Abstract

The massive flooding that struck Medan in November 2025 severely affected the Tanjung Gusta neighborhood in Medan Helvetia subdistrict, prompting the Al-Yahdi Medan Foundation to serve as an evacuation center. It also contaminated residents' clean Water sources, while the public still judges Water safety by visual clarity alone, without understanding pH as a key chemical indicator. This community service activity, under the Pioneer Service Program of the Vocational Faculty, Universitas Sumatera Utara, aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of teachers, students, and parents at Al-Yahdi Foundation in assessing Water potability after the flood through education on pH parameters and training in portable pH meters, complementing simpler pH indicator (litmus) paper. Conducted at Al-Yahdi Foundation from April to November 2026, the activity comprised coordination, instrument design and validation, outreach, demonstrations, hands-on training, distribution of instruments and manuals, mentoring, and pretest–posttest evaluations. Average comprehension scores rose from 43.8 ('insufficient') to 87.0 ('good'). pH of Water samples from partner communities ranged from 5.9 to 7.2, with some outside the safe range set by Indonesia's Ministry of Health (6.5–8.5). This initiative effectively raised public awareness and fostered self-reliance in testing Water quality before consumption during post-flood recovery, supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 6.

Abstract

Human resource management (HRM) plays a vital role in enhancing the productivity and sustainability of start-up businesses. However, many novice entrepreneurs in West Boneatiro Village, Buton Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, still face challenges in managing human resources due to limited managerial knowledge and practical skills. This community service program aimed to strengthen the HRM capacity of novice entrepreneurs through training and intensive mentoring to improve business productivity. The program was conducted using a participatory approach involving needs assessment, interactive training, workshops on developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), job descriptions, and simple Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), followed by mentoring and evaluation using pre-test and post-test instruments. A total of 25 novice entrepreneurs participated in the program. The evaluation results showed a significant improvement in participants' understanding of HRM practices, with the average pre-test score increasing from 55.73 to 86.20 in the post-test, representing a 54.70% improvement. Furthermore, participants successfully developed basic HRM documents and applied structured work allocation and simple performance appraisal systems within their businesses. These improvements contributed to better workforce management, enhanced operational efficiency, and increased business productivity. The findings demonstrate that HRM mentoring is an effective community empowerment strategy for strengthening entrepreneurial managerial capacity and supporting the sustainable development of micro and small enterprises in West Boneatiro Village.

Abstract

Stunting is a long-term nutritional problem that affects children’s physical and cognitive development and poses a health challenge in the community, especially within the working area of the Malawili Health Center in Sorong Regency, Southwest Papua. One of the main causes is the sub-optimal nutrition literacy among mothers of toddlers. This community service activity aimed to increase mothers’ knowledge of balanced nutrition for stunting prevention through health education using leaflets. The activity was carried out at Posyandu Mentari, within the working area of the Malawili Health center, on July 9, 2026, involving 30 mothers of toddlers. The method used was health education accompanied by a knowledge assessment through pretest and posttest. The results showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 77.67 to 84.33 (a difference of 6.66 points or a relative increase of 8.6%), with the proportion of mothers in the good knowledge category rising from 60.0% to 86.7%. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test results showed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest (Z=-2.950; p=0.010; p<0.05). It can be concluded that nutrition education using leaflets is effective in increasing the knowledge of mothers with toddlers and has the potential to support efforts to accelerate stunting reduction in Sorong Regency.
