Abstract

Identity, as what defines one’s self directly, touches on the question of human existence: how we identify ourselves and affirm our identity and group admist plural reality as with the nation of Indonesia. Indonesian citizens affirm their identity which is religious and at the same time national. As citizens, on the one hand, we give rational reasons when making political demands, and not simply emotional preferences. On the other hand these reasons have a public quality, that is need to be capable of convincing people of various beliefs and nations. For this to take place there needs to be a discernment process between what is a personal faith matter and those convictions that need to be defended in the public square. Abstract

Keywords: “Worldlessness”, crimes against humanity, anti-Semitism, imperialism, “rightlessness”.

Abstract

Human trafficking, which has become a serious problem in our time, also existed centuries ago, especially when slavery was commonly accepted. The Book of Genesis shares the story of the selling by his brothers of a person named Joseph. Different from human trafficking these days, the reason for selling Joseph was more about envy than money. Envy triggered the brothers’ plot to eliminate Joseph from their family. Whatever the reason, in Egypt Joseph was put on the auction block and bought and sold as a bill of goods. The Joseph-Judah story tracks the first human trafficking case in the Bible inviting the reader to be aware of how people are bought and sold. The sellers –Jospeh’s brothers and especially Judah – do not want to be known as the culprits. Nobody is willing to admit commiting this crime, instead, one always pretends to be innocent. Meanwhile Joseph’s identity is stripped away as the story continues. Human trafficking, always involves the loss of one’s social networks coupled with elimination of one’s identity. Abstract

The reform of the liturgy is to be “marked by the gong of tradition and the spirit of genuine renewal”. This “motto” of liturgical renewal reminds us of the importance of being aware that both tradition and our contemporary situation need to be experienced together in our celebrations. The purpose of the liturgical renewal by the Second Vatican Council, was not renewal for the sake of renewal itself, but rather so that celebrations produced by such reform are meaningful for the active participation of the people of God. To achieve this ideal, judicious considerations need to be taken regarding tradition and contemporary developments. One important fruit of the analysis of the Second Vatican Council is that active participation should become ever wider and deeper in our liturgical celebrations. Participation that is both active and conscious whether physically, together with the whole rich genius of the culture, or spiritually, is a part of the richness of grace for which we should indeed thank God. The presence of Sacrosanctum concilium invites all social levels and classes to participate actively and consciously in sacrificial celebrations and in the Lord’s Supper. Abstract

There is increasing public attention about HIV/AIDS networks of concern. This option for and with HIV/AIDS survivors demonstrates human compassion but also expresses the struggle for life. And precisely here we find a unique, deep and challenging inspiration in the Bible. The story of the healing at the pool of Siloam/Bethzatha (John 5) is a cry for compassionate justice for those who suffer, including those surviving HIV/AIDS. This essay records a reading of John 5 by members of an HIV/AIDS survivor and mutual support group. They relate who Jesus is for them and how, in Jesus, they have regained their self respect and the will to live. Both their experience of pain and rejection by both the local church and their individual families, and their restored humanity accomplished by themselves through the healing touch of Jesus, challenges the rest of us to cast aside our ingrained prejudices and, together with these survivors, experience the liberating touch of Jesus in our lives too. The healing touch of Jesus can destroy any reluctance we might still have, based on the prejudiced values of the surrounding society. This “popular” reading of John 5 shows how Jesus opened up a circle of freedom and salvation and can be read alongside more academic exegetical accounts. Keywords: penderita, ODHA, perhatian, belas kasih, demi kehidupan, kairos, peduli.

Abstract

This essay examines citizenship struggles in the small Indonesian town of Maumere during two decades of intensive state formation after decolonization in 1945. These struggles culminated in the bloody anticommunist purges of late 1965 and early 1966, which in this area mainly reflected “ethnic” tensions. They should not be seen merely as evidence of a deeply divided society, of elite factional fights over resources, or of state institutions that were too weak to exert effective control over society (though all those observations have some truth as well). Rather they were contentious efforts to establish new forms of public authority in the broad space between state and society. Novel informal institutions and rituals developed in the interstices between state and society. Christian Lund has called them “twilight institutions”. They all aimed to include ordinary people in public affairs. They were clientelistic, and their rivalry sometimes produced violence. Yet they were essentially about bringing ordinary people into a productive relationship with the new state; that is, they were about citizenship. The greatest irony of the “twilight institutions” is that they only became instruments of total exclusion after the central state began to assert itself decisively also in small provincial towns such as this. The history of “twilight institutions” continues to impress itself on actually existing forms of citizenship in the provinces today.

Abstract

A social trend that should trigger an emotional reaction in Indonesia as a nation that has enjoyed independence for the past 68 years, is none other than human trafficking. Indonesia is listed at 114 in the register of this modern form of slavery with around 220 thousand victims9 . Globally, there are around 29.8 million victims of human trafficking. Indonesia is one of the 17 source, transit and destination countries, involving criminal activities such as sex slavery, forced labour and child procurement. This situation is pretty evenly spread among all of Indonesia’s Provinces. The roots, the process and a way forward are highlighted in this brief study. Abstract

To recall the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, in the first place the author describes the basic texture of the council, namely its spirit of renewal and dialogue and its emphasis upon the church as the people of God. Then follows a brief response to the event itself leading to questions that remain open, mentioning some four groups of issues that were not settled by the council. The next section looks at some limitations in councilar teaching which made implementation difficult in the post-counciliar period. These include the non-awareness of the council participants of the need for legally binding decree, and the way in which, time and again, mutually contradictory statements are placed side by side in the documents without any attempt to relate the two contrary directions implied. By making use of these two weaknesses, the Roman Curia in particular has tried to neutralise a number of reforms, among others, by recentralising the decision making processes of the Catholic Church. One challenge we face 50 years after the council was openned, is to implement the principle of subsidiarity as well and as intensive as possible, and to recall the most fundamental principle in the Catholic Church, namely that each one must follow their conscience. Therefore, in openness to the gospel and conscious of the signs of the times, the struggle for renewal should take place in constructive non-obedience to efforts for restoration being undertaken in a number of quarters. Abstract

Globalization, as Anthony Giddens defines it, denotes a shift in the spatial form of human organization and activity to transcontinental or inter-regional patterns of activity, interaction and exercise of power. Under the spirit of capitalism, it can destroy our jobs, hollow out the decision-making power of government, and even threaten the nation-state as the nub of our kind of democracy. Critics of globalization worry about the inability of governments to set their own economic policies. They also worry about the increased power of financial markets to cause economic havoc. Looking at the ethical proposal to this problematic context, this article proposes that we move from an ethical study of the rational foundations of moral norms to a political reflection on the democratic construction of social norms. In such democratic construction, the plurality of views of life will be protected against overweening global capitalism. Kata-kata kunci: Globalisasi, kapitalisme, etika, demokrasi

Abstract

The author starts from the fact that often enough those who test positive for HIV, or who are suffering from AIDS, feel cursed by God, and question why God has punished them. They experience discrimination and are stigmatized by family and neighbours as sinners and punished by God. The author notes a similar way of thinking in the Bible. He then points to a corrective to this attitude and way of thinking as given in the Book of Job. He then takes up the thinking and actions of Jesus who approached people who were suffering discrimination and opposed the way of thinking that attributed suffering to a divine curse. Drawing from this biblicval corrective, the author outlines a number of conclusions for pastoral work in the Church at this time.
