Abstract

Beauty penalty is a phenomenon which occurs in society which imposes disadvantages on attractive people. However, as this phenomenon has largely been acknowledged in the confinement of one individual’s testimony to another without adequate further study, the majority of people still ignore it. Despite its prevalence and significance, the beauty penalty phenomenon lacks deeper discussion, especially in Indonesia. In response to this reality, this paper explores the triggers to beauty penalty and multiple forms which the beauty penalty affects one’s life using the concept of perceived entitlement by Margaret Lee et al., the concept of unmet expectations by Catherine Eckel and Rick Wilson, and the concept of beauty penalty forms by Stephen Marson and Joanne Hessmiller as the theoretical framework. We explore this topic by designing a short story collection to show how people’s perceived entitlement and unmet expectations of the attractive protagonists as the triggers to beauty penalty occurrence. In addition, the work shows that the beauty penalty phenomenon can manifest in forms such as social penalties, mental problems, emotional disturbances, and physical challenges. Thus, the protagonists must face their own forms of beauty penalty to achieve their goals.

Abstract

Eldest Daughter Syndrome, more commonly recognized as Child Parentification of the firstborn daughter, describes the phenomenon of parents burdening family responsibilities to their firstborn daughter. Child parentification is common in Asian families including Indonesian families, where parents tend to have an authoritarian parenting style that emphasizes strictness, harshness, and the expectation of obedience from their children (Ang & Goh, 2006). Using Gregor Jurkovic’s theory of “Lost Childhood,” this creative work will highlight the difficulties of being a parentified child, its impacts on their psyche, and potential solutions. It will also explore how individuals can deal with their trauma by seeking support and empowerment from their socioemotional environment. The screenplay portrays the parentified character struggles with anger and resentment towards her parents, stress, and identity disruption. The main impact of these struggles is deep trauma, which is addressed through empowerment and support in her socioemotional growth from her friends.

Abstract

This study drew upon the theoretical frameworks as proposed by Hoffmann (2014) to examine the types of code-switching employed by the shopkeeper with her eight respective customers in their business transactions. This study was carried out using a qualitative approach focusing on the shopkeeper’s and her eight respective customer’s sentences containing code-switching. The findings revealed that the shopkeeper engaged in all the three types of code-switching, whereas among the eight customers there were six customers who used two types and the other two customers who used all three types of code-switching. The code-switching between the shopkeeper and her respective eight customers used codes in Indonesian and Javanese. The study concluded that the application of code-switching by the shopkeeper and her eight respective customers might be influenced by her relationship with her eight respective customers.

Abstract

In this thesis, I chose the movie titled The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian as my object of analysis. I choose this movie because it portrays the world of Narnia without Aslan. The topics addressed in this thesis are how Peter and Lucy perceive Aslan’s and how their perceptions affect their way of thinking. I use the perceptual cycle theory by Neisser (1976) which shows the process of perception and its impact on the decision-making process of Peter and Lucy. The findings of the analysis are that Peter and Lucy have different perceptions of Aslan’s absence because of the information modification in the schemata. Moreover, the analysis shows the impact of Peter’s and Lucy’s perceptions to their way of thinking in making choices. In conclusion, this analysis proves the importance of evaluating perception because of the danger it poses to one’s way of thinking in making a choice.

Abstract

This study explores the use of speech styles by the two of the guests in two podcast episode series released by Raymond Chin. The videos analyzed are titled “Omzet 3.5m per Bulan di Umur 19 Tahun?! Ft. Faiz- 20 Under 20 Episode 11” and “Bisnis Ratusan Juta Dulunya Di Cap “Gabakal Sukses” ft. Eva Alicia- 20 Under 20 Episode 4”. The two episodes of the podcast have two different guests, the female guest is Eva and the male guest is Faiz. Based on Baxter (2010) theory of speech styles, Baxter (2010) divides speech styles into two categories, the first of which is connected with female speech styles, namely: personal, compliant, polite, cooperative, and process-oriented. Second, male speech styles are connected with the following speech characteristics: matter-of-fact, assertive, aggressive, use of humor, ego-enhancing, and goal-directed. A descriptive qualitative approach was used by examining video transcripts to identify examples of speech styles. The findings reveal similarities in the use of speech styles between female guests and male guests, highlighting similarities in male and female speech styles features. This research concludes that the use of speech styles that are based on gender by Baxter is used by both of the guests, despite their gender. This research contributes to the understanding of speech styles in corporate communications and offers insights for future studies of speech styles in various business-related contexts.

Abstract

This study discusses the translation strategies employed by the translator in translating the web-series of Komedi Kacau (Comedy Chaos). The translation strategies used in the web-series were qualitatively analyzed using the theory of Mona Baker (2018). The translation strategies employed by Baker (2018) were Equivalence at Word Level which consist of Morpheme and Lexical Meaning. Also, the other translation strategies proposed by Baker (2018) were Equivalence Above Word Level which consist of Collocation and Idioms. The result of the translation is affected by the strategies and the visual context. Although there are some errors in the translation, the translator can still maintain the meaning of the original text and maintain the context spoken by each character in the Komedi Kacau (Comedy Chaos) web-series.

Abstract

The African American films influence social perceptions, cultural values, and representation in media and how they reflect contemporary issues such as politics, gender, and race. Steven Spielberg decided to take on the challenge of directing The Color Purple (1985) because he was inspired by the highly influential novel by Alice Walker. This thesis intends to reveal the violence and resistance experienced by Celie as an American African woman in The Color Purple. Using Johan Galtung's theories of violence I can identify types of violence that Celie experiences which are physical, psychological, and cultural. I also apply Patricia Hills’ theory on empowerment to analyze the way Cellie frees herself from the violence by creating a positive image of herself, and by getting support from the other black women. In conclusion, The Color Purple provides an in-depth analysis of how a woman overcomes a patriarchal form of violence and achieves personal autonomy.
