Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of two English for Specific Purposes (ESP) textbooks, used at the Health Polytechnic in Solok, Indonesia. The research aims to assess how well these textbooks align with the academic and professional needs of nursing students. A survey was conducted among 80 second-year nursing students enrolled in the English for Nursing course. Data was collected through a 19-item questionnaire covering five key dimensions: aims and approach, design and organization, language content, skills, and topics. The results revealed that students generally responded positively to the textbooks, highlighting their well-organized structure, relevant grammar coverage, and practical clinical scenarios. However, some areas were identified for improvement, particularly the coverage of pronunciation and writing activities. The lack of focus on these aspects could hinder students’ communication skills and documentation abilities, which are essential in medical settings. This study emphasizes the importance of refining textbook content to better support students' language development and professional preparation. Future research is encouraged to explore the long-term impact of these textbooks on students' language proficiency and to compare similar materials used internationally for further improvement.

Abstract

The paper examines how Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) can adapt its features to fulfill the demands of Education 5.0 in terms of the integration of technology, collaboration, and real-life skills in English language teaching. A narrative literature review on relevant research related to CLT was carried out, along with an analysis with regard to the agreement of principles with Education 5.0. While interaction and learner's autonomy remain some of the key concerns of CLT, its modifications in forms of infusion of the digital tool along with culturally responsive strategies have become necessary. These are identified at the heart of most barriers to full integration: teacher training, access to technology, and curriculum development. The framework, on the other hand, proposes ongoing professional development, improvement in access to the digital resources, and a focus on a learner-centered environment. The paper underlines the potential of CLT in shaping the future of teaching English and further calls for more empirical studies assessing its effectiveness as a theory in contemporary educational contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of playing video games on the development of English language skills, with a particular focus on expressive abilities among college students. The research explores how video games, as interactive and immersive environments, enhance learners’ confidence, motivation, and communication skills in English. Using a quantitative approach, data were gathered through questionnaires distributed to respondents with varying gaming habits and language proficiency levels. The findings reveal that video games positively influence language acquisition. A significant portion of respondents reported improvements in articulating thoughts clearly, understanding idiomatic expressions, and engaging in real-life English conversations. Over 80% agreed that video games make learning English more enjoyable and interactive, while 54% acknowledged increased confidence in using English after playing. Moreover, multiplayer games provided opportunities for real-time communication and quick linguistic responsiveness, further developing expressive and social language skills. Video games could be a powerful language learning tool by addressing societal misconceptions and technical challenges. The research concludes that video games are not only a source of entertainment but also a valuable medium for fostering English language proficiency, particularly in expressive communication. This underscores the need for further exploration of gamified learning to unlock its full educational potential.

Abstract

This study analyzes the lyrics of Don’t Smile by Sabrina Carpenter using John Searle’s speech act theory to uncover the emotional and communicative layers within the lyrics. This theory classifies utterances into five types: assertives, directives, expressives, commissives, and declaratives. The findings of the study reveal that expressive speech acts dominate the lyrics, followed by assertive and directive acts. Commissive speech acts appear less frequently, and no declarative acts were identified. The song reflects the speaker’s emotional struggle, emphasizing raw emotional expression and the process of healing through art. This research highlights how speech act theory can provide deeper insights into the use of language in song lyrics, transforming music from mere entertainment into a powerful medium for emotional expression that resonates deeply with its listeners.

Abstract

This study aimed to implement, and evaluate a real-time monitoring information system to enhance the development of English language skills among students. Traditional methods of language learning often lack immediate feedback and individualized tracking, which are critical for skill improvement. To address this gap, a web-based system was developed to monitor student performance in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, providing real-time analytics to both students and teacher. The research employed a design and development approach using a mixed-methods evaluation. Fifty students and five English teachers at SDN Pasir Jengkol II Karawang participated in this reasearch. Quantitative data from system, and pre-tests and post tests were analyzed alongside qualitative feedback from surveys and interviews. Results indicated significant improvements in student performance across all skill areas, with an average increase of over 12% in post-test scores. User feedback revealed high levels of satisfaction with the system’s usability and usefulness, and indicating excellent usability. In conclusion, the real-time monitoring system effectively supported English language learning and instructional practices by providing timely feedback, increasing student motivation, and enabling data-driven decision-making. The findings suggest that such systems have strong potential for broader implementation in language education.
