Abstract

In Changeling film, Collins as the female character experiences injustice. In this study, I want to reveal how the authorities abuse their power to Collins and the strategies that used by Collins to defeat the authorities’ power. I will use the concept of abuse by the powerful to the powerless by Adam M. Tomison and Joe Tucci and power relations by Michel Foucault. I find out that power is easily abused and not stable because one time, it is the authorities that have the power, but at the other time, it is individual who has more power. The police and the doctors abuse their power to Collins. I find out that Collins uses some strategy to defeat the authorities’ power. She is complying, gathering evidence, and getting allies. At first, she is powerless, but in the end, Collins can defeat the authorities’ power and become powerful.

Abstract

Humanity has their own meanings of life. Those meanings are meant to guide them towards fulfillment. People have different triggers that propel them to find their meanings of life, for example death anxiety. This novel project follows Trista, the bearer of a Curse which has the power to kill her if she uses it. As a result, she fears death and struggles to find her meaning of life, because she feels sorrow caused by her death anxiety. To better explore the issue, I apply Paul Wong’s Meaning Management Theory about meaning of life and death anxiety in the story. I find that death anxiety makes someone like Trista experience a life-changing experience to motivate her to find meaning, and the death anxiety subsides when a person finds meaning, accepts, and no longer fears death. A person who finds meaning will live life to the fullest based on their meanings. Keywords: Meaning of life, death anxiety, death acceptance

Abstract

Psychological issue is the main issue discussed in David Koepp’s Secret Window through its main character, Mort Rainey. Rainey’s psychological struggle will be the main theme in this research. This thesis examines Rainey’s split personality. Furthermore, in this study, we want to analyze the process of how Mort Rainey’s personality splits into two different personalities. To meet the answer of this study, we will use the theory of Dissociative Identity Disorder with a support from Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory about the three psyche agents. In this study, we discover that the process of Mort Rainey’s split personality begins with a traumatic experience, then continues with the repression and compartmentalization to create John Shooter. Finally, the split personality that Mort Rainey experiences is useful as a great defense for Mort Rainey to cope with his trauma.

Abstract

This project is a further step after taking an internship class in the previous semester. The writer had done an internship at Widjaja Music, music educational school located at Jalan Raya Darmo Permai Timur, No. 19P, West Surabaya, for 122 hours and 25 minutes within two months. Then, the writer found three problems in the institution during the internship, (1) the system of the music school is not good, (2) the facility for the administration is not well-supported, (3) and the music school does not have a clear background and history. Despite the writer’s position as an intern who does not have any power to make an important decision, she uses the company profile as the solution to make the improvements of those problems mentioned above. The company profile is specially designed for both customers and owners. For the customers, the writer emphasizes more on the good and strength side of Widjaja Music. For example, the good things about the various courses that Widjaja Music offers in the school. On the other hand, for the owner, the writer emphasizes more on evaluations that could build and strengthen Widjaja Music. For example, the thing that is not good enough is the personnel structure of the music school. By looking at the evaluation, the owner also could fix the weaknesses and keep the strengths of Widjaja Music. At last, the writer learned a lot about the music school throughout the process of making the company profile for Widjaja Music. Thus, the writer has known the basic things regarding the music school, which she found very useful later in her future career life.
