Abstract

This study explores the adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women into a 2022 Korean television series, focusing on feminist themes across cultural contexts. By examining the portrayal of women's choices and roles, the research reveals how feminist ideas are reimagined for contemporary audiences. Both the novel and the series portray second-wave feminism through characters like Jo March, who challenges traditional gender roles, and third-wave feminism through characters like Meg March, who emphasizes autonomy and personal agency. The Korean series, featuring characters like Oh In-joo and Oh In-hye, illustrates the interplay between traditional values and modern feminist discourse. This study highlights the cultural reinterpretation of feminist values in adaptations.

Abstract

This creative thesis is about self-efficacy and learned helplessness in young adults. Self-efficacy is the belief in one’s ability to achieve one’s goal. The lack of self efficacy is known as learned helplessness, a term to describe the belief that one does not have control over the future. Through a novella, this thesis explores why young adults experience lack of self-efficacy and how they develop self-efficacy. This novella implements the theory of self-efficacy by Bandura (1997) and the theory of learned helplessness by Peterson, Maier, and Seligman (1993). The novella tells a story of a young adult girl, Etta, who is living in an oppressive orphanage. Due to her traumatic experience, she suffers from learned helplessness, making her unable to get out of the oppressive environment. However, after reading her senior’s diary, getting support from her close ones, and practicing the skills, she develops the belief that she can escape the orphanage. Her new conviction helps her in overcoming setbacks until she is able to achieve her goal.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of self-determination in navigating the quarter-life crisis faced by young adults. The protagonist, Maya, conflicts with extrinsic pressures from society and her mother's expectations regarding her career choice. Through a mystical encounter with traditional Indonesian shadow puppets, Maya is empowered to exercise self-determination by pursuing her intrinsic passions despite external opposition. The narrative centers on Maya's transformative journey of self-discovery, where she reconciles her autonomous aspirations with controlling extrinsic forces. Ultimately, by harnessing self-determination, Maya overcomes challenges to showcase her authentic self. The screenplay illuminates self-determination's vital role in conquering quarter-life obstacles, cultivating intrinsic motivation, authenticity, and resilience in shaping one's life path while honoring cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify various types of figurative language used in the video advertisements for two games, Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. Following Harris's (2018) theory on rhetorical devices, particularly figurative language, the researchers analyzed the utterances in these videos. According to Harris (2018), there are 11 types of figurative language namely: simile, analogy, metaphor, catachresis, metonymy, synecdoche, personification, allusion, eponym, apostrophe, and transferred epithet. Using qualitative research methods, the researchers collected and analyzed the data. The results indicated that the types of figurative language found in Genshin Impact were simile, analogy, metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, personification, and allusion whereas simile, analogy, metaphor, metonymy, personification, and allusion were found in Honkai: Star Rail. Synecdoche, personification, and the combination of metaphor and synecdoche were absent in Honkai: Star Rail. The possible reasons for the differences might probably because of the differences in the game’s themes and the amount of information.

Abstract

This qualitative research study was conducted to analyze the politeness strategies used by Emily Cooper to her boss and work colleagues throughout season 3 of the Netflix series Emily in Paris, specifically within the business context. The main theory used is Watts’ second order politeness strategy (2003) that is elaborated with the politeness strategy theory by Brown and Levinson (1987). The findings indicate that Emily Cooper used more politeness sub strategies to her boss who has a higher social status than hers rather than to her work colleagues who have the same social status as hers. Additionally, the findings revealed that one out of the four politeness strategies Emily Cooper does not use to her boss, whereas she used it to her work colleagues, is the off record politeness strategy. In conclusion, in this study the politeness strategies used by Emily Cooper to both her boss and work colleagues in the series Emily in Paris season 3 depended on the social status of the person she talked to during communicating about work.

Abstract

As the emotional regulation process has already happened since childhood, it is a crucial phase to learn to manage emotions with different strategies. This paper explores emotional regulation strategies performed by children in five children’s picture book stories. The theoretical framework is derived from Emotional Regulation Theory by James Gross. Using antecedent-focused strategies such as situation modification shows better effects than a response modulation strategy such as expressive suppression has negative consequences. As a result of performing expressive suppression strategy, each child character in the stories experiences unpleasant effects such as stress, pessimism, and discomfort with the people around them. The characters then switch to a situation modification strategy by modifying aspects of their initial situation that trigger their negative emotions. All these lead to better consequences of emotional regulation such as experiencing a happier mood and lower levels of negative mood.

Abstract

This thesis presents "Harmonizing Existence," a creative drama screenplay exploring socioeconomic inequality, determination, and personal growth through Bourdieu's habitus theory. It follows Joko Damar's journey from poverty to success, highlighting his trials and transformation. Using a slice-of-life approach, the screenplay conveys that success is achievable through adaptation, hard work, and transcending societal limitations. It challenges biases, inspires self-belief, and prompts reflection on individual potential. The narrative examines the interplay between social structures and personal agency, showcasing Joko's navigation of his initial habitus. By depicting his evolving mindset and skills, the story celebrates resilience while critiquing systemic barriers to social mobility, encouraging viewers to consider their growth potential and broader societal implications.
