Abstract

Television occupies widespread popularity and is the best and most effective medium for commercials. With the rapid business growth, television commercial (TVC) has been more and more creatively made. TVC producers usually use semiotic resources to represent a certain character. Through this study, we aim to discover the way the man/husband and woman/wife characters are represented in Royco’s The Best Gift is Homemade TVC and Kecap ABC’s Kecap ABC Bantu Suami Sejati Hargai Istri TVC using visual, gestural, and linguistic modes, and whether the representations challenge or support the traditional roles of man/husband and woman/wife and the reason using traditional gender role theory. Our findings show that, in both TVCs, the man/husband and woman/wife are represented modern roles of man/husband and woman/wife. By doing so, the TVCs persuade the target audience, regardless of their roles as man/husband or woman/wife, to cook with Royco and Kecap ABC.Keywords: Multimodality, Representations, Television Commercial (TVC)

Abstract

This creative project is a screenplay. The screenplay is about a woman who struggles to defy the idea of getting married. In the New Order, President Soeharto led Indonesia using Javanese culture. Until today, there is a belief that women in Indonesia are obliged to get married because of the culture. In Javanese culture, there is a value called 3M (macak, masak, manak). The value created a definition of a true woman. A true woman has to be able to look pretty and cook. In order to fulfil the third value, a woman has to get married and have a family. This value burdens some modern Indonesian women, especially those who have careers. Through this screenplay, I want to encourage women that being married is a matter of choice and not an obligation. Keywords: Indonesian women, Javanese value, Javanese culture, marriage, single woman.

Abstract

This creative work is about a young adult who is excited to explore her identity of someone who has a magical ability. It explores the issue of identities in young adults and its correlation to rebellion in the form of running away, which is common in Indonesia. It aims to bring the readers alongside the main character on her journey of exploring her identity, as well as dealing with her parents’ rejection of the identity that she is most comfortable in. To further understand how she deals with her parents’ pressure to take an identity she does not like, Erik Erikson’s fifth psychosocial stage—Identity vs. Role confusion is used as the first theory of this work. The second theory, James Marcia’s identity status, is used to understand how the main character explores her identity in different statuses. The genre of this creative work is low fantasy, which is a subgenre of fantasy that uses minimal magical elements and is set in the real world.

Abstract

This study mainly deals with the process of signification in order to reveal how meaning is created by the advertisement of Honda HR-V 2014 through the use of expressions. In this study, “Meaning” is an integrated form consisting the three elements which are denotative form, connotative form, and myth form. Using qualitative content analysis (Schreier, 2012), the writer did this study based on Barthes’s process of signification (1987) and Peirce’s indexicality (1931-58). From the analysis, the writer found out that meaning is created by indexicality. The index connects the product and the traits that the product possesses. Then, the use of expressions in the advertisement visualises the index of the product. The index which was visualised by the use of expressions which produces denotative meaning and connotative meaning. Those denotative meaning and connotative meaning are perceived by the audiences and creates myth which naturalises the index itself. It can be concluded from this study that meaning is created by the index and has undergone several steps in order for audiences to perceive the myth and become unaware of the index.

Abstract

Mental health has been overlooked in Indonesia for too long. Labels like ‘nuts’ and ‘insane’ are often associated with the matter, creating a stigma that undermines its significance. Therefore, this creative work intends to bring forth the urgency of mental health awareness, especially on women who are more prone to mental illness than men. The chosen topic is schizophrenia, which can result in fatal impacts, including suicide, if left untreated. The story follows Sandra, an Indonesian female police detective who unknowingly is battling schizophrenia while trying to catch a skilled mysterious criminal. After a series of regressions, she grows more miserable, reaches peak devastation when struck by grief, and tries to end her life. However, she manages to overcome the pain and, with the help of proper treatment, puts the illness under control. Conclusively, this work aims to highlight the importance of early treatment and awareness of mental illnesses.
