Abstract

This study analyzed the code-mixing types and factors used by Edwin in the web series Rumah Biru The Series Season 2. The writer employed a qualitative approach using Muysken’s (2000) and Bhatia and Ritchie’s (2013) theories to analyze Edwin’s sentences that contain code-mixing. The findings revealed that Edwin utilized two types of code-mixing, namely insertion and congruent lexicalization. The alternation type was absent. Those types were motivated by factors, namely participant roles and relationships, situational, reiteration, message qualification, topic-comment/relative clauses, interjections and language attitudes, dominance, and security. Furthermore, some message-intrinsic factors, specifically quotations, hedging, idioms and deep-rooted cultural wisdom were absent. These findings underscore how Edwin’s code-mixing meets the demands of his workplace, enhancing clarity and efficiency in professional communication.

Asking questions in class can facilitate a smooth flow of discussion and encourage students’ active participation. Teachers help students to have a better understanding by giving questions related to the students’ cognitive domains. Therefore, this study aims to find the cognitive domains employed by an English teacher to primary students in the Children 3B English class atPetra Language Center. The theoretical framework is Anderson and Krathwohl's (2001) cognitive domains. Employing a qualitative approach, the writers transcribed and analyzed the teacher's WH questions in both English and Indonesian languages during three meetings before the final exams. The analysis showed that the teacher utilized two of six cognitive domains: remember and understand. The teacher primarily employed remember cognitive domain. In conclusion, significant factors influencing the outcomes include the learning objectives and the students' proficiency levels. Future research should expand to the Teenager class at Petra Language Center to examine the teacher's response to students' answers to the teacher’s questions.

Abstract

Self-esteem has become an important factor for children’s confidence in shaping their self-identity. As children are growing up, they might face questions regarding their self-identity. Self-identity can be divided into ‘natural self’ and ‘environmental self’ which is acquired through external forces. However, there are cases when their identity does not conform with society’s expectation. In these cases, children might find the need to fit in with their surroundings. Therefore, this creative work explores how self-esteem helps embrace one’s identity to develop one’s life goals. Based on Morwenna Griffiths’ theory that was influenced by American Philosopher William James and an American psychologist Carl Rogers, I will explore how one gains self-esteem in order to grasp self-confidence. Unconditional regard and achievement are significant reasons for solutions to the development of self-esteem. My creative work will tell the stories of five characters. The characters will go on a journey to finally be confident in their self-identity. They will regain their self-esteem by realizing their self-worth and value. Children might learn the importance of embracing their identity through my creative work.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the language style based on diction employed by CNN Indonesia in their advertorial articles. The writer analyzed two advertorial articles from the national and lifestyle sections using three indicators from Keraf's language style theory (2006): vocabulary, sentence length, and sentence structure. Additionally, the study was supported by theories of syntax, inversion, and sentences. Conducted using the qualitative method, the study revealed that CNN Indonesia employed all three language styles in their national and lifestyle advertorial articles. The national advertorial article mostly used the formal language style, while the lifestyle advertorial article mostly used the informal and conversational language style. Moreover, the findings showed similarities and differences in the language styles used by both advertorial articles. Some indicators of language style were prominent in one section but not in another. The language style used was influenced by the topic and targeted audience.

Abstract

This thesis explores how oppression and violent resistance are portrayed in the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners through the character of David Martinez. Using Iris Marion Young's "Five Faces of Oppression" and Frantz Fanon's theory of violent resistance is used for the analysis of how the oppressive conditions imposed by Arasaka Corporation lead David to walk the path of violent resistance as a means to reclaim his humanity and agency. I examine how David's story illuminates the dynamics of violent oppression and resistance. Analysis of David's character serves as a lens through which to examine the dynamics of oppression and resistance, explaining how his violent resistance not only breaks him from oppression but also inspires others to challenge oppression. The analysis finds four types of oppression that happen to David which are marginalization, victim of violence, cultural imperialism, and powerlessness. These oppressive conditions lead to two effects of David’s resistance which is David’s death and the rebirth of humanization.
