Abstract

This study examines the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into university library services from a humanities perspective, with a focus on critical literacy development. It analyzes how AI technologies—such as generative AI, recommendation systems, and interactive chatbots—support students' and librarians' abilities at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar to critically interpret, evaluate, and reflect on information. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis, this study draws on literature analysis, document analysis, and semi-structured interviews to identify practices, opportunities, and challenges in implementing AI within library services. The findings indicate that integrating AI with a humanistic approach supports the development of students' critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and evaluative skills while transforming information-seeking and utilization processes from passive activities into reflective learning experiences. The study highlights that AI serves not merely as a technological tool but also as a pedagogical medium that supports critical, ethical, and humanistic literacy. This study contributes by formulating strategies for integrating AI with critical literacy and humanities values while providing practical guidance for academic libraries in balancing technological innovation with educational ethics and reflective learning.

Abstract

The achievement of the vision and mission of study programs in higher education is closely associated with the quality of students' research. However, many students struggle to identify current, relevant research topics aligned with institutional strategic priorities, resulting in repetitive, saturated themes. This study develops and evaluates MYResearchMap, an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based student research mapping system that integrates bibliometric analysis and ChatGPT to map research trends and generate research topic recommendations aligned with the vision and mission of study programs. The study employed a mixed methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative techniques. Data were obtained from the metadata of students' scholarly works stored in the institutional repository, including titles, keywords, abstracts, and publication years, while students, lecturers, and librarians participated in the system evaluation. The research process comprised metadata collection, data cleaning, bibliometric analysis, exporting results in JSON format, integrating bibliometric analysis with ChatGPT to generate research recommendations, and visualizing the findings on the library website. The results demonstrate that MYResearchMap effectively maps student research trends, identifies both dominant and underexplored research topics, analyzes the alignment of research with the vision and mission of study programs, and generates more relevant research topic recommendations. Based on the survey, 97% of respondents reported that MYResearchMap helped them identify new research ideas, more than 90% considered the research trend mapping and topic distribution features beneficial, and all respondents agreed that the system was relevant to the vision and mission of their study programs. These findings indicate that MYResearchMap enhances research literacy and supports data-driven academic decision-making through research trend mapping and research topic recommendations aligned with the vision and mission of study programs.

Abstract

Students and lecturers use the digital environment to access various information sources to produce a range of academic outputs. This condition also encourages increasing acceptance of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI). Various academic outputs are currently produced with GAI's support, especially by students accustomed to using this technology in academic activities. This study aims to: (1) analyze the acceptance and use of Generative Artificial Intelligence by students, (2) develop a librarian competency model that supports academic integrity in managing academic outputs in the GAI era. This study uses a mixed-method approach implemented in two stages. First, the researcher distributed a survey to 376 participants to obtain an overview of students' acceptance and use of GAI. The second stage was carried out through observations and interviews with six informants who manage faculty libraries and the central library. In addition, a literature review was also conducted to identify librarian competencies relevant to the use of GAI in the academic environment. The study's results recommend a librarian competency model that includes the hard and soft skills needed to support the responsible use of GAI and aligns with the principles of academic integrity in managing academic outputs.
