Abstract

The human propensity of openness to the transcendent can be seen as a fundamental predisposition. It is also a need. We encounter such a need in numerous traditions and cultures, including in postmodern societies. In the Hode Ilu ritual, the people of the Lewoingu domain of Eastern Flores (Kabupaten Flores Timur, NTT), express the inseparableness of cosmic reality (humans and their world) with transcendent reality. They experience nature as numinus with supernatural power. This power enables people to submit in awe and act out the heritage of the ancestors in an artistic performance expressing people’s relationship with others, nature, oneself, and with the Divine. This ritual performance is called “artistic” because it is a self expression of the community through ritual that emphasises a fundamental cosmic harmony which is both religious (transcendent) and ethical (in the here and now). When the tradition expresses a form of faith in the transcendent in ritual, then the sharing of human experiences, including relationships of people with the Transcendent, with the cosmos, with others, and with oneself, is not wrong. Also, in such ritual performances, we see a change of perspective and a change in human action regarding oneself, others, nature (with its powers), and with the Divine.

Abstract

This essay details how an “intuitive reading” of the Book of Ruth by a group of HIV carriers from Flores island, Indonesia, renewed their faith. The men caught the virus as economic migrants and then proceeded to give it to their wives on returning home sick. Rejected by family and by many members of the clergy, they have formed their own support group. Coming from the interior, most were not regular church goers before contacting the virus. Some years ago they began reading the Scriptures regularly once a month. They easily identified with Naomi and Ruth, with their failed migration, and with the tactics they were forced to use in order to survive on returning to Bethlehem. Members of the HIV support group, largely unsupported by the institutional Church or by their extended families, have discovered in reading the Bible together a liberating Word that has rekindled a deep personal faith in the God of compassion. Abstract

The domcratisation process which has been pursued by the Indonesian nation since the reformation era is now caught up in a procedural democracy without the wellbeing of the people or social justice. Proceduralism is the most basic criticism of liberal democracy by republicans and communitarians. From a communitarian perspective, the Pancasila state ideology as the normative base and collective identity of the Indonesian nation is able to offer a way out of the crisis of liberal democracy as practised in Indonesia. This essay attempts to show that it is not an effort to build a democratic order upon procedural ethics as is assumed by liberals, but rather the need to provide a substantial ethical foundation. This is the case as a democratic system is not filled with atomistic individuals but with social relationships. A democratic process always moves within a society shaped by social relationships and various complex processes for the formation of communities. Democracy is built upon a collective identity which is formal yet fragile. In the Indonesian context, the Pancasila is the collective expression the nation’s identity. As a collective identity, the Pancasila will never be complete, but will always be in a state of becoming rediscovering itself anew. In the final section, two methods are presented, namely the method of deliberative and agonistic democracy as a way proposed by contemporary political philosophy in overcoming conflicts in values in the face of pluralism. The Pancasila will become the collective identity which animates the people of Indonesia, only when it is open to a process of rational deliberation in the public sphere and is ready to be only one alternative in the midst of a competitive discourse. Abstract

To live as church in Asia is very demanding. Asia is known as the continent that gave birth to world religions whose followers in Asia live close to one another as neighbours. Each religion has a certain knowledge about the spiritual richness of her neighbours. Buddhists, for example, know that Christians are requested by the Lord to live a life of self-sacrifice. Christians are called by their master (Jesus) not to go forward fighting on behalf of the cross but to bear their cross on behalf of Jesus, not displaying a self-glorified life but practising self-denial. How is this command to be fulfilled in Asia by the Christian Church? This essay discusses the perspective of one of Asia’s most prominent theologians, Kosuke Koyama. Abstract

This essay looks at the dynamics between movement and institution, where each movement has to ripen in an institution and each institution has to be loosened again and again by new movements and inspirations. The author wishes to outline the dynamics between movement and institution by focusing on the credit union movement. At the beginning the development of the Church from a charismatic movement to an institution is outlined, which in time became extremely rigid. Then, the industrial revolution in the 19 century is looked at with its spirit of liberalism which produced the plight of the workers, which in turn triggered socialist movements which to overcome their plight by changing society radically. The appearance of the social teaching of the Church is seen as an effort to overcome the impasse of these two forces in the industrial revolution. On this background appeared the credit union movement, which embodied a number of the fundamental principles of the social teaching of the Church and is able to become an agent to loosen the structure of the Church hierarchy and support efforts in the country to hold back neo-liberalism and nurture democracy. In taking up the case of the largest credit union on Flores Island, the essay shows how the CU itself lies between the tension between movement and institutionalisation, while pointing out what needs to be done that this tension is maintained creatively, so that the CU is able to offer its spirit to the Church, and support democratisation in the country. Abstract

At base, modern culture is a culture that evolves through the frame of managing non-violent normative conflict. With the acknowledgement of religious freedom as a basic human right, the state and religion have been distinguished institutionally: politics and the state no longer deal with truth, but rather with peace between people of different persuasions. In reality, the institutional distinction between religion and politics/the state has been translated into a variety of different political arrangements, including within the Muslim world; the relationship between politics and religion cannot return to a single (Western) model as the norm. Therefore an analysis of the correlation between religion and politics assumes an appropriate understanding about the relationship between religion and culture, for an analysis of the ties between religion and culture will more or less indicate the ambivalence of religion: on the one hand religions have the potential to critique culture; but on the other hand, religions play a very problematic role: they can take up a sacred form and tend to make absolute areas that are in fact relative, including politics. Religion refers to absolute truth and can be (mis)used in the interests of a religious political elite who collaborate with the political elite of the state which may be far from the key message of the religion in question. Nevertheless, an awareness of the ambivalence of religion and politics encourages us to collaborate between religions and cultures in order to lessen human suffering. Abstract

The meaning of testimony and truth play an important role in both a legal/judicial discourse and a religious, particularly Christian discourse. I trace the history of testimony in legal discourse, beginning with the Hammurabi Code and its influence on ancient legal codes of Mesopotamia, including that found in the Pentateuch and continue with a discussion of multiple meanings of testimony in Augustine and French philosopher, Paul Ricœur that begin to lay the groundwork for bridging the two discourses. Contributions from feminist theology, particularly the validation of women’s experience as a source of theology, the role of immanence, and the shift from understandings of power as “power over” to “power with” as well as a transitional justice framework help make the case for dialog between these two discourses so they can enhance and strengthen each other. I include in sections of the article my own narrative to accent the theme of testimony. Keywords: Kesaksian, kebenaran, konteks hukum, pengadilan, konteks iman, hermeneutik.

Abstract

It is not so easy to explain, let alone suggest solutions to the problem of human trafficking as a concrete challenge to basic human rights. As with other social problems that have multiple causes, so too does human trafficking have many causes. In this article the author intends to elucidate one important aspect in human trafficking, the susceptibility of women to become victims. By placing human trafficking within the context of violence towards women, the author intends to propose a response to the question regarding why women are so susceptible as victims. Abstract

The Second Vatican Council is not just an important moment in the history of the Catholic Church, but for all Christian Churches. The conciliar moment was an integral part of verbum dei, a divine statement, which was not only spoken to the Catholic Church but to the entire Body of Christ, including the Protestant Churches. This essay highlights a number of issues regarding the impact the council has had on the renewal of Protestant Churches, in particular the Protestant Church in Timor (GMIT) including our understanding of the Church’s mission, ecumenical relations, the development of contextual theology, and also about the place and role of women in the Church. Kata-kata kunci: Konsili Vatikan II, misi Gereja, ekumenisme, teologi kontekstual, perempuan dalam Gereja.
