Abstract

Noun phrases are an important element in sentences because they can fill almost all elements of a sentence except the verb (V). In addition to their role in grammar, noun phrases are also often used in psychological marketing in advertising texts to attract consumers persuasively. This research aims to analyze the structure and function of noun phrases found in captions. The data were obtained from captions of restaurant accounts taken directly from Instagram from April to September 2025. This research used a qualitative research design. The data were identified and classified based on syntactic theory to determine their patterns and functional roles. The results show that the simplest structure of a noun phrase is Noun (N), and the most complex structure is Det + Adj + N + PP. In addition, it was found that the grammatical functions of noun phrases include subject, object, complement, prepositional complement, appositive, and adverbial. This research concludes that the relationship between the varied NP structure and its dominant function as an object creates an efficient yet informative communication pattern. This proves that the linguistic structure in Instagram captions is not just a random string of words, but a strategic tool designed to capture the user’s attention. In conclusion, the effectiveness of a message depends on how the noun structure is arranged to function as something persuasive and rich in meaning. By understanding this pattern, it can be seen that every word in the caption has the goal of turning readers’ interest into real action.

Abstract

Kupang Malay is one of the regional varieties of Malay spoken in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, and serves as an important means of communication among multicultural communities in the region. As a Malay-based creole language, Kupang Malay has developed unique linguistic characteristics through continuous contact with various local languages, including languages spoken by indigenous communities in Timor Island. One linguistic feature that reflects this development is morphology, particularly affixation, which plays an important role in forming words and expressing grammatical meanings. This study aims to describe the forms, functions, and meanings of affixes found in Kupang Malay. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews with native speakers, and documentation of daily utterances produced by the Kupang Malay-speaking community in Oesapa, East Kupang. The collected data were analyzed through identification, classification, and interpretation of affixation patterns based on morphological analysis. The findings reveal that Kupang Malay employs several affixation patterns, particularly prefixes and suffixes, which contribute to the formation of verbs, nouns, and other lexical categories. The study identifies productive affix forms that function to indicate grammatical processes such as verbalization, nominalization, and modification of word meanings. Several affixation patterns show differences from standard Indonesian morphological structures, particularly in their usage, distribution, and semantic functions. These variations demonstrate the influence of language contact and the dynamic development of Kupang Malay as a creole language This study contributes to the documentation of regional language morphology and provides further linguistic evidence for understanding the structure, variation, and development of Kupang Malay within the context of Indonesian multilingual society.

Abstract

The research examines why the IELTS Speaking and Listening scores of a single candidate differed when he took the tests in 2021 and 2025, even though his English proficiency did not change. The author is an English lecturer in Indonesia with bipolar disorder. The research adopts the methodology and stance of autoethnography and is based on six full IELTS exams and one single-skill Listening retake, supplemented by the autobiographical memory of the day the test was taken and the artifacts of the preparation prepared by the author. It reduces to speaking and listening, since the two skills are practiced on the spot and are time-constrained, where immediate focus and impact are most strongly exerted on performance. The results show that speaking and listening were between band 6 and 7.5, and between 6 and 8, and in most instances, just months apart. It is most easily isolated when listening, with no examiner to be taken into account, and with the same skill obtaining 6 at the close of a long testing day and 8 two weeks later when alone. The human element is added through speaking, as the oral interview is co-constructed with an examiner. The author had thought he was rated more severely by non-native examiners, but his self-ratings do not bear this out, which he reads as internalized native-speakerism that turned self-fulfilling on bad-mood days. The research concludes that single-sitting Speaking and Listening bands can indicate the condition and state of a test day as much as ability with implications of test fairness, preparation, and teacher consciousness when candidates have a mood disorder.

Abstract

Diagnostic assessment enables teachers to identify students’ prior knowledge, understanding, learning readiness, and learning difficulties before instruction. This study aims to identify the forms of diagnostic assessment implemented in Indonesian language learning, examine its strengths and weaknesses, and explore its impact on students’ understanding and learning engagement. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observations, structured interviews, and documentation involving the fifth-grade homeroom teacher and ten student informants at SD Negeri 076688 Hiligawoni. Six classroom observations were conducted from January 30 to February 28, 2026. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, open coding, and thematic construction. Data validity was established through source, technique, and time triangulation and member checking. The findings show that diagnostic assessment was primarily implemented as cognitive diagnostic assessment through oral questions, written tests, and assignments. The assessment identified students’ prior understanding, learning readiness, and difficulties and provided a basis for additional explanations or enrichment. Its strengths included increased student participation and enthusiasm and improved identification of learning needs. Its weaknesses included some students’ lack of confidence in answering questions and the additional time required, which sometimes reduced time for subsequent materials. The findings indicate that diagnostic assessment positively supported students’ understanding and learning engagement through follow-up instruction. The study recommends continuing diagnostic assessment while incorporating non-cognitive aspects and improving implementation efficiency.

Abstract

Elementary education is expected to foster students’ academic achievement, creativity, active engagement, and social character. However, preliminary observations at SD Negeri 070999 Tarakhaini indicated that fifth-grade learning remained predominantly teacher-centered, with limited use of visual media and students experiencing difficulties in developing creative poster designs and communicating social character values. This study aimed to examine the implementation of visual creativity media in creating social character posters and improve students’ creativity and learning outcomes through project-oriented learning activities. The study employed Classroom Action Research based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research involved 20 fifth-grade students and was conducted in two cycles, each comprising two meetings. Data were collected through observation, essay tests, field notes, and documentation and analyzed using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The intervention incorporated visual stimuli, including infographics and poster examples, as well as drawing, collage, and mixed-media techniques. The findings demonstrated progressive improvements in researcher activity, student engagement, and learning achievement. Researcher activity increased from 54% and 63% in Cycle I to 71% and 85% in Cycle II, while student activity increased from 58% and 67% to 90% and 95%, respectively. Students’ average achievement increased from 66% to 86%, exceeding the 80% mastery target. The findings indicate that visual creativity media supported students’ creative expression, active participation, and learning achievement in poster-making activities. Thus, visual creativity media may serve as an alternative approach for integrating creative learning with social character development.

Abstract

Speech-writing skill is a crucial competency that elementary school students must master. However, in reality, fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 074049 Teluk Belukar still struggle with structuring speeches, developing ideas, and using language that adheres to proper conventions. Furthermore, the instructional process remains focused on final outcomes, and the implementation of assessments that evaluate the students' learning process is not yet optimal. This study aims to improve speech-writing skills through the application of authentic assessment combined with the Think–Pair–Share (TPS) learning model. This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) project. It was conducted over two cycles, each comprising the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were 20 fifth-grade students. Data collection techniques included observation, performance assessment, portfolios, and self-assessment. The data were analyzed using both descriptive qualitative and quantitative methods. The results indicated that in Cycle I, the students' speech-writing skills were still low, characterized by difficulties in selecting a topic, structuring an outline, and developing the content of the speech. A significant improvement was observed in Cycle II, with the majority of students demonstrating the ability to write speech texts systematically, develop ideas more effectively, and use more precise language. Furthermore, student engagement and active participation in the learning process also increased. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the implementation of authentic assessment using the Think–Pair–Share (TPS) learning model can enhance the speech-writing skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 074049 Teluk Belukar.

Abstract

The use of AI has now developed into various aspects of life. For Muslims, this development requires addressing not only technological capabilities but also how AI is used in a way aligning with Islamic values. This study aims to examine how artificial intelligence (AI) is discussed and presented to a global Muslim audience in an episode of the podcast The Thinking Muslim. This study employs a qualitative approach using a single-case study design. This analysis draws on Gumperz’s interactional sociolinguistics supported by stance theory, identity-in-interaction, and audience design. The data comes from a 60-minute 17-second episode titled “The New AI Empires,” between host Muhammad Jalal and AI expert Waleed Kadous. The episode on YouTube was downloaded and transcribed. The data was then divided into 61 conversational units, coded, and grouped into five main themes. The results of this study show that AI is discussed not only as technology, but also as a geopolitical, ideological, moral, religious, and civilizational issue. Kadous’s authority is constructed through hybrid translation, which builds on his professional background and his position as a Muslim. The identity of the Muslim group is depicted as underrepresented and dependent on the technology of others. However, this group is seen as having responsibilities and morals, as well as the ability to build technological sovereignty. Changes in language variety, personal pronouns, analogies, and re-explanations help direct the audience toward education, investment, evaluation, and institutional cooperation. Therefore, this study encourages AI that aligns with Islamic values.

Abstract

Language style is an important aspect of communication used by speakers to express ideas, feelings, and social relationships. This study aims to identify the types of language styles and communication characteristics used by men and women in the YouTube game show. This study uses a qualitative method. Joos’s (1967) language style theory is used to analyze five types of language styles: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. Tannen’s (1990) gender communication theory is used to analyze communication characteristics, including report talk, rapport talk, directness, and indirectness. The data were taken from the YouTube video of Family Feud entitled “The Kardashians vs The West Family” by transcribing all conversations and then separating and classifying the utterances based on gender. The results show that men are more dominant in using report talk and directness to convey information and control interaction, while women are more dominant in using rapport talk and indirectness to build and strengthen interpersonal relationships. However, women also use report talk and directness in competitive situations, while men use indirectness to maintain their self-image and rapport talk to build closeness. In addition, men use casual, consultative, formal, and intimate styles, in which intimate style is also used in their role as the host to create closeness with participants and audiences. Meanwhile, women use casual, consultative, and intimate styles to express feelings and strengthen social relationships. These findings indicate that although men and women use similar language styles, there are differences in their communication purposes based on gender.

Abstract

This research is intended to discuss affixation process found in a children’s novel “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. The focus of the research is about the types of derivational and inflectional morphemes found in the novel. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method.  Novel entitled The Little Prince was used as the data source. Data were collected by reading and note taking technique. The theory of Katamba and Stonham (2006) was applied to the data analysis Based on the analysis, it was found that many derivational and inflectional morphemes were used to form several words in the novel. The derivational morphemes can be distinguished into derivational morphemes used to form adjective from noun base (-ous and -ful), to form adjective from verb base (-ible, -able, -ful, and -less), to form adverb from adjective base (-ly), to form noun from verb base (-er,-ion, -ment, and -ing ), to form noun from adjective base (-ness), to form verb from adjective base (en- and -able), to form noun from noun base (dis-), to form adjective from adjective base (un- and in-), and to form verb from verb base (re-). The inflectional morphemes found in the novel can be classified into morpheme -es for 3-rd person singular present, -ed for past tense, -ing for progressive, -s for plural marker, -er for comparative degree, and -est for superlative degree. These findings will be useful for those who are interested in studying morphological analysis in English or other languages as a comparison.

Abstract

This study examines the syntactic structures found in the official Investigation Reports (BAP) of domestic violence (KDRT) victims at the Bau-Bau Police Station. The background of this research lies in the need for clarity and accuracy of language in legal documents, considering their role as formal evidence in judicial processes. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzed sentence structures from five authentic BAP documents. The findings reveal that most sentences adhere to the basic Indonesian syntactic patterns such as Subject–Predicate (S–P), Subject–Predicate–Object (S–P–O), and Subject–Predicate–Object–Adverbial (S–P–O–K). These sentences are generally complex and lengthy, marked by detailed temporal and locative adverbials. The dominant syntactic functions include subject, predicate, object, and adverbial. Notably, the reports also exhibit features such as passive constructions, agent deletion, and complex clause structures, especially in recounting chronological events. While written in formal language, some statements implicitly reflect the emotional condition of the victims. The study concludes that BAP narratives are constructed in a standardized yet narratively effective manner to support the clarity and legal validity of victim testimony. This research contributes to forensic linguistics by emphasizing the importance of syntactic competence in legal documentation and recommends linguistic training for law enforcement officers to enhance the effectiveness of written legal communication.
