Abstract

This qualitative study aims to find the correlation between politeness strategies and status scale when Thomas Shelby communicates to Billy Kimber, a high-status person, and to Chester Campbell, an equal-status person, in a negotiation situation by using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness strategy theory and Holmes’ (2013) social dimensions theory. The source of data is the Peaky Blinders series, season 1 episode 2, and the data are Thomas Shelby’s utterances that contain politeness strategies to Billy Kimber and to Chester Campbell. The findings show that Thomas Shelby often uses negative politeness to Billy Kimber and does not use it at all to Chester Campbell. In addition, Thomas Shelby often uses one of the bald on record types to Chester Campbell compared to Billy Kimber. This study concludes that Thomas Shelby does not carelessly use politeness strategies when negotiating. Instead, Thomas Shelby considers his interlocutor's social status to choose the proper politeness strategies when negotiating. As for the future studies, the writer suggests other researchers to examine scenes other than negotiations or to identify other subjects in this series.

Abstract

This study analyzes both the types of phrase and the types of meaning found in Laneige’s skincare product detail slogans using Biber et al.’s (1999) types of phrase and Leech’s (1981) types of meaning. Using a qualitative approach, the study reveals that 23 slogans convey five types of phrase and five types of meaning. Noun phrases and prepositional phrases are the most common types of phrase, while affective meaning and conceptual meaning are the most common types of meaning. Verb phrases and adverb phrases, as well as social meaning and thematic meaning were not present. The use of noun phrase and affective meaning effectively highlights the product benefits and the positive attributes of the skincare products.

Abstract

This qualitative study examines the politeness strategies used by Logan Paul and Mike Ajlak in The Donald Trump Interview – IMPAULSIVE EP. 418. Using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory as cited in Watts (2003), it focuses on spoken utterances directed specifically at Donald Trump. The data consists of utterances by Paul as the main host and Ajlak as the co-host. The findings show that both use more positive politeness strategies. Paul applies all four main politeness strategies, including bald on record, while Ajlak uses only three: positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. Although both use these three strategies, they differ in the specific sub-strategies applied within each category. They also share some unused strategies. Their roles influence how they use these strategies: Paul leads the conversation, while Ajlak supports it. Despite the differences, both remain polite, especially considering their guest is a former president. The study concludes that they apply different strategies based on their roles. Further research on politeness in political interviews is recommended.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of communication strategies and the reasons why the teacher uses communication strategies in the 3A teenager class of a language center in Surabaya. This study used a qualitative approach with a direct observation and an interview as data collection techniques. This study uses the theory of communication strategies by Mariani (2010) which divides communication strategies into five types: meaning-expression, meaning-negotiation, conversation-management, para- and extra-linguistic, and interaction-monitoring. The last one is not used by the teacher. The result of the interview with the teacher show that the communication strategies used in the class observation is in line with the interview, namely: to help students better understand the material, ensure students' understanding of the material, keep the flow of learning interactions structured and efficient, and as a tool for teachers to communicate non-verbally.

Abstract

The study explores Leech’s (1983) maxims of politeness in written feedback by Matthias Kaiser (MK) and David Valencia (DV) in responding to guests’ one star reviews at InterContinental LA Downtown Hotel. Using a qualitative method, the study analyzes how maxims of politeness are consistently applied despite differences in positions. The findings reveal that both MK, the Hotel Manager, and DV, the Director of Front Office, use all types of maxims of politeness, with approbation maxim being the most frequent, particularly in opening sentences to maintain the hotel’s image and expected guest relations. A combination of tact maxim and generosity maxim also appears frequently to address guests’ concerns while highlighting the hotel's efforts to improve. However, differences are identified in the ways MK and DV apply the same types of maxims of politeness through various sentences according to the main focus of their positions. They are also observed from the uses of different various and template sentences that both applied in their feedback. Differences clarify how MK’s is responsible for the hotel’s general operation, and DV is in charge of directly dealing with guests, showing maxims of politeness is crucial in the hospitality industry and influenced by high and low positions.

Abstract

This study examines code-mixing as used by Agnez Mo and Daniel Mananta in the podcast Daniel Tetangga Kamu (Your Neighbor Daniel), specifically in the episode Go International, Agnez Mo Selalu Bangga Mewakili Indonesia (Go International, Agnez Mo is Always Proud to Represent Indonesia). The analysis is based on Muysken’s (2000) theory of types of code-mixing. The research was conducted qualitatively, supported by simple quantitative calculations. The findings show that both speakers employed all three types of code-mixing. Moreover, congruent lexicalization, as the most complex type, was dominantly used by both, indicating strong language skills in both Agnez Mo and Daniel Mananta. However, Agnez Mo used code-mixing more frequently than Daniel Mananta in the video. This difference is more likely due to unequal speaking opportunities, as one served as the host and the other as the guest. Overall, this study provides useful findings and discussions on the significant patterns of code-mixing used in the podcast Daniel Tetangga Kamu (Your Neighbor Daniel). Future researchers are encouraged to explore code-mixing on newer digital platforms that are increasingly popular among youth, such as TikTok. Lastly, they are advised to complement Muysken’s (2000) structural framework with additional theories that examine social relationship or interactional functions.

Abstract

This creative thesis tells the story of a daughter from a Chinese-Indonesian family who faces many struggles when she gets into an interracial relationship. The story is told through a screenplay in the genre of family drama and romance. This thesis also brings attention to the experiences of minority daughters in cross-cultural relationships, which is something that is rarely shown in Indonesian films. Using Murray Bowen’s Family Systems Theory (1966), the screenplay explores why the parents reject the relationship, what the daughter goes through because of it, and how she fights for their approval. The story shows that the parents’ rejection comes from their anxieties due to past traumas and cultural expectations, which leads to emotional tension, unresolved issues, and a broken relationship with their daughter. In the end, the thesis shows how the daughter stands up for her relationship by practicing differentiation of self while maintaining emotional independence and having honest conversations with her parents and with the help of her supportive partner.

Abstract

The study analyzes translation on meaning. It aims to examine the extent to which Google Translate can preserve meaning and find the most common errors created by Google Translate when translating English customer reviews into Bahasa Indonesia from fiction books on the Goodreads website. Further, when analyzing the data, the writer used Bowker (2023) theory of translation on meaning and a qualitative approach. The study shows that some data were error-free, and some revealed that translation errors were found, where Google Translate chose a slightly incorrect choice of vocabulary and a wrong choice of vocabulary, leading to an error in meaning. In addition, other errors were classified into two categories: vocabulary errors and translation technique errors. Moreover, the study reveals that the most common errors were failing to translate idiomatic expressions. The study concludes that the data showed more errors than error-free.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the literal and contextual meanings of Coca-Cola’s advertising slogans. This study uses a qualitative method. The writers collected and analyzed the literal and contextual meanings of Coca-Cola advertising slogans, focusing on how each slogan conveyed both literal and contextual meaning. The literal meaning was defined based on the denotative meaning of the words, while the contextual meaning was defined based on the major historical events that happened at the time of the slogan release. The findings show that Coca-Cola utilized their slogans not just as a promotional tool but also to reflect the socio-cultural, political, economic, and business contexts of the time. This study concludes that Coca-Cola has creatively used language to align itself with the situations of the time, which help strengthen the connection with their customers. This validates Coca-Cola’s claims on their website that their slogans were created to reflect the time.

Abstract

This study discusses the persuasive strategies used by Kohcun and Mami Louisse on TikTok Live, using the theory of persuasive strategies by Beebe and Beebe (2018). This qualitative study analyzes transcripts from TikTok Live. The persuasive strategies that were present were inductive reasoning, causal reasoning, credible evidence, new evidence, specific evidence, evidence for a diverse audience, concrete examples, emotion-arousing words, fear appeals, and appeal to emotion of hope. This study also discusses the similarities and differences. The findings reveal that some strategies were used by both affiliators, some were not used by either, and the rest was used by one of the two affiliators. Although both affiliators employed multiple strategies in one utterance, Kohcun used multiple strategies more frequently and used the emotion-arousing words differently. Finally, the two affiliators employed different strategy combinations. The outcome of this study shed a spotlight on effective persuasive strategies for TikTok Live.
