Abstract

Nowadays, machine translators like Google Translate are widely used by people. However, it does not mean that machine translators can always be relied on and produce good translations. This study aimed to analyze the translation quality of Instagram Machine Translation and Google Translate in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The objective of this research was to find out which machine translator is better between Instagram Machine Translation and Google Translate in translating Instagram captions. The data from the questionnaire were described in qualitative form. Nababan's translation quality instrument (2012) was adopted to assess the quality of the translation results from Google Translate and Instagram Machine Translation, where the translations were assessed with points one, two, or three according to the quality of the translation. The results of the analysis show that in three aspects, namely accuracy, acceptability, and readability, Google Translate is superior to Instagram Machine Translation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the intrinsic elements in terms of the nature of the poems La Mort Des Pauvres and Les Enfants Pauvres. Characterizing the similarities and differences between the two poems in terms of the essence of poetry serves to be the focus of this study. The method used is descriptive qualitative method using a semiotic structuralism approach. Data collection in this study was carried out in two ways according to the object to be studied. First, by collecting literary materials, in this case the poems of La Mort Des Pauvres and the poems of Les Enfants Pauvres which will be studied. After that, the listening method is used, a technique by letting the informant intuitively determine certain literary elements as aesthetic elements contained in poetry. The results of the research Poetry 'La mort des pauvres' has the theme of failure, and sees that only death can end all failure, gloom and suffering of the life of the poor, while the poem, 'Les enfants pauvres' with the theme of God and humanity shows that the poet is a religious person. Meanwhile, through the poem 'Les enfants pauvres' the poet wants to give messages and appeals to human beings who have a sense of humanity and are obliged to love, respect, and protect those around us.

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the students’ obstacles in listening comprehension during the TOEFL test. This present research aims (1) to find out what problems are faced by the students in listening comprehension and (2) to find the students’ strategies to overcome the problems faced in listening comprehension of English Education Department students of Universitas Muria Kudus. This qualitative case study is involving 53 participants who took the TOEFL course every semester in the academic year 2021/2022. The data was accumulated by using questionnaires and interviews. The result of the research showed that bad recording of the audio system during the listening section, the pace of the speakers when they speak, losing concentration, and the distraction from the non-technical side were the major obstacles in listening comprehension encountered by the students. This research also shows the strategies proposed by the students to enhance their listening skills. Despite the difficulty, the students agreed that listening comprehension skills are one of the most important skills that they had to learn as young learners because listening skills consist of language skills that they must master it. Knowing students’ obstacles to listening comprehension may help the teachers to propose and develop effective learning strategies, and also for the Lab UPT Bahasa to improve the quality of the audio system. The suggestion is made for marking the obstacles regarding how students could help themselves and all the parties could help their students to overcome the obstacles encountered by the students in listening comprehension.

Abstract

Social media may serve as an alternative and innovative medium in teaching and learning during this Covid-19 pandemic. This Study uses Reels Instagram to improve students’ motivation to learning English during the pandemic where learning resources are limited. With using a qualitative research approach especially, a case study. This study aimed to explore how the use of social media, especially Reels Instagram in teaching English for high school students. the data is collected by observing classroom learning, distributing questionnaire and interviewing some selected students. The findings show that social media, especially Reels Instagram serve to improve students’ motivation and interests in learning English. Besides that, some students felt happy and more active because the learning process is different, which made some students motivated to speak English. This study also has another result, where students have pronounce some words or sentences with good fluency. Academically, social media has become a vital tool for some people in daily communication and is also widely used in some schools in the education process, especially Instagram which is one of the most widely used social media platforms among youths and university students. Then, it is serve that social media was the most famous platform in social and education.

Abstract

The song is one of the exciting media in verbal communication. Songs as media for teaching pronunciation can help add vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar contained in the lyrics. This year, teaching and learning have changed online learning into face-to-face learning. Teachers are asked to prepare interesting learning strategies and be able to face challenges. This study aims to determine teachers’ perceptions on the implementation of using pop songs to teach pronunciation and challenge using pop songs to teach pronunciation to young learners. A case study qualitative approach is used in this study through observation and interviews. The research data were collected through observation during pronunciation teaching-learning activities and discussions with three English teachers. The finding shows that using English to teach pronunciation to young learners is very effective, builds self-confidence, and obtains good learning outcomes. In addition, the media used in learning pronunciation does not only use pop songs. Several media are used, including flashcards, drilling, audio, and video. However, the English song of those media still has advantages and disadvantages. The benefits of it include that students are easier to understand, enjoy more, create a pleasant atmosphere, and are easier to remember. Then, the factor becomes obstacles and weaknesses regarding minimal sources, incorrect pronunciation, and unclear writing. In addition, teachers’ perceptions of implementing pop songs to teach pronunciation are positive.

Abstract

 This study aimed (1) To find out the students' reading comprehension of Factual Report text before using the small group discussion technique for class XI TITL at SMKN 1 Padang. (2) To find out the reading comprehension of students on Factual Report text after using the small group discussion technique for class XI TITL at SMKN 1 Padang. (3) To find out whether or not there is a significant effect of using the small group discussion method for students' reading comprehension on reporting factual text for class XI TITL at SMKN 1 Padang. This research is Class Action Research. The techniques for collecting the data are documentation and testing. The subjects of this study were 29 students for class XI TITL-A. The results of the data have been 54% of students did not understand reading comprehension, with scores below the average. after the second cycle using small group discussion, all student scores increased above the average to 94%, which increased to 41% above the average. With the formation of small group discussions, students' reading comprehension has increased.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the teachers’ adaptation of using English textbook in senior high school during the covid-19 pandemic. Particularly, to find out which adaptation strategies are most frequently implemented by the teachers in adapting English textbook and what constrains do the teachers encounter in adapting the textbook. Mix-Method designed was employed to the study. The data were taken from 11 teachers from 5 senior high schools in Sulawesi Utara province through questionnaire. The findings of the study revealed that simplifying was the most popular strategy utilized by the teachers. The process of adding was the second most popular as extending used 38 times ( 21%) and expanding used 37 times ( 20%). Subtracting and replacing were not commonly used as the strategy. Most of the teachers ( 81,82%) found some constrains in adapting English textbook. The major constrains related to the issues of the students’ need, background and their language proficiency, and the internet connection problem which affects the adapted material presentation and the time teaching allotment.
