the income gap between the rich and the poor is also growing. The researchers collected regional secondary data from the Philippine Statistics Authority and published academic journal online, determined using panel least squares regression analysis to evaluate the relationship between the controlled and observed variables. The study proved that there is a negative correlation between MSMEs and employment generation, income inequality, and poverty alleviation, which means that the dependent variables have an impact on the MSMEs.

Abstract

In this modern era of enhancement, basic to secondary human necessities and desires evolve. Smoking cigarettes has been a problem since then and policies and laws are promulgated to address the smoking problem that every nation faces. Background knowledge and personal social demographics may affect their harmful perception of smoking– whether it is an e-cigarette or a traditional cigarette. This research tackles and determines how socio-demographics such as age, gender, and grade level attained can impact the harmful perception of cigarette and e-cigarette consumption. This study further discusses the socio-demographics and its relationship with harm perception on cigarette and e-cigarette smoking. A survey questionnaire from the National Youth Tobacco Survey 2021 was used as a reference and basis to test whether age, gender, and grade level would affect the harm perception on the usage of cigarettes and e-cigarettes and then Multinomial Logistic Regression. Further testing revealed that gender and grade level positively affects the harmful perception of cigarette and e-cigarette smoking, contrary to age which negatively affects said perception.

Abstract

The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis is the most notable method for measuring environmental degradation and its relationship with economic growth. In this research paper, the researchers examine the validity of the relationship between carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and fluorinated gasses (F-Gas) to Gross Domestic Product, population, renewable energy consumption, trade openness, and inflation of the ASEAN-5 countries’ data from 1990-2018, using panel regression tests which are POLS, FE model, and RE model. Results reveal that the independent variables do not affect CH4 based on the RE model while CO2, N2O, and F-GAS are partially affected based on the FE model. The EKC is confirmed only for F-GAS, suggesting that a turning point is established. Other emissions imply that these economies are still in their early stages of development, hence the non-existence of EKC. Based on the outcomes, recommended actions specifically for the agricultural and industrial sectors include the following: (1) investing in renewable energy, (2) provision of subsidies and incentivization, and (3) adopting and modifying emission-related systematic waste management and recycling to better suit each countries’ economy.

Abstract

It has been proven that business location greatly affects the performance of traditional businesses. The rise of online businesses was mainly due to their convenience in terms of location and customer proximity. The study aims to determine whether location serves as a moderating factor in the newer online businesses in terms of various determinants. With the prevalence of e-commerce, we would like to determine if these variables still play a factor in choosing an online business location as likewise with traditional businesses. This research demonstrates whether or not an online business location is correlated with business firm size, capital, and internet connection. The results indicate that location does in fact serve as a moderator in the relationship between firm size, starting capital, internet connectivity, and firm performance.

Abstract

Over the years, countries from Southeast Asia have MSME sectors that play a vital role in economic development of the region. Governments have their own strategies on how to deal with their economies, through fiscal policies, that serve the best interest of the condition of their states and citizens. As MSMEs in the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam continues to contribute employment of the vast majority of their populations, this study examines the effects of the fiscal spending of the aforementioned countries to their MSMEs and the relationship of the increase in number of MSMEs to aggregate national economic outputs. By using panel regression analysis, this paper aims to prove that fiscal policies, as measured using annual government expenditures data, together with household consumption, and MSME employment as supporting variables, would positively affect MSME growth, leading to a favorable outcome to GDP growth. This led to this paper providing insights that government expenditure and HFCE have positive significant relationship to the number of MSMEs in the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, while MSME employment is negatively significant to it. With the rise of MSMEs in the selected countries, the PLS and RE results concluded that GDP growth of these countries can be influenced by their MSME growth. The outcome of this study could help policymakers and institutions to formulate sound government measures and recommendations to ensure that opportunities provided by the MSME in their economies are maximized.

Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship of income and economic growth toward the savings of Filipino households over the business cycles. Savings has been studied to have various determinants. Thus, the researchers of this study were urged to provide empirical evidence in this topic within the economic context of the Philippines. The study would like to establish the conventional income-savings relationship and prove the causal relationship of economic growth to savings, both of which will be observed through a business cycle to understand the behavior of saving better. The researchers used Panel Data Regression analysis to find the significant predictors among the variables. It was found that the highest income range positively affects savings, and interest rates negatively affect it. Moreover, CAR was proven to have the highest average savings among other regions in the Philippines. However, it is only averaged compared to ARMM regarding Regional GDP. With this, the study provides policymakers with a better outlook on what factors they should focus on to boost savings and consequently improve investment and further economic growth.

Abstract

Previous studies have revealed that marital status and gender roles affect the totality of labor force. Societal norms that have been existing from hundreds of years ago are still prevalent nowadays. Unequal treatments are still present and mostly the disadvantage are females. This research tackles whether gender (male and female) would have an effect or has a relationship with the number of hours worked by people in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. It further discusses the reason behind whether it affects or doesn’t affect the number of hours worked. Data from Philippine Statistics Authority from 1991 to 2020 is used as a basis and reference data to test whether gender affects the number of hours worked in those regions. Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao is used due to the reason that it is Philippine’s three major islands which is composed of several provinces and regions. Ordinary Least Squares is used to test whether there is a significant relationship between said variables and upon testing, in which resulted that there is no significant relationship.
