Abstract

This study examines financial literacy in the context of poverty by focusing on the negotiation between state policies and local values within poor communities. Financial literacy is often positioned as a neutral and technocratic instrument to enhance welfare and financial inclusion. However, such an approach frequently overlooks socio-cultural dimensions, power relations, and local economic practices that shape the lived experiences of poverty. This study employs a qualitative approach through a critical literature review of national and international publications from 2020 to 2025, including Scopus- and SINTA-indexed journals as well as relevant policy documents. The analysis is conducted thematically to explore how financial literacy is constructed within state policies, the role of local values, and the forms of negotiation, adaptation, and resistance exhibited by poor communities toward financial literacy programs. The findings indicate that financial literacy has ambivalent effects: while it can enhance financial awareness and access to formal financial services, it may also weaken social solidarity and transform community-based moral economies. Poor communities are not passive recipients of policy interventions but demonstrate agency through the reinterpretation of economic practices and symbolic resistance to individualistic approaches. This study highlights the importance of a policy anthropology perspective in designing culturally sensitive and contextually grounded financial literacy policies as part of sustainable poverty alleviation efforts.

Abstract

Ecological wisdom is an integral part of the life practices of the Bajo people, who have traditionally depended on marine ecosystems as their primary living space. This study aims to examine the forms of ecological wisdom of the Bajo, reflected in customary prohibitions, philosophical values, and local knowledge that regulate the relationship between humans and the marine environment. Customary prohibitions such as restrictions on fishing during certain periods, limits on the use of destructive fishing gear, and bans on taking marine life during breeding seasons function as social mechanisms to maintain ecosystem balance. The philosophical values of the Bajo people view the sea as a sacred living space with spiritual significance thus it must be respected and its sustainability preserved. This perspective shapes an ecological ethic that emphasizes the principle of harmony between humans and nature, as well as intergenerational responsibility. In addition, the local knowledge of the Bajo people regarding seasons, ocean currents, wind directions, and the behavior of marine organisms serves as a basis for determining fishing times and patterns of selective resource use. These practices demonstrate that the ecological wisdom of the Bajo people functions both as a system of cultural values and as an adaptive strategy for dealing with the dynamics of the marine environment. Thus, the ecological wisdom of the Bajo people plays an important role in supporting the sustainable conservation of coastal and marine environments.

Abstract

E-commerce is one example of the development of digital technology today. The existence of e-commerce facilitates the buying and selling of goods and services. Students are one example of a social group that is prone to consumptive behavior. This study analyzes the factors behind the causes of consumptive behavior among students using sociological theories from Max Weber and Erving Goffman. The research method used is qualitative research using secondary data related to consumptive behavior and e-commerce. The results show that, from Max Weber's perspective, consumptive behavior influenced by discounts is explained by the background of students' consumptive behavior through affective, traditional, and instrumental rationality. Meanwhile, Erving Goffman's perspective explains that students' consumptive behavior is influenced by the symbolic interactionism of digital e-commerce technology in terms of colors, icons, and notifications, which implicitly cause students to open them significantly. Discounts not only function as an economic strategy but also as a social symbol that influences students' consumptive behavior. The results of this study identified several factors that may occur and efforts to prevent them. For that further research can examine other factors and subjects more broadly in order to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of all aspects.

Abstract

The development of social media has given rise to a culture of flexing as a social practice that is increasingly strengthening among Generation Z. Flexing not only represents a lifestyle flaunting behavior, but also functions as a symbolic strategy to gain social recognition in the digital arena. This study aims to analyze the culture of flexing on social media as a social practice using Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework, specifically the concepts of habitus, arena, and symbolic capital. The research method used is a literature study by reviewing relevant national and international journal articles published in the period 2020–2025. The results of the study indicate that social media acts as an arena for social status competition, where the digital habitus of Generation Z forms a disposition that normalizes flaunting behavior as something normal. Economic capital is converted into cultural capital through the visual aesthetics of content, which is then transformed into symbolic capital in the form of prestige, reputation, and social legitimacy based on digital engagement. The practice of flexing has dual implications, namely it can increase self-confidence and motivation, but also trigger social pressure, excessive social comparison, and status anxiety. This research contributes to the development of a theoretical understanding of digital symbolic capital and provides a conceptual foundation for strengthening critical media literacy among Generation Z.

Abstract

The development of social media in the digital era has reshaped the ways beauty is understood, particularly among Generation Z women in Indonesia. Modern beauty standards that emphasize fair skin, slim bodies, and idealized appearances are widely disseminated through social media, popular culture, and the beauty industry, creating social pressure that influences how women perceive themselves and their bodies. This study aims to analyze how global beauty standards are constructed and reproduced through social media, as well as how such social pressure is experienced by Generation Z women in their everyday social lives. This research employs a library research method with a qualitative descriptive approach by reviewing books and scholarly articles published between 2022 and 2025 that are relevant to beauty standards, social media, and Generation Z women. The findings indicate that modern beauty standards are social constructs that function as mechanisms of social control over women’s bodies. Social pressure emerges through processes of social comparison, body shaming practices, beauty privilege, and the commodification of women’s bodies in digital spaces. These conditions affect the formation of negative self-image, reduced self-confidence, increased psychosocial vulnerability, and the encouragement of consumptive behavior among Generation Z women. In addition, beauty standards reinforce gender inequality and symbolic violence that operate subtly through social norms perceived as natural and unquestioned. Overall, this study demonstrates that beauty standards are not merely aesthetic concerns but are embedded within social mechanisms that shape identity, social relations, and the psychosocial well-being of Generation Z women in Indonesia.
