Abstract

This article analyzes the articulation of Islamic thought in the 2014 and 2019 General Elections in Indonesia, both of which were marked by efforts by progressive and conservative Muslims to dominate public spaces. Contestation was evident in these political discourses, with progressive Muslims advocating for moderatism, political ethics, and tolerance in narratives of inclusivism, pluralism, and tolerance while conservative Muslims disseminating extremism, the formalization of sharia law, and intolerance in narratives of exclusivism and homogenization. The analysis questions the continuity-discontinuity, motives, and actors of both progressive and conservative Muslim movements and investigates the challenges for progressive Muslims in disseminating their narratives in Indonesia. The result argues that massive religious organizations in Indonesia articulate, internalize, and institutionalize progressive thought within their organizations and educational institutions. This article encourages progressive Muslims to reckon with and countermeasure conservativism among religious and political elites whose narratives exploit religious sentiments for practical purposes.

Abstract

This paper explores the aftermath of the Java War on the socio-religious climate in Magelang. The rate of Christianization in that landscape accelerated following the war between the colonial regime and local residents. The discussion reconsiders the strategies of two leading figures of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah in stemming Christianization in the 19th-century Magelang. The Christian missionary agenda in Magelang was accomplished by eliciting the community’s sympathy. The missionaries built public hospitals and churches for local residents and hence held the congress of Catholic political associations and De Gereformeerde zending in Midden-Java in Magelang. The Dutch government also issued various policies to suppress Islamic movements. This paper finds that Dalhar Abdurrahman and Ahmad Dahlan responded to the missionary agenda in Magelang with non-confrontational strategies. Dalhar divided the socio-religious landscape of Magelang into two regions, the South and the North, based on the situation of Christian development. Dalhar also build a pesantren in Watucongkol and initiated the foundation of the Magelang Branch of NU to coordinate Muslim reformists. Dahlan halted Christianization by establishing a modern educational institution called Kweekschool Islam in an effort to compete with Dutch schools in Magelang. Dahlan also frequently engaged in dialogues and debates with the Christian missionaries.

Abstract

The puppet theater becomes a popular form of cultural expression in the Muslim world, even though wayang performances are not considered a central part of Islamic theology. Wayang performances are seen as having a spiritual significance among Indonesian Muslims for centuries.  Such puppet theater incorporates forms, styles, and elements of Islamic spirituality and traditional Javanese cultural practices into its narratives. The article pays attention to the idiosyncratic forms, elements, and meanings of contemporary wayang through the craftsman’s framework. The analysis takes into account the formulation and presentation of the wayang in contemporary Indonesian art, focusing on the creation of “Wayang Kekayon Khalīfah Paraga Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb.” This wayang is associated with the figure of 'Umar b. Khaṭṭab (d. 644). Umar is a historical figure who played a significant role in the early history of Islam and is revered for his wisdom and leadership by most Muslims. The discussion argues that the materiality of puppets in the non-Arab Muslim world not only functions as a traditional form of entertainment stimulating the sense of “fun” but also as complex semiotic experiences between a dhalang (wayang puppeteer) and his audiences using signs of two-dimensional buffalo leather and its silhouettes.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the root of the discourse of religious moderation in various religious traditions in Indonesia. As a multicultural country with diverse ethnicities, races, religions, and cultures, religious tolerance is significant for maintaining religious harmony. Recently, the Indonesian government is greatly promoting and mainstreaming religious moderation programs to prevent any political tension and conflicts among religious groups. The government’s idea of religious moderation is seen as not accommodating all of the religious beliefs held by the Indonesian people. In this regard, this article examines how the language of religious moderation has evolved in each of various Indonesia’s religious traditions. Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestantism, and Confucianism are the official religions recognized by the state. Using discourse analysis, this study concludes that all the established religions in Indonesia essentially share the same notion of religious moderation, yet it is articulated in different terms.

Abstract

The rhetorical project of Muhammad al-Ṣāmil, which called Balāghat Ahl al-Sunnah comes in the field of purifying Islamic knowledge from extraneous impurities and deviations. We discuss the foundations of this project and its cognitive practices as a discourse that can be analyzed according to approaches to discourse analysis, especially Foucault and Fairclough approaches, to arrive at a critical evaluation of the issue and its consequences. In the end, we reached the following results: First, the project is merely a transfer of “subjectivity” from the subjectivity of the theologians (mutakallimīn) to the subjectivity of those who reject the theological thought (‘ilm al-kalām); Secondly, the project is, in fact, a rhetorical practice through which authoritarian practices are carried out to exclude others and deconstruct their authority. Third, the support of the official educational institution for the project suggests ideological support as a policy by the state institution that funds it, and this means directing the knowledge path in a politically and ideologically biased direction. In sum, it is said that the project started with an ideology critique and ended with ideologized critique.

Abstract

Ali Mustafa Yakub and the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (Indonesian Ulama Council) differed in their interpretation of the Indonesian qibla directon. According to the Indonesian Ulama Council, the qibla of Indonesia faces northwest, whereas Yakub believes it faces west. The Hisab Rukyat Board of the Indonesian Ministry of Religion, the Indonesian Ulama Council, Islamic organizations, and Islamic scholars (ulama) can use this research as a reference when determining the qibla. This study employs Abdul Wahhab Khallaf's takhsis theory in ‘Ilm Uṣūl al-Fiqh. In this investigation, both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were utilized. The Al-Qur'an is interpreted using the thematic interpretation procedure. This study concludes that the majority of the hadiths narrated by Tirmizī (the direction between east and west is the qibla) can be interpreted in light of verse 144 of surah al-Baqarah (turn your face toward the Masjid al-Haram). This takhsis theory classifies the direction of the Indonesian qibla into three categories: general (west), semi-specific (northwest), and special ('ainul Kaaba).

Abstract

This article explores the role of interfaith relations in Indonesian society, with a particular focus on their representation in contemporary Islamic novels. While various programs have been implemented to foster interfaith harmony, the role of literature in promoting such relationships has received less attention. This study highlights the incorporation of interfaith themes within contemporary Islamic novels, where romantic storylines are intertwined with Islamic teachings. Millennials and young people, who constitute a significant portion of the readership, find enjoyment in these narratives and ideologies. The inclusion of interfaith narratives in these novels serves as a countermeasure to the popular "chick lit" genre that employs vulgar language and lacks religious nuances. Employing Ervin Goffman's theory of dramaturgy, the research focuses on the works of Habibburahman El Shirazy and Asma Nadia as representative popular Indonesian Muslim novelists. The findings reveal that Islamist novels have received positive responses from millennial readers, and the elegant delivery of interfaith values contributes to peacebuilding within the context of this generation. Overall, this study emphasizes the promotion of peace and interfaith understanding through the medium of popular Islamic novels, catering to the needs and preferences of the millennial demographic.

Abstract

This article explores three primary perspectives regarding the concepts of tradition and religion. Despite the prevailing tendency among modern Muslim communities to separate tradition from religion, this research presents a contrasting view. For instance, Seyyed Hossein Nasr investigates the essential relationship between tradition and religion, formulating a new approach grounded in perennial philosophy. Additionally, Abdurrahman Wahid significantly contributes by defining tradition and religion within the discourse of localism, providing profound insights into how they mutually shape the cultural and social identity of modern Muslim society. On the other hand, Nurcholish Madjid proposes that tradition and religion are parallel within the concept of the Great Tradition, offering a unique understanding of their interrelation. Utilizing a comparative study method, this article analyzes the perspectives of these three scholars on tradition and religion. This research is expected to provide valuable insights and stimulate further discussion on the intricate relationship between tradition and religion in the context of modern Muslim thought.
