Abstract

Layangan Putus is a web series adapted from a novel by Drh. Eka Nur Prasetya. In this article, I am analyzing this series because there is a hidden gem in these five female characters, which shows their power to fight for their rights and happiness. For that, I am interested in analyzing their power and what consequences they receive. In my analysis, I use the girl power theory based on the descriptions by Zaslow (2017), Inness (2004), and Bettis & Addams (2005) on girl power, which is independent, smart, and assertive. I analyze the way these five female characters exercise their power by being independent, smart, and assertive. As the consequences of exercising their power, they experience positive and negative results. For the positive result, they get what they want in life such as individual freedom, and for the negative one, they have to sacrifice important things such as their feelings, and personal relationships. In conclusion, in exercising their power, they gain self-growth and self-discovery.

Abstract

In this study, I want to analyze a movie that came from a series made by Hasbro, which is titled Transformers. In my study, I found out that the conflict between the human characters and the cyborg characters in the movie revolve around discrimination which is caused by  the conflict itself. I would also like to explore what are the kinds of discrimination within the movie so that I can determine the cause of it and with the research, to learn about not to discriminate. For the analysis of my study, I will use the theory of Posthumanism by Cary Wolfe, which implies that the process of Posthuman transformation includes cyborg enhancements to improve the capabilities of human beings. I also found that from these so-called cyborg enhancements, comes discrimination from the people who think negatively towards the process of the enhancements, and thus discriminate against them.

Abstract

This research examines politeness in two Endgame podcasts, focusing on Gita Wirjawan's request and the use of address terms with a minister and a non-government employee. The writer analyzes politeness expressed by Gita Wirjawan in two podcasts on his channel using First-Order Politeness by Watts (2003) and the Indonesian (Javanese) politeness principle by Suseno (2001) and Kuntjara (2009). A descriptive qualitative approach is employed in this study. The analysis shows that Gita often uses direct language for requests, utilizes the term 'you' to blur their distance. The findings show that Gita wanted to look neutral with someone who has the same rank and tended to appear to have a lower rank when he talks with someone with a higher rank. In conclusion, differences in rank influence how people communicate.

Abstract

This study analyzed the types of errors on sentence structures by students in Writing 2 and Writing 4 classes in the English Department, Petra Christian University, and their similarities and differences. Eight categories of common errors on sentence structures proposed by Ho (2005) were used to analyze thedrafts. The types of common errors in this study were limited to four: Run-on Sentence, Fragmented Sentence, Inappropriate Subordinate Conjunction, and Misordering. The findings showed that both classes made all types of the errors and the most common error made was run-on sentences in the form of comma splice. Fragmented sentences with missing verb and subject were only found on writing 2 drafts while subordinating clauses in fragmented sentences were found on writing 4 drafts. Moreover, errors in relation to subordinating conjunction were more prominent in Writing 4. In conclusion, difficulties in utilizing conjunctions, and the different complexity of the drafts might affect the errors on sentence structures.

Abstract

Online dating applications are one of the results of the advancement of technology and communication in the digital culture. The use of online dating applications, however, is bringing negative effects such as Social Anxiety Disorder or SAD to the users. SAD is known as a mental health problem that is marked by a persistent fear of being humiliated by others. One of the psychological effects of SAD is developing avoidance behavior which is marked by avoiding any social situations. This screenplay aims to explore how online dating applications may cause SAD, and how SAD will affect a person’s mental health condition to the extent that it will influence their relationship with others. This work is using Social Anxiety Disorder theory to analyze the link of the cause and effect of SAD with the dating applications. In results, this screenplay presents a link between SAD and online dating applications as there is trauma of rejection for the users which triggers the appearance of SAD. Also, the development of avoidance behavior is shown when a person with SAD avoids the feared situations completely.

Abstract

This paper revolves around disenfranchised grief in children. Disenfranchised grief refers to a loss that is not acknowledged, not socially accepted, and not discussed in public which makes people think that they have no right to grieve that loss. With children’s picture books as the chosen creative form and adventure as the chosen genre, this paper presents what causes children to grieve and how they process this grief. The stories depict Putra, Gwen, Daniel, Deborah, and Gabriel experiencing disenfranchised grief because their attachment to people or things they care about is broken, regardless of how trivial it is. Onward, they process grief by going through John Bowlby and Colin Murray Parkes’s four phases of grieving namely numbness, yearning and searching, disorganization, and re-organization to seize acceptance.

Abstract

This thesis is a qualitative study on teacher's roles implemented by an American lecturer (AL) and an Indonesian lecturer (IL) in the English Department, Petra Christian University when they taught Reading classes. The objectives of this study are to find out the teacher's roles of both lecturers and their differences and similarities. This study used Harmer's theory on teacher's roles (2015). The data were collected twice for each lecturer. The findings show that the lecturers applied the teacher's roles: controller, monitor, prompter, editor, resource, and organizer. There were roles of evidence gatherer, tutor, and facilitator that were not implemented by both lecturers. This study also found multiple roles in one utterance. For the difference, only AL played the role of prompter when teaching. In conclusion, the topic of reading passages might affect the teacher’s roles implemented by AL and IL.

Abstract

This creative thesis focuses on unconditional forgiveness, exploring the question of how a son can really hate his father. The first theory, Parental Alienation Syndrome, answers how a child can hate one parent because of the insult from the other parent. The child affected by Parental Alienation Syndrome has eight distinct symptoms. Furthermore, this creative thesis wants to explore how the son can forgive his father without the father’s repentance. Employing the Process Model of Forgiveness, the thesis shows the step-by-step journey of forgiveness without any repentance. Both theories will be applied in the creative work, a screenplay. The screenplay is about a victim of Parental Alienation Syndrome haunted by his hatred of his father ever since his parents' separation. The protagonist experiences the three symptoms of Parental Alienation Syndrome. Moreover, he will go through each stage of the Process Model of Forgiveness until achieving reconciliation with his father.

Abstract

A creative and innovative advertisement is required by a company to attract customers. So, advertisers must utilize an attractive technique to convince the viewers to buy their products and they need to deliver the messages to the customers. To deliver the messages, advertisers employ semiotic modes such as visual mode, linguistic mode, and gestural mode. We analyze the denotative and connotative meanings as expressed through the semiotic resources used and the messages delivered in the iPhone 13 Relax, it’s iPhone video advertisement. We use the theory of the process of signification by Chandler (2017) and semiotic mode as supporting theory. The denotative and connotative meanings of the advertisement is that the iPhone 13 has three features namely water-resistance, long battery life, and durability. The messages that these advertisements create is a brand myth, that is, people do not have to worry when they use iPhone 13 in an unfavorable situation.

Abstract

When a girl grows up with an authoritarian parent, the trauma causes her to develop narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) in her young adult years, disrupting her ability to form healthy relationships with her mother, friends, and especially herself. To escape any emotional discomfort, she turns to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) as a coping mechanism. This narrative poetry explores the progression of Renee's life from childhood to her struggle with NPD in young adulthood. It highlights how dangerous NPD is when Renee resorts to NSSI to deal with the negative reactions from others. This creative work underscores the seriousness of NPD since it may lead to a harmful coping mechanism called NSSI.
