Abstract

This thesis discusses the anxieties and defense mechanisms in Tantri, the protagonist of Indonesian indie film Sekala Niskala (2018). This pivotal film of Kamila Andini tells the story of Tantri, a Balinese girl, dealing with her twin brother, Tantra’s terminal illness. In this study, we are investigating Tantri’s anxieties and her ego’s defense mechanisms according to Sigmund Freud’s anxiety theory and his and Anna Freud’s defense mechanism theory. We found that Tantri displayed reality, neurotic, and moral anxiety. Her reality anxiety of Tantra’s deteriorating health extended to her neurotic anxiety and moral anxiety. As a response, Tantri’s ego applied the defense mechanisms of repression and sublimation. Tantri’s repression was manifested in a pretense of reality and dreams that revealed the fears and desires; her sublimation was expressed through a dance. The results of this study show that anxiety and defense mechanisms are universal in different stages of life and all social backgrounds.

The writers discovered that Jerry used the following language features: adjectives, hedges, tag questions, intensifiers, grammar, politeness, commands and directives, minimal responses, and compliments. Based on the findings of Jerry’s language features, it can be concluded that men can use women’s language features too. Abstract

This study investigates how Apple Inc. used metaphorical language in two of its product presentation videos. "September 2018 - Apple" and "Apple Event - September 7" are the videos that have been studied. They include both live and pre-recorded presentations. The present study employs Harris's (2018) theoretical framework to identify the many forms of figurative language used in the two videos. These forms include simile, analogy, metaphor, catachresis, metonymy, synecdoche, personification, allusion, eponym, apostrophe, and transferred epithet. Video transcripts were examined using a qualitative methodology to find instances of metaphorical language. These results highlight various figurative language kinds and show variations in figurative language use between live and pre-recorded presentations. The findings reveal the insights of the figurative language usage in September Event 2018 - Apple and Apple Event - September 7. This study also found that the types of figurative language used in September Event 2018 - Apple and Apple Event - September 7 depends on the where and what format the presentation is set. It is also found that not all figurative language types are used in these two videos. There are some similarities where some figurative language is not being used in both videos, namely catachresis, allusion, eponym, apostrophe, and transferred epithet. Also, there are some differences where some types cannot be found in one of the videos, namely simile, analogy, metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, and personification. It is suggested that this study needs an improvement for other electronic brands that also use product presentation for the launch of the new product.

Abstract

This study examines the functions of swear-words by motivational speaker Gary Vaynerchuk, using Holmes’ (2013) social factors and Ljung’s (2011) swear words functions theory. The qualitative method was applied to textual data from 26 units of Gary Vaynerchuk's speeches, identifying 76 swear-words in the video. These words, often found in intimate conversations in American society, follow specific patterns and are used as slot-fillers within sentence structures to emphasize Gary Vaynerchuk's ideas. Gary Vaynerchuk primarily focused on impersonal topics and informative functions, delivering facts and information to his audience while maintaining an objective relationship. The use of idiosyncrasy in his speech may be due to his fresh and inspiring ideas about business opportunities in technology, and the fact that many swear-words are aimed at himself.

Abstract

This thesis and screenplay aim to illustrate how change and chance can significantly impact people's careers, particularly for those actively pursuing their careers. The main character, Catherine, a public figure striving for greater fame, takes extreme measures to gain popularity. Initially, Catherine admires her idol, but she eventually begins copying her idol's content. Her underestimation for pivotal moments of change and chance, as highlighted by the Chaos Theory in Careers, leads her to seize fake opportunities while missing genuine positive ones. The story focuses on Catherine and her surroundings as she faces the consequences of underestimating change and chance in her career and her journey to recover from these mistakes. Through Catherine’s story, the screenplay demonstrates the importance of effectively managing change and chance for career advancement and long-term success.

Abstract

In this study, we examine Taylor Jenkins Reid's historical fiction, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (2017), focusing on how the protagonist, Evelyn Hugo, challenges the 1950s' values of True Womanhood. During this era, women were expected to be conventional housewives, but Evelyn, a young woman herself, rejects these traditional values, diverging from the ideal woman's life. This rebellion makes her character intriguing to study. My analysis explores how Evelyn defies the three virtues of True Womanhood and how this defiance grants her the agency to shape her own life. We will use Welter's 1966 critique, The Cult of True Womanhood, and Giddens' 1986 Concept of Agency to guide my analysis. The findings reveal that Evelyn defies societal norms by taking control of her body, rejecting societal expectations, and asserting her personal autonomy. Her desire for financial independence and self-reliance drives her defiance, allowing her to live without shame or guilt. Evelyn Hugo emerges as a feminist figure, using her defiance to gain agency in a male-dominated world and living ahead of her time.

Abstract

This study analyzes the correlation of social interactions and their role in forming one’s perceived meanings of the essentials in life in The Little Prince. Using Herbert Blumer’s (1969) Symbolic Interactionism Theory, I analyze the processes during their social interactions, the meanings generated, the interpretation of meanings, and how meanings become the basis of one’s actions. My analysis reveals their social interactions before the encounter generate perceived meanings on essential matters, which drive their lives. The Aviator, perceiving the essentials from interactions with an industrialized society, lives a mundane and lonely life—whilst the Little Prince, perceiving the essentials come from the heart, lives a fulfilled life. However, their encounter alters the Aviator’s perceived meaning, creating a shared perceived meaning on essential matters. Ultimately, the shared perceived meaning drives their actions—the Aviator shares it with the readers and the Little Prince develops the way he expresses it with his friends.

Abstract

This creative work explores Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and its impact on relationships, challenging misconceptions and highlighting its complexity. OCD, characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors, significantly affects individuals' well-being and interpersonal dynamics. Despite its prevalence, OCD often faces trivialization, portrayed as quirks rather than a debilitating mental illness. Through Ethan and Ophelia's narrative, this screenplay aims to raise awareness about OCD's effects on relationships. Ethan's struggle underscores challenges faced by individuals and their loved ones, emphasizing the importance of understanding mental health issues and seeking evidence-based treatments like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT focuses on modifying maladaptive thinking and behavior patterns through techniques such as recognizing cognitive distortions and developing coping skills. By blending romance and suspense, this work seeks to emotionally engage the audience and foster a compassionate approach to mental health.

Abstract

The evolution of animation has been closely tied to pop culture, particularly Japanese anime which significantly influences global animation. With over 430 anime production studios in Japan, Studio Ghibli has emerged as one of the most popular anime studios. Its popularity is partly due to its exploration of themes related to humanity and environmental issues, including war. Reflecting on the fact of how the film has served as a medium to criticize the war, Studio Ghibli confidently implied it in some of its films, one of which is Grave of the Fireflies (1988). This thesis goes beyond recent studies that focus solely on fireflies as symbols of wartime conditions. The broader symbolism used in Grave of the Fireflies will be analyzed to see the impact of war in physical and mental aspects before and after the war. By applying symbolism in war film theory to analyze physical and mental aspects, it shows the characters’ struggles, fears, aspirations, and sacrifices through symbols that appear throughout the film. Moreover, the findings indicate that all of the symbols used in this film have evolved into two opposing conditions: hopefulness and hopelessness.
