Abstract

There is a strong link between religious fundamentalist movements and the globalization (economic) project. In the context of Western civilization, fundamentalist movements are closely linked to the “critical discussion” on the antinomy of modernity. These movements reached a new phase in the second half of the 20 century, namely a “confrontation” between Western civilization and the East (Islam). On the one hand, the Western civilization model of the globalization project grows due to a certain form of fundamentalism within itself, namely an economic fundamentalism. On the other hand fundamentalist movements within Islam which turn religion into ideology, put forward a programme for the “universalisation” of Islam as the basis of a world order. The world order which is presently dominated by the Western civilization model, characterized by the capitalistic and the secular, has to end and be replaced by a world order based on Islamic law. This movement works on a principle of compulsion. The “rivalry” between the two has no connection at all with a “clash of civilizations” but rather with the fact that globalization in its present form is only possible for a rich elite minority. A middle way must be worked out, not the globalization of the economic or political system, nor the globalization of a particular ideology, whether secular or religious, but rather the globalization of Aufklärung (enlightenment) and of solidarity. Kata-kata kunci: Globalisasi, modernitas, gerakan fundamentalis, islamisme, ideologi, Aufklärung, “imperialisme budaya”, sekularisasi.

Abstract

The Dogmatic Constitution Dei Verbum on Divine Revelation opens us towards God’s self revelation in the whole universe in order that all be gathered in Christ into full communion with the Triune God. This official teaching sees revelation as a dialogue of love, and a response in faith which is personal, dynamic, historical and centred on Christ and the Spirit. With this broad understanding of revelation, the Dei Verbum Constitution goes on to open up ways of interpreting the Scriptures and understanding how the Scriptures have been read in history (Tradition), thus opening up Bible study as the soul of theology, as well as the anima of prayer, liturgy and spirituality. The local Churches of Indonesia, Asia and the world, including the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), have responded to the invitation to participate in this divine dialogue of love by receiving God’s Word graciously and proclaiming it faithfully in daily life. The essay ends by noting the contribution of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, the Catholic Biblical Federation, Lembaga Biblica Indonesia, St. Paul’s Biblical Centre Ledalero, and the Biblical Apostolate Diocesan Commissions of Nusa Tenggara Ecclesial Province in Indonesia which have facilitated Bible sharing in grassroots communities. Abstract

If we wish to understand a totalitarian system as a whole, we need first to understand the central role of the concentration camp as a laboratorium to experiment in total domination. Arendt’s analysis of totalitarianism in the twentieth century shows how a totalitarian regime cannot survive without terror; and terror will not be effective without concentration camps. Experiments in concentration camps had as their purpose, apart from wiping out any freedom or spontaneity, the abolishing of space between human beings, abolishing space for politics. Thus, totalitarianism did not mirror only the politics of extinction, but also the extinction of politics. As a way forward, Arendt analyses political theory that forces the reader to understand power no longer under the rubric of domination or violence – although this avenue is open – but rather under the rubric of freedom. Arendt is convinced that the life of a destroyed nation can be restored by mutual forgiveness and mutual promises, two abilities rooted in action. Political action, as with other acts, is identical with the ability to commence something new. Abstract

The phenomenon of dualism in practising the faith among Catholics who converted from Sumbanese ethnic religion (Marapu) is a real challenge faced by the Catholic Church in Sumba. Such dualism is transparent in the practices of using simultaneously both Catholic and Marapu rites in the popular religiosity of Sumbanese Catholics. Both Catholic priests and Marapu ritual leaders are asked by the people, on different occassions, to perform rituals for their benefit. These two kinds of ritual leaders are equally considered as mediators of communication between human beings and the supernatural world. Such a practice reveals a deep encounter between Catholic and Sumbanese ethnic religion regarding the form, direction and means of communication between humans and supernatural beings. The author’s fieldwork at Weepangali in the district of Sumba Barat Daya, from January to August 2013, reveals a new concept and understanding of mediation, that is a mixture between a Catholic concept and a Marapu one. Some supernatural figures in Marapu religion are equated with those in Catholic devotions. This new understanding, however, is not formally and institutionally recognized in either the Marapu or Catholic hierarchies, but rather found more informally and spontaneously in the religious experience of Sumbanese Catholics. This phenomenon indicates the strong mutual influence between Catholic and Marapu experience, after a prolonged and ongoing encounter. Kata-kata Kunci: Dunia empiris, dunia meta-empiris, ritual Marapu, doktrin Katolik, pengalaman religius, pengantaraan, perjumpaan.

Abstract

Keywords: Schulze, Aenesidemus, Fichte, Kant, critical philosophy, skepticism, Reinhold, faculty of representation.

Abstract

Abstract: This article looks at the issues of discipleship and citizenship in the context of Asian Christianity in terms of “belonging”. The concept of discipleship refers to the concept of belonging within the church, while the concept of citizenship refers to belonging within the nation-state. Thus the issue of belonging within these two spheres is a sub-set of the questions relating to public theology within Asian Christianity. The first issue considered is the question as to what extent the assumptions of public Christian theology actually are the assumptions of post-Enlightenment western Christian theology alone, and therefore have only very indirect links with Asian Christianity. The second issue is the intercultural nature of Christian theology, and its implications for public theology, including discipleship and citizenship. The third issue is the reality of Asian society and Asian Christian theology, particularly public theology. Where Christianity is a minority (albeit, large minority), what is the contribution of a public Christian theology to the debates of civil society? In this section the author looks at the concrete reality of violence in Asia, and seek to analyse how the dynamics of Pauline theology frequently used in Asia engage with the fact of violence. Finally the article seeks to answer the question as to what we can learn from Asian Christian contexts on the interaction of faith and culture in relation to Christian discipleship and engaged citizenship. Keywords: kekristenan, budaya, teologi publik, gereja, lokal, global, Asia, reformasi.

Abstract

Half century after the anti-Communist Tragedy in Indonesia, including East Nusa Tenggara Province, one of the important questions need to be coped with is the impact of the Tragedy to the perpetrators. Some of those who took part in the arrest, persecution, and murder of the victims, are still alive. Because of the taboo of talking about the Tragedy and its impact among Indonesia society, they hide their feeling for nearly 50 years. They hold guilty/sin, shame, and hero feelings at the same time. Their narratives offer us rich theological themes and pastoral challenge. This paper tries to identify the theological themes arose in the narratives of some perpetrators.

Abstract

This essay looks at human trafficking as the underbelly of an unregulated global economy. Using data collated by the UN and studies undertaken by independent research institutes, the global pattern of trafficking is outlined before focusing on Southeast Asia, a key hub in this modern form of slavery. Key characteristics and motivations are delineated with reference to UN definitions and legislation in Southeast Asia. Attention is given to the global need for cheap labour, sex workers and the widespread trafficking of children. Then, the phenomenon is seen through the eyes of faith drawing on four key biblical attitudes: upholding human dignity (protection), reaching to the heart (prevention), naming the sin (prosecution), and extending Gospel community (partnering). Abstract

The Second Vatican Council has its own resonance which has impacted not only the Roman Catholic Church but other Churches also, indeed the world as a whole. This was the conviction of Pope John XXIII when he announced his idea for a Universal Council. He wished to place the Church within the rapidly changing modern world. One change is in attitudes towards other religions which has opened the path towards dialogue. Now, 50 years later, can the council still speak to us about Church renewal and unity? We note progress in Indonesia such as dialogue between religions and religious convictions, the ecumenical movement which has spread, for instance through the acceptance of a common translation of the Bible. Abstract

Devotion to Mary is one of the most popular religious practices among Catholics, and can be considered one of the oldest forms of popular religiosity. Marian devotions emerged spontaneously as a mixture of elements from local cultures and the Christian faith. However, such practices can become problematic when they overstress certain aspects of human experience together with the role of Mary. This article discusses a text of "The Way of the Cross" which was composed in a dialect of the Lamaholot language as used on the isle of Solor, East Flores.
