Abstract

Haroa tradition is one of the traditions practiced by the Muna community, Southeast Sulawesi. Through this research, the author analyzes the sociological role of the haroa tradition for the heterogeneous Muna community. This research focuses on the role of the haroa ceremony in enhancing togetherness and solidarity as well as instilling cultural values that have been lived by the community. This research used qualitative methods with literature review and interview techniques. The author found that the haroa ceremony functions as a space for the community to foster togetherness and build brotherhood and unity in living together. The process of providing food, togetherness in prayer and eating together becomes a means of building closeness, kinship and brotherhood for the community. In addition, the author also found that the instillation of cultural values is also emphasized in this tradition. The scholars provide values that can be a guide for the community in living together. The use of cultural elements in instilling values in the community is in line with the thoughts of Yusuf Al- Qaradhawi. Al- Qaradhawi emphasized the importance of using cultural elements in instilling Islamic values in the community. The use of cultural elements must be maintained so as not to conflict with Islamic law.

Abstract

Local wisdom examines an essential aspect of cultural identity, social values, and community resilience, particularly within three heritage sites. This study aims to analyze the forms and functions of local wisdom embodied in three significant cultural sites in East Java: the tomb of Sunan Ampel, the tomb of Sunan Drajat, and Bajang Ratu Temple. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through observation, documentation, and literature review to ensure systematic and valid interpretation. The findings reveal that each site reflects distinctive yet interconnected forms of local wisdom. The Sunan Ampel cemetery emphasizes moderation, spiritual devotion, and personal transformation, as seen in the figures of Sunan Ampel Lembu ,Peteng, Mbah Sholeh, and Mbah Bolong. Sunan Drajat site highlights social welfare, humanitarian values, and moral responsibility, particularly through the symbolic meanings of its stairways, which promote empathy, vigilance, perseverance, spiritual discipline, and charity. Meanwhile, Bajang Ratu Temple demonstrates a synthesis of Hindu-Buddhist philosophy and local wisdom through its architectural design, narrative reliefs, and symbolic ornaments, representing moral teachings, cosmic balance, spiritual protection, and transformation.

Abstract

The expansion of tourism development in Malino Subdistrict, Tinggimoncong District, Gowa Regency, has driven significant changes in the structure and function of space. The construction of villas, accommodations, and new tourist destinations has not only increased economic activity but has also triggered the conversion of agricultural land and green spaces into commercial areas. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of spatial production and reproduction resulting from tourism expansion, as well as the position of local communities within these changes. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving local residents, traders, and tourism workers. The data were thematically analyzed and interpreted using David Harvey’s three-dimensional spatial framework, namely absolute space, relative space, and relational space. The findings indicate that tourism expansion in Malino is dominated by capital forces that transform patterns of spatial ownership and utilization, leading to socio-economic inequality and environmental degradation. Within this context, local communities develop spatial reproduction strategies as forms of adaptation and negotiation, including the transformation of residential spaces into economic spaces (such as homestays, food stalls, and tourism services), shifts in livelihoods toward the informal tourism sector, the formation of kinship-based cooperation, and the strengthening of social networks with tourism actors and capital owners. These strategies demonstrate that local communities actively reproduce their living spaces to maintain access, social identity, and livelihood sustainability amid the dominance of capital in Malino’s tourism development.

Abstract

Smartwatch advertisements not only function as a medium for promoting technology but also as a space for the production of meanings regarding the body, health, and femininity in contemporary consumer culture. The female body in advertisements is often represented as a symbol of ideal health, productivity, and measurable self-control. This article aims to analyze the practice of commodifying the female body in smartwatch advertisements through a critical anthropological perspective within the framework of power relations and body normalization. This research uses a qualitative approach with visual analysis and critical discourse analysis methods on several advertisements that feature women as the main models. The results show that the female body is not only constructed as a visual object, but also as a moral object that is monitored, measured, and optimized through wearable technology. Smartwatches are positioned as devices that produce gender power relations through visual representations and narratives of health morality. These advertisements normalize ideal body standards while constructing health as a commodity that can be achieved through technology consumption, thus making the female body a primary arena for the operation of capitalism and power.

Abstract

Traditional rituals constitute an essential component of the cultural system of traditional societies, as they embody symbolic, social, and religious values that represent collective identity. This study aims to examine the implementation process and symbolic meanings of the Wulla Poddu tradition in the socio-cultural life of the Tarung Village community, Loli District, West Sumba Regency. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, utilizing observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving customary leaders, ritual practitioners, and local community members. The findings indicate that the Wulla Poddu tradition is carried out through eight main stages, tauna marapu, toba wanno, deke kawuku, kaleisuna, massusara, mana’a, kallango, and lulli, which take place over a one-month period and are led by traditional authorities. Each stage contains symbolic meanings associated with reverence for ancestors within the Marapu belief system. Furthermore, the tradition encompasses religious, social, moral, and ecological dimensions that function to strengthen social solidarity, regulate community behavior, and maintain harmony between humans and nature. Functionally, Wulla Poddu serves as a cultural mechanism that sustains social integration and preserves the continuity of traditional values within the community.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the forms of healing activities undertaken by students and analyze how they interpret healing as part of social dynamics. The study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to understand students' subjective experiences. Informants were selected using purposive sampling from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Language and Literature, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, and Faculty of Psychology. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data validity was checked using triangulation techniques. Data analysis techniques were carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that healing activities include simple activities such as playing games, watching digital content, reading books, cleaning rooms, to outdoor activities such as walks to the beach, mountains, parks, or nature tours with friends. Healing is defined as an activity carried out in leisure time to strengthen social relations and build self-image on social media. Thus, healing among students is a phenomenon that functions as a representation of lifestyle and social identity in contemporary digital culture. Healing cannot be separated from the social context, digital culture, and academic structures surrounding students. From a leisure perspective, healing can be understood as not only an act of coping with stress, but also a social practice imbued with symbolic meaning.
