Abstract

The paper examines historical development of Mu‘tazilite theological school of thought which arises from speculative method and influences of Greek thought that sparked the discursive tradition of early Islamic intellectual history. This essentially brought forth by the textualist and rationalist school and their classical debate that had formative influence in the rational school developed by the Mu‘tazilite in the early century. The paper studies the history and development of Mu‘tazilite theology and their conceptual and doctrinal impact on modern neo-Mu‘tazilite works. The study is based on classical works that gives significant textual and interpretive history of Mu‘tazilism. It uses qualitative method based on documentary survey and content analysis. The data were collected from related primary and secondary sources and analyzed using descriptive, normative, historical and jurisdictional approaches in order to make accurate and scientific conclusions. The finding shows that the ideology developed by the Mu‘tazilite were meant to respond to the foreign influence of deviant sects of the heretics, Magians, Manichaeism, atheism, naturalist and materialist by refuting their philosophical premises. This contributes to the development of kalam or speculative theology thanks to the flowering of Mu‘tazilite theology and their rational expression that help to foster higher ethical and religious norms and consciousness and influences contemporary thought that espouses neo-Mu‘tazilite outlook in the context of dakwah and the return to reason and their enlightened movement.

Abstract

This study explores the patterns of communication in religious moderation in Indonesia as a strategic approach to maintaining interreligious harmony and coexistence in a pluralistic society. Using a descriptive qualitative method and a critical review of the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ policies, supported by Habermas's theory of communicative action, this research identifies four key communication patterns: dialogical, educational, interpersonal, and media-based communication. Each pattern plays a vital role in promoting understanding, tolerance, and national commitment—core indicators of religious moderation. The study also highlights the significance of external factors such as education, media, and public policy in reinforcing inclusive and effective communication. Moreover, it emphasizes the need for further empirical and interdisciplinary research to better understand the dynamics of interreligious communication. The findings of this study aim to contribute to public policy development and to strengthen sustainable practices of religious moderation in Indonesia

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of TikTok trends on the behaviorof female students (santriwati) at Pondok Pesantren Mamba’ul Ma’arif DenanyarJombang. As a social media platform for entertainment and creative expression,TikTok has a dual effect: it can positively enhance emotional well-being but alsocause dependency that disrupts learning and religious practices. This researchemploys a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing interviews and observationsto gain an accurate understanding of changes in the santriwati’s behavior. Theresults indicate that exposure to TikTok content inconsistent with Islamic valuesencourages the adoption of lifestyles and norms that contradict pesantrenteachings, hinders the development of religious knowledge, and weakens religiousnorms and values. The study applies consumer culture theory to explain theidentity formation process influenced by symbolic consumption from socialmedia content. Therefore, it is crucial for pesantren institutions and families tostrengthen digital literacy, supervision, and comprehensive religious education, enabling santriwati to use TikTok wisely without compromising Islamic values. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for managing social media usewithin pesantren environments.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the communication patterns used by both migrant and local communities, as well as the efforts made to reduce the potential for social disintegration in Kampung Inggris, located in Dusun Tulungrejo, Pare District, Kediri Regency, East Java. Dusun Tulungrejo is known as a center for foreign language learning that attracts people from various regions across Indonesia, bringing with them diverse ethnic, religious, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. This phenomenon produces a dual impact: on one hand, it offers economic benefits for the local population, but on the other, it presents the risk of social conflict due to differences in cultural values and norms. The study employs a sociological approach based on structural functionalism, as proposed by Talcott Parsons, using the AGIL theory (Adaptation, Goal Attainment, Integration, and Latency) to understand the processes of adaptation and integration within a multicultural society. A qualitative method was used, with data collected through in-depth interviews, documentation, and field observation. The findings indicate that several forms of communication play a significant role in preventing social disintegration, namely interpersonal communication, group communication, and mass communication. Additionally, various social activities—such as village meetings, mutual aid for funerals (kerukunan kematian), group exercise sessions, and communal work (kerja bakti)—serve as key platforms for interaction and integration between local residents and migrants. This research is expected to serve as a foundation for fostering harmonious and sustainable communication between the two groups, while strengthening social integration within the Kampung Inggris community.

Abstract

This study explores the intersection between artificial intelligence (AI) and religious authority through a critical analysis of Antiqua et Nova, an official document issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Dicastery for Culture and Education of the Catholic Church. The document is examined as a theological and ethical response to the challenges posed by the rapid advancement of AI, particularly its influence on spiritual practices and the potential shift in symbolic authority within religious life. Employing a qualitative content analysis method, this research focuses on how the Catholic Church addresses the tension between technological innovation and the preservation of human dignity, moral responsibility, and spiritual authenticity. The discussion is situated within the framework of postmodern thought, which emphasizes the decentralization of truth claims, the rise of digital mediation, and the erosion of traditional epistemic hierarchies. In this context, Antiqua et Nova offers a cautious yet constructive approach: it neither rejects AI outright nor embraces it uncritically. Instead, it affirms the importance of ethical discernment, the primacy of human relationality, and the irreplaceability of embodied spiritual presence. This article concludes that the Catholic Church, through Antiqua et Nova, seeks to maintain the integrity of religious authority by articulating a theological framework that critically engages with AI while upholding the foundational principles of Christian anthropology and moral theology.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play an important role in economic growth and job creation. However, MSMEs often face challenges in the form of intense competition and unethical business practices. This study aims to explore the contribution of religious moderation to MSME development through a qualitative approach with a case study method. The concept of religious moderation is understood as an effort to balance religious values with sustainable and responsible business practices. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and participant observations of MSME actors who integrated the principles of moderation in their business activities. The results of the study indicate that religious moderation encourages the formation of reflective business ethics, inclusive cooperative relationships, and social orientation in business decision making. These findings indicate that religious moderation has a practical role in encouraging more ethical business practices and oriented towards social sustainability. Thus, religious moderation not only functions as a theological concept, but also as a value framework that can enrich the practice and orientation of MSME development amidst contemporary economic challenges.

Abstract

Post-reform, Indonesian civil society faces significant challenges in building democracy. This study examines the discourse on the political role of civil society according to intellectual groups in Surabaya and Malang, East Java. This research investigates intellectual groups in both cities that have established higher education bases and capabilities to enliven the provincial political space, using qualitative methods. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation of informants' thoughts from journals, books, and media articles. The main findings identify three intellectual groups with different discourses: 1) Critical Group, where civil society plays a role in building democracy by becoming a controlling force against state power; 2) Moderate Group, where civil society needs to cooperate with the state in building democracy; 3) Hybrid Group, where civil society needs to cooperate with the state while maintaining a critical stance. This research reveals the complexity of East Java intellectuals' views on the political role of civil society post-reform. The three groups demonstrate a spectrum of thought from oppositional control to critical collaboration, reflecting the dynamics of state-civil society relations in Indonesia's democratization process.
