Abstract

As a screenplay project about youngsters’ work life, The Survivors follows a story of three young interns named Clara, Sebastian, and Bakti in their journey during the internship program held by a famous e-commerce company. Having not enough experience working in a company, the interns have a hard time to survive in the company. Moreover, they also have non-work related problems. Luckily, these interns later learn about Self-Determination. Being self-determined means that the interns can intrinsically motivate themselves, do things by their own initiative, and also decide things based on their moral or values. Using Deci & Ryan’s Self Determination Theory in work life context, the creative work shows the importance of self-determination in facing the challenges at the work place and how youngsters can actually gain self-determination. The genre is Dramedy as it shows what usually happens to youngsters in a work place then filled it with humors so that it can be entertaining. Keywords: Youngsters, The Survivors, Dramedy, Internship, Work Life, Work Place

Abstract

One genre that has been growing rapidly in manga is yaoi, which sells romance between beautiful young boys and men.  In Aozora no Sunda Iro wa, I want to reveal how Sugiura takes female role in his same-sex romantic relationship and why Sugiura has dominant feminine features which leads to his feminine role.  I used gender role theory and attitudinal pathway gender schema theory.  I find out that Sugiura has female-like body-type.  He is neat, supportive, sensitive, innocent, weak, and submissive.  He is motherly and economically dependent.  In addition, Sugiura became feminine because of Fukada’s involvement in Sugiura’s childhood, his masculine value was rejected while he was encouraged to hold feminine value.  In conclusion, Sugiura is a feminine uke by showing feminine qualities in his persona code, emotion code, and action code which are resulted by Fukada’s involvement in his childhood

Abstract

Crime films usually focus on solving criminal cases or exploring the victim’s story. This creative work that I make, however, follows the story of a criminal who is given a mission to kidnap the successor of a wealthy CEO but mistakenly kidnaps another person instead. He is captured in a dilemma whether to let her go, and his situation gets worse when he is given a new order to kill her. The story revolves around the criminal as the true motive is revealed. With the boundary of good and bad being questioned, this work hopefully reminds people to be less judgmental towards others. The theme in this work is how guilt changes a person’s personality and way of thinking. The psychology of guilt is used for the main theory in this work. The story is presented through the genre psychological suspense, which normally focuses on a crime and its complexity.

Abstract

One of the many reasons why atheists are shunned is the common belief that lack of faith leads to a lack of moral foundation. However, analyses on the moral behaviors of atheists and religious people show that atheists behave similarly to any other group and that they possess their own methods of discovering a moral foundation. This thesis explores the discrimination atheists face within Indonesian society, and how atheists are able to develop and possess their own moral foundation. This thesis uses Turiel’s psychological Social Domain Theory, which is used to explain the moral panic around atheism as well as how morality develops outside of religious teaching. The creative work comes in the form of a magical realist novella about a young woman who slowly reconstructs her view on morality while on a journey to find God for an old corpse, guided by a mysterious archivist.

Abstract

This study analyzes how L-Men persuades its target market to buy its products through the use of a masculinity image in its two advertisements. The two advertisements which the writer studied are entitled “L-Men 2018: 2Go & Gain Mass: Men’s Guide” and “Iklan L-Men Gain Mass Terbaru 2014 Versi Albert Sultan”. In order to find out how masculinity is portrayed in the two advertisements, the researcher sets his analysis on the advertisements’ verbal and non-verbal expressions. In so doing, the researcher conducts his analysis using the theory of Multimodal Discourse Analysis. Within the findings, it is revealed that despite both advertisements are indeed portraying masculinity, how each advertisement shows what is seen as masculine is different from one another.  One advertisement shows that masculinity is based on a man’s aesthetical appearance and the other advertisement shows that masculinity is based on the physical strength of a man. Keywords: Multimodal Discourse Analysis, Masculinity, Advertisement, L-Men

Abstract

This study is a qualitative study aimed to know the principles of CLT implemented and problems faced by a teacher in an English conversation class of eighth grades in S Secondary School. The data was taken through observation and interview. It was analyzed using Larsen-Freeman’ (2000) and Brown’s (2001) theories and supported by Li (1998) as cited in Ozsevik (2010). The findings revealed that out of sixteen principles, five principles were unachievable, namely using discourse language, being a facilitator, setting social context, having communicative interaction, and producing different utterances. Moreover, the main problem in implementing CLT comes from students’ side, such as students’ low English proficiency, passive style of learning, resistance to participate in communicative classroom activities, and lack of motivation for developing communicative competence. It can be concluded that CLT is a suitable approach in promoting communicative competence for learners as long as the teacher and the students are prepared.

Abstract

Gaslighting is a modern term that describes a type of toxic relationship that psychologically abuses the victim. Gaslighting is understood as manipulating the victim into questioning his sanity and the gaslighter has a goal to create a ‘surreal’ environment that will cause the victim to feel like he is in the wrong and is crazy. Since gaslighting is all about manipulation, it can cause mental disorders. In the theoretical framework, we will apply the concept of gaslighting and self-actualization to show the effects of gaslighting and the ways to cope with it. In this work, we explore how gaslighting can cause anxiety, depression and low self-esteem in the victims. We show that the victims of gaslighting can deal with it by fulfilling physiological needs and building herself up again by the help of friends and families. Keywords: gaslighting, toxic relationship, poetry, lyrical poem

Abstract

Animation films have increasingly evolved throughout the years. No longer just a medium to convey stories, films also become an agent to express one’s beliefs. In this thesis, I discuss how Pixar demonstrates their ideal gender role through their films, Wall-E and Monsters University, with the assumption that Pixar deconstructs traditional gender role to show Pixar’s belief that a character can only be successful when he or she is able to adopt traits from both extremes. In order to accomplish this, I use gender role theory. In the analysis, I find out that both films’s existing ideology is that masculine gender role traits are put in higher hierarchy. However, the main characters’s characterization shows gender role traits which debunk the existing ideology such that both masculine and feminine traits become equally important to adopt. As a result, I can see that Pixar supports androgyny through their main characters. I also discover that their ideology can be used for increasing their profit income.

Abstract

Many companies try to find innovative ways of reaching their target market and promoting their products. Product placement (PPL) is one of such innovative ways. PPL has become popular in marketing communication because the promotion in it is quite subtle. It happens because in PPL, the advertisement is integrated in the structure of the narratives of TV series or films where PPL takes place. Thus, PPL can skirt the negative view toward advertising. In this study, we examine how PPL convey advertising messages in Korean drama, Guardian: Great and Lonely God (Goblin). In so doing, by using multimodal theory we analyze the verbal and non-verbal communication practices found some scenes of the Korean drama, and the meaning of PPL semiotic resources in those scenes express. Our findings show that PPL conveys the advertising messages through the acting, the facial expression, and the shot of products. Keywords: Product Placement, Multimodal, Modes, Goblin, Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication
