Kata Kita is a journal dedicated to the publication of students research in the areas of literature, language, and teaching. In the study of language, it covers issues in applied linguistics such as sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, pragmatics, sylistics, corpus linguistics and others. In the area of literature, it covers modern and contemporary literature in English in the forms of printed, screened, aired or performed texts. In the field of teaching, it covers teaching materials and practices, especially those related to English Language Teaching.

<![CDATA[This paper tries to deal with the causes of Bella’s anxieties and the ways Bella overcomes them in The Twilight Saga: New Moon. To analyze the causes, I use two theories of anxiety; they are reality and neurotic anxiety. The two causes of Bella’s anxieties are insecure environment and traumatic experience. Bella uses four defense mechanisms to overcome her anxieties. They are denial, sublimation, acting out, and fixation. Bella denies her reality anxiety by denying her loneliness in the insecure environment. Besides, she uses acting out in order to release her reality anxiety and convert it to pleasure and satisfaction. Then she sublimates her anxiety into something useful, through studying. She is also fixating her anxiety to overcome both her reality and neurotic anxiety.]]>

<![CDATA[The writer researches the language use of husband and wife in their reconciliation processes and its connection to the reconciliation processes. She uses a film, entitled “Not Easily Broken” (2009) as the representative of reconciliation of husband and wife. She researches the Speech Act of Dave and Clarice during their reconciliation processes. The writer uses the Speech Act theory (Austin, 1962; Searle, 1969; Yule, 1996) and the reconciliation process (Huyse, 2003). Inthe findings of the research, the highest illocution is ‘Representative’ and automatically, the highest perlocution is from ‘Representative’. In the first and second stages, most of the perlocution does not match but in the last stage, all perlocutions match to the illocution and the reconciliation is accomplished.The conclusion is a couple should accept the fact and truth to each other to accomplish reconciliation process.]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to discuss Nina Sayers’ rites of passage which are portrayed through the use of many kinds of symbols. Each stage of rites of passage is represented by symbols. Thus, I will use the theory of rites of passage to match the symbols with characteristics of each stage and the concept of symbols to analyze the symbols so that the meanings are appropriate to the contexts and able to show the ways Nina Sayers’ rites of passage are symbolized. The analysis shows that each stage of the rites of passage is symbolized by many forms of symbols. It also shows that symbols of rites of passage can actually hold more than one meaning as they can change meanings in each stage of rites of passage. In the end, it can be concluded that symbols in Black Swan have been effectively used to strongly reveal the rites of passage.]]>

<![CDATA[This research aims to help people understand about errors in transferring message in humor text based on Newmark’s Communicative Translation theory. The data is taken from eighty translation texts made by twenty students of Basic Translation Class period 2010/2011 batch 2009. The writer analyzes the translation data and classifies the errors based on the accuracy in transferring the message. The writer wants to find out the kinds of the error and the frequency. The findings are Errors in transferring the message and Possible Variations in Translation.]]>

<![CDATA[Crash shows the life of a community in a multicultural city of Los Angeles in a variety of separate scenes. At the end of the story will be seen a common thread that connects each of the characters and events that they experience with other characters. The interaction of the players in the movie Crash is highly dominated by racial conflict as a result of racism. In the society nowadays, most people usually see racism only by how the majority discriminate the minority like what is reflected in Crash without knowing that Crash also portrays as vividly how the minority react towards the discrimination by the majority. <![CDATA[This study discussed the types and functions of hedges also some changes of hedges perceived in the using of hedges related to social distance. The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks, were used as the source of data and the data of this study were 16 scenes containing conversation between Ronnie Miller and Steve Miller. The theories used were hedges and its functions by Coates (1996), the types of hedges by Salager-Meyer (1997), and hedges related to social distance by Holmes (1996). There were six types of hedges out of seven types found out by the writer in her data. After analyzing hedges based on the types and functions, the writer also analyzed the changes that can be perceived in using hedges and their functions. The data analysis showed that there were some changes in using hedges related to the functions. The changes of the function may be influenced by social distance between the two characters which is expression of doubt, followed by expression of confidence, searching for the right word and sensitivity of others’ feeling.]]>

<![CDATA[This article tries to reveal about O’Neil’s survival tactics in gaining gender equality in the Military. By using the tactics such as contradictory tactic, overcompensation and demonstrating proficiency at the required tasks, the analysis shows the ways she overcomes the difficulties in the Military training as a woman. In adapting with all the requirements, O’Neil wants to prove that she is as capable as any other male candidate there. Moreover, she also wants to overcome her differences from men so that they can acknowledge her as a part of them. In conclusion, O’Neil can show her survival tactics in gaining equality because she is willing to overcome the difficulties in the Military.]]>

<![CDATA[This thesis is about a study of the interruptions produced by the Moluccan students in a fellowship meeting, consisting of fifteen students as the respondents, who are divided into two: the chairperson and the members. The purposes of the study are to know the tokens and the functions of interruptions used by the chairperson and the members of the meeting by considering social role as the social factor. The writer applies the theory of interruptions by Tannen (1990) and Wardhaugh (1985) as the main theories. Besides, the writer also uses the theory of social role by Johnstone (2008) and the theory of discourse markers by Schiffrin (2003) as the supporting theories. The writer used qualitative approach to conduct this research. The writer discovered that the chairperson produced more tokens (19) than the members (13). Moreover, the writer found that the respondents produced Ambonese tokens, such as “Hiii”, “Weee”, “Seng”, “Eee”, and Suroboyoan tokens, such as “Lho” and “Itulho”. Both the chairperson and the members produced “other” functions the most with 58.75% and 63.81%. In conclusion, social role influenced the interruptions and their functions, and the number of tokens produced by the participants.]]>

<![CDATA[This article tries to reveal the clash of value between April and Frank as the main characters in Richard Yates’ Revolutionary Road. Using the theories of gender role, power and motherhood, the analysis shows that April and Frank have different values even though they live in the same time, the1950s. The differences of values create a clash between them and it affects their relationship as husband and wife. April Wheeler as the strong character in this novel has modern values from her era while her husband expects her to follow the value of the1950s. These differences make them unable to fulfill their partner’s expectation. It can be concluded that because their values conflict each other, they have difficulties in their marriage life.]]>

<![CDATA[This research investigates linguistic impoliteness used in online football comments through the examination of impoliteness strategies proposed by Jonathan Culpeper. It examines how impoliteness strategies are used on online comments and what strategy mostly used by Indonesian participants in Okezone, an Indonesian football website. The research uses descriptive qualitative method supported by quantitative data. First, the writer found that Indonesian participants mostly used positive impoliteness strategy to express their negative attitude on giving comments. Second, there are four out of five impoliteness strategies used by Indonesian participants. Withhold politeness strategy is excluded. ]]>
