Abstract

The Presence of Jehovah’s Witnesses which has contradictory concepts has harassed mostly Christian people, but it attracts many people to join this group. Even nowadays this denomination has a significant progress in number of population. This research is aimed to find the answer of the above problem and to describe about whether Jehovah’s Witnesses as a Christian denomination or religious sect in which its existence are opposed by Christian community in general. Subject of this research is focused on Jehovah’s Witnesses in Yogyakarta.   This Christian denomination becomes an international religious movement and has been assured in the 1945 Constitution as well as gets recognition from the government as a religious organization who has equal rights. In Yogyakarta, this group is also accepted; this is a picture of Yogyakarta as a multicultural city, and a town with high tolerance. In contrast, other Christian’s denominations have rejected this sect because it has different basic theology. The emergence of new denominations is caused by the absence of limitation in this open room. Therefore, it needs a “re-thinking” whether to leave this phenomenon free or to create a rule to control this situation so as to create harmony in managing religious life.

Abstract

Religious education plays an important role in Indonesia, not only in religious schools but also in all schools and in community development. A number of studies show that Indonesian religious education currently faces challenges in managing the problem of religious radicalism, especially in the context of a conservative society. This research focuses on various religious problems in the community that teachers often encounter during their interactions in schools and communities, with specific reference to Islamic education. This research was conducted using the Focus Group Discussion method which involved 28 religious education teachers from DKI Jakarta, Banten, and West Java. This research explores recurring religious issues in Indonesian society that require further attention in developing religious education programs. Looking at it from the perspective of religious literacy, this study found that multiculturalism, tolerance, and prejudice are the most recurring problems in society. Recognizing the growing challenges to Indonesia's plural society, religious literacy can be used as an alternative destination for religious education. Religious education must be directed towards students’ correct understanding of various religious beliefs and traditions, in addition to strengthening the faith and practice of students' own religious beliefs.

Abstract

The study evaluated Christologies among the Christians of Ndia, Kirinyaga West sub-county, Kenya. The objectives of the study were: to explore ontological Christologies; to investigate popular soteriological Christologies; to establish social, political and economic functional Christologies among Ndia Christians and; to examine the question of Christodicy in Ndia Christianity. 232 Christians were randomly selected to participate in the study. Questionnaires were issued to the participants. A 95.45% response rate was realized. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The data showed that ontological Christologies among the Ndia Christians ignored the humanity of Jesus and elevated him to the position of the traditional Gikuyu deity, Ngai, while soteriological Christologies were well balanced. Functional Christologies and the question of Christodicy were too spiritualized and Satan was given too prominent a position such that devil worship could result from glorification of Satan as a very powerful being who is able to oppose and cause Jesus to fail in his duties. The study recommends that churches in Ndia should teach sound doctrinal positions emphasizing on the humanity of Jesus, encourage people to appreciate the relationship between work and wealth and medicine and healing, avoid giving Satan a prominent position and to reinterpret the Gikuyu deity,Ngai, to take the place of God-the-Father as opposed to the place of God-the-Son for construction of a “wholesome” Gikuyu theology. The study will be useful to social workers, scholars, churches and government agencies working with the Ndia.

Abstract

Abstract This research aims to identify the scope of religious sermons and materials in different mosques in Solo, and identify multicultural and anti-multicultral aspects presented in sermons. Using qualitative method and content analysis, the research found the following conclusions: First, the diversity of communities—ethnic, cultural, or religious— has received little attention from the preacher at various mosques and majelis taklim. Second, in addition to multicultural values, sermons and religious lectures contains some values of anti-multicultural, such as prejudice and stereotypes against other groups, particularly in relation to the non-Muslim and western countries. Third, the sermons material and religious lectures implied the intensity of purification. Along with the movement, religious preaching implied resistance to local culture (Java), which is considered as the main source of religious impurity. Finally, the development trend of Islam in Solo implies religious radicalization as reflected in hostility towards the local culture, foreigners and non-Muslims.

Abstract

This paper will examine the scientific writing skills in the context of pesantren. The pesantren has a long scientific history in Indonesia, unfortunately, it has not been accompanied by a strong tradition of scientific writing. The research question formulated is to figure out what causes the tradition of scientific writing in pesantren is not that strong. To find out the answer, this study will use a qualitative approach by raising two pesantren cases that organize ma’had aly education, namely the Ma’had Aly Sukorejo Situbondo and the Ma’had Aly Manggisan Wonosobo.  This  study  found  that  the reason why  the tradition  of  writing in pesantren is not that strong is due to the lack of scientific writing being introduced in pesantren. Eventhough, they have been introduced to the scientific tradition and academic culture in deciding various socio-religious issues. This study recommends the need for a pesantren breakthrough in the developing of scientific writing culture.
