Abstract

Household-scale industries (HSI) based on local resources, such as tofu and tempeh production, play a crucial role in supporting local economies. However, these enterprises often face challenges due to limited access to suitable technology and ineffective marketing strategies, which compromise product quality and competitiveness. This community service program, conducted by the Department of Agricultural Product Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Mulawarman University, with the support of the BIMA Kemdiktisainstek Grant, aimed to strengthen the capacity of a tofu and tempeh household enterprise in Samarinda, Indonesia. The program introduced an Ultrafiltration-UV water filtration system and provided product branding training. A combination of lectures, discussions, and Participatory Action Research (PAR) was employed to ensure active partner participation. Laboratory results confirmed improvements in production water quality, particularly reduced TDS, turbidity, and color, as well as pH adjustment toward the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) range. Branding training enhanced the partner’s knowledge of brand identity, packaging design, and digital promotion, resulting in prototype packaging and basic promotional content. The PAR method effectively enhanced the partners’ understanding of filtration system installation and maintenance, as well as brand development and design. This effectiveness is attributed to the method’s ability to ensure active participant involvement throughout the training process. Overall, the integration of appropriate technology with marketing capacity building proved effective in improving product quality, competitiveness, and sustainability of household-scale food enterprises.

Abstract

Global developments demand cross-border learning models that are not only academic in nature but also capable of integrating religious values, social regulations, and modern scientific knowledge in understanding contemporary issues. However, studies examining how international guest lectures can serve as a medium to interconnect these three aspects remain limited, thereby highlighting the need for research that illustrates the pedagogical and social contributions of cross-national community engagement. This study aims to analyze how students at Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS) Malaysia comprehend current issues through the perspectives of Islamic values, social regulations, and culturally rooted health traditions in an international guest lecture setting. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using participant observation, document analysis, and reflective interactive discussions. The activity took place at DK Ishak Baharom, UIS Malaysia, involving 70 students and featuring three lecturers from Indonesia who presented topics on: (1) legal regulations for combating online gambling, (2) zakat as an Islamic financial instrument and social policy, and (3) traditional jamu and herbal medicine as components of culturally based modern healthcare. The findings indicate that students developed a comprehensive understanding of: (a) the prohibition of online gambling, which is grounded not only in economic considerations but also in moral and spiritual dimensions; (b) zakat as an empowerment instrument requiring effective regulation to generate meaningful social impact; and (c) herbal traditions as cultural heritage aligned with the halal–thayyib principles and supported by scientific legitimacy. Measurable outcomes include enhanced critical awareness, strengthened Islamic literacy related to contemporary issues, and positive participant responses reflected in high enthusiasm and analytical questioning during discussions. This study affirms that international guest lectures can serve as a transformative model of cross-border community engagement, strengthening academic collaboration while providing an integrative learning space that connects Islamic values, social regulations, and modern scientific knowledge.

Abstract

This Community Service Program (PKM) aimed to address fundamental educational challenges—namely the low basic skills in Literacy and Numeracy, and the limited understanding of National Insight (Wawasan Kebangsaan) and Religious Knowledge—among students at the Learning Center (Sanggar Belajar or SB) Sungai Buloh, Selangor, Malaysia. The main issues identified included poor basic reading, writing, and arithmetic (calistung) abilities, along with limited access to adequate formal education. The PKM Team implemented an Integrated Intervention Model combining creative learning methods and educational games based on interactive media (such as flashcards, the “10 Menit Lancar Membaca” book, and the “Spin and Speak” game). The program was carried out over four weeks, encompassing observation stages, collaborative schedule arrangement with the center's management, material delivery, and achievement evaluation. Evaluation results showed significant improvements across four main indicators:1) Literacy: The average reading ability of participants increased from 58% to 85% (a 27% increase), based on tests of basic vocabulary mastery and simple text comprehension.2) Numeracy: The accuracy of basic arithmetic (addition and subtraction) increased from an average of 65% to 89% (a 24% increase). 2) National Insight (Wawasan Kebangsaan): Knowledge of state symbols and important figures increased by 35% from the pre-test score. 3) Religious Knowledge: The percentage of students capable of memorizing a minimum of five short surahs/daily prayers increased from 40% to 75%. Overall, the approach based on the Holistic-Diagnostic approach proved effective. The tangible contribution of this PKM is not only limited to improving students' cognitive and affective competence but also successfully strengthening social and cultural ties between the program implementers and the local community at SB Sungai Buloh.

Abstract

Household organic waste remains a major environmental challenge in Desa Janti, Kabupaten Sidoarjo. The community demonstrates high awareness of environmental issues, yet access to practical technical training is still limited. This community service program aims to enhance residents’ capacity in managing organic waste through training and hands-on practice in constructing biopore infiltration holes, using a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach. The program involved 15 participants and was implemented in three main stages: socialization, practical training, and continuous mentoring. Participants’ success was assessed through direct observation, satisfaction questionnaires, and in-depth interviews. The results showed that 13 participants (85%) successfully applied biopore techniques in their homes, and environmental cadres were formed to support and guide other residents. Beyond the direct impact on organic waste reduction, the program fostered collective awareness in maintaining environmental cleanliness. Scientifically, this activity demonstrates the effectiveness of CBPR in empowering communities for sustainable household waste management and provides a replicable model for other regions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of the Santri Link application as a digital financial education tool to reduce consumptive behavior among students at Mathla’ul Anwar Islamic Boarding School, Pontianak. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method, collecting data through observation and questionnaires distributed to 50 respondents. The Likert scale was used to measure students’ agreement levels toward statements regarding their spending behavior and the influence of Santri Link. The findings indicate that the use of the Santri Link application has not increased students’ consumptive behavior. On the contrary, it has encouraged them to manage their spending more wisely, save money, and reduce impulsive buying tendencies. The results also reveal that Santri Link contributes to improving students’ financial literacy and understanding of Islamic financial principles, such as moderation (al-iqtishād) and avoidance of extravagance (isrāf). Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) of the Forest Farmer Group (KTH) Permata have traditionally marketed local products such as instant ginger herbal drink, instant turmeric herbal drink, instant temulawak, and forest honey using conventional methods, resulting in limited market reach and suboptimal income. Marketing through social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp has not been fully optimized due to limited understanding of digital marketing management, particularly the use of websites as official marketing media. This community service activity aimed to provide training and mentoring for MSMEs KTH Permata members on the utilization of Google Sites as a digital marketing medium. The methods included observation to identify existing conditions and problems, discussions with partners to formulate solutions, documentation, implementation of Google Sites management training, and evaluation through questionnaires to measure improvements in participants’ skills. The results showed that the training and mentoring activities improved participants’ understanding and skills, with 80% of members successfully creating and publishing Google Sites websites independently, while 70% were able to manage and update product content on a sustainable basis. The outputs of this activity included the availability of an official marketing website for MSMEs KTH Permata featuring business profiles, product catalogs, and contact information, which contributed to expanding market reach and increasing product visibility. In conclusion, limited knowledge and skills were the main barriers to digital marketing adoption; however, the training and mentoring proved effective in strengthening MSME capacity to utilize Google Sites as a digital marketing tool.
