Abstract

Survivor’s guilt is a psychological phenomenon that may occur when an individual survives a traumatic event while others are left injured or lose their lives. Although the concept has been around since the 20th century, it remains not widely acknowledged despite its serious consequences. Recognizing this underrepresentation, this thesis examines the long-term effects of survivor’s guilt as researched by Bistas and Grewal, and O'Connor, Berry, and Weiss. These effects are categorized into two main types: mental effects, which include obsessive thinking, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression; and social effects, such as interpersonal sensitivity, hostility, and social isolation. These issues are explored through a creative work in the form of a short story collection, featuring four characters from diverse backgrounds and ages. While the survivors’ experiences are also shaped by environmental responses, the effects significantly impact their mental state and their ability to form relationships in social settings.

Abstract

In this article, we analyze the abusive mother-daughter relationship in The Act (2019). The Act (2019) is a true crime drama series based on the real-life story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. The series tells the journey of Dee Dee’s physical and mental abuse, as well as her controlling behaviour toward Gypsy. In this analysis we focus on how Dee Dee treats Gypsy and why Gypsy responds to Dee Dee’s treatment in certain ways. We will use Nussbaum’s objectification theory to analyze Dee Dee’s treatment, and McClelland’s three social motive theory to explain Gypsy’s responses. The findings reveal that Dee Dee has the desire for power, recognition and wealth, while Gypsy has the need for independence and affiliation pushes her towards rebellious actions. This study concludes that a mother figure does have an impact on a child’s growth and development.

Abstract

This study analyzes the language styles used by Susi Pudjiastuti in her speech Menjaga Kekayaan Laut Indonesia and the social factors influencing the language styles. The writers used Keraf’s theory of language style (2009) to examine the word choice and sentence structure, and Holmes’ theory of social factors (2013). Employing a qualitative method, the study focused on the utterances containing language styles. The findings show that the most frequently used language style based on word choice was the conversational style. In terms of sentence structure, repetition and climax were the mostly used by Susi Pudjiastuti. These results suggest that social factors namely participant, topic, setting, and function played a role in shaping her language styles. Future research is encouraged to apply the full framework of Keraf (2009) to explore other forms of public communication.
