Abstract

The implementation of innovations and technologies to decrease carbon emission is one of the main priorities that the University of Szeged is striving to achieve. Although, effective investments cannot be carried out without proper measurement systems in energy management and carbon emission monitoring. Understanding the importance of proper measurement, the University of Szeged has decided to calculate the whole carbon footprint of one of its main buildings, namely, the Study and Information Centre with the help of KÖVET association. The carbon evaluation uses data of 2019 and contains the direct and indirect carbon emission of building management, and of its employees’ and visitors’. This calculation will be the basis of further carbon reduction investments, protocols and events held for shaping the visitors’ and employees’ consciousness. In parallel with the evaluation, the University of Szeged has made some huge steps to decrease carbon emission factors. For instance, a newly installed visitor monitoring system regulates the electricity usage of ventilation in the most used areas of the Study and Information Centre based on the actual number of visitors present in the building. Furthermore, from April 2020, five electric cars substitute the most driven cars of the University in urban areas, rapidly decreasing the direct carbon emission in the city.

Abstract

To reflect Trent University’s academic leadership in environmental and indigenous studies, Trent has undertaken a collaborative campus stewardship and land-use planning process that prioritizes collection of Indigenous Traditional Knowledge (ITK) and engagement with the local First Nations. Trent’s Symons campus is rich in natural and cultural assets, with drumlins, wetlands, woodlands, meadows and farmland, and diverse flora and fauna. A primary goal of the campus plan is to conserve biological diversity, maintain ecological functions, and sustain ecosystem services across more than 560 hectares, whilst enabling campus expansion and joint benefit infrastructure projects to move forward efficiently and effectively. Trent’s experience in bringing ITK to the forefront of campus stewardship and land-use planning warrants critical examination to advance promising practices for conservation of biodiversity through a collaborative approach to planning

Abstract

The process of greening education is aimed to educate new generation with the holistic vision of the real world challenges, attitudes of responsibility and active social behavior as an agent of sustainability transformations. The methodological and didactic aspects of comprehensive greening of educational process discussed. It’s based on integration the competence and the whole school approaches, sustainable life style and green campus practices into sustainable university model. The preconditions for systemic and holistic integration of the sustainability principles into all fields of the university life are identified. Especial attention is paid to the recent experiences of the Ukrainian National Forestry University as the leading university in Ukraine in implementing the concept of greening higher education in Ukraine and member of new networking project “V4 Green Universities” supported by the Visegrad Fund.

Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide the guidance for the society moving to the sustainability pathways. University is a second home for staffs, students and future leaders and play a key role in achieving the SDGs. This study aims to assess the contribution of waste management in the achievement of the SDGs and their relevant targets. The assessment was performed using the contribution scoring matric that consists of five points and five scoring magnitudes. Using a case study of Dhurakij Pundit University (DPU) in Thailand, the results found that waste management is directly contributed to the SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities), SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production) and SDG 14 (Life below water). The analysis revealed that waste management has direct positive contributions on reducing the environment impact of cities (Target 11.6), enhancing resource use efficiency (Target 12.2), reducing food waste and losses (Target 12.3), reducing waste generation and promoting recycling and reuse (Target 12.5), and preventing and reducing marine pollution from land-based activities (Target 14.1). Waste management is not only having the positive impact of the SDGs but it also contributes to a healthy university during the COVID-19 pandemic and afterward.Keyword: Living Lab, Waste management, Sustainable Development Goals, UI GreenMetric

Abstract

Responding to global global challenges and sustainable development goals, the State University of Land Use Planning (LUP) is trying to modernize its scientific, educational and economic activities and introduce the best available technologies in the field of rational nature management. The University pursues an environmental policy, which should become a guarantor of sustainable environmentally oriented development of small regions in accordance with the SDG.Since 2018, LUP has been actively participating in events organized by the IU Green Metric community. The use of the "green" campus practices offered by IU Green Metric for an educational organization contributes to the dissemination of a culture of sustainable development in relation to all stakeholders. The significance of the project is connected with the need to strengthen the practical elements of training environmental specialists; assessment of the anthropogenic load on the unique campus territory under the influence of intensive development of the district's infrastructure; the need to improve the general ecological culture of the population, as well as to ensure the competitiveness of Russian universities.The paper shows the features of the implementation of measures related to the environmentally sustainable development of small regions within the framework of educational field and production practices in the conditions of COVID-19, the experience of conducting a comprehensive geoecological assessment of the Osetr river basin in the period 2015-2021, agroecological assessment with subsequent analysis of the state of agroecosystems based on the results of systematic regular observations for the rational use and protection of landscapes on the territory of the SEB "Gornoye", the need for the development of ecological educational tourism is noted in connection with the active development of the tourism industry, which is accompanied by an increase in the anthropogenic load on the environment. Keyword: geoecology, sustainable ecological development, field practices, ecological tourism, recreation

Abstract

It is estimated that the amount of water needed by Universitas Diponegoro will increase in the years to come. Several efforts are required to ensure the fulfillment of water needed while also considering its sustainability. There have been studies on water conservation at the industrial level. Still, limited studies have discussed this problem in Indonesia specifically at university level. Therefore, this study discusses the water conservation program at Universitas Diponegoro that might be used as a reference for other universities to address water supply problems. This study aims to discuss in depth water conservation efforts at Universitas Diponegoro. This study incorporates a descriptive-qualitative approach along with direct observation. Some programs on water supply have been implemented in Universitas Diponegoro such as conservation, treated water consumed, water recycling and water-efficiency. The existence of rainwater harvesting tanks (RWH), reservoirs, biopores, wastewater treatment plans (WWTPs) and ponds are among the efforts that have been applied at Universitas Diponegoro in order to conserve the water. To date, Universitas Diponegoro has successfully conserved more than 75% of the water, recycling about >50% of wastewater, installing about >50% of water-saving equipment, and has treated clean water into drinking water using reverse osmosis.Keyword: water, conservation, sustainability, campus

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a series of challenges to the academic community. Social distancing measures imposed the interruption of face-to-face activities besides the implementation of remote work and online classes. For safe and gradual return, the monitoring of individuals, quick detection of infection, contact tracing, and isolation of those infected became essential. In this sense, we developed strategies to face the pandemic at the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) - Brazil. A Telemedicine Program (TeleCovid) and the assemblage of a laboratory for SARS-CoV-2 molecular diagnosis (LabCovid) were essential measures for monitoring, preventing, and controlling outbreaks at the university. TeleCovid works with a team of students who guide and answer questions regarding COVID-19 and, when necessary, make the referral for online consultation with medical professionals. In the suspicion of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the doctor refers the patient for testing at LabCovid. LabCovid performs the sample collection using nasal swabs, followed by processing samples by the RT-qPCR method. We have placed all positive patients in isolation and tested their contacts. This approach meant that positive cases were identified early, thus avoiding outbreaks in different environments in face-to-face activities.Keyword: Covid-19; university, RT-qPCR

Abstract

Educating and preparing young graduates with an actionoriented education program is the prime requirement for any country. Therefore, the Sustainability course is designed to develop resource persons to fulfill the immediate country’s demand for adequate ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) skilled graduates. Currently Bangladesh is thriving for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by implementing the sustainability practices into the educational institutions. However, IUBAT is the pioneer for setting the sustainability course in undergraduate studies for any disciplines. Since today more than 10,000 undergrad students of the different disciplines have been taught the sustainability course where they engaged and practiced for any environmental degradation and resource conservation. Moreover, these students also spreading their sustainability knowledge and practices going to secondary and higher secondary school and colleges as a part of course assignments. Meanwhile IUBAT is a Green Campus, therefore students can practice for ESD with the appropriate green facilities. The aim of this paper is to disseminate the knowledge sharing that IUBAT leads introducing sustainability education at undergraduate level. This also highlights how IUBAT students are dedicated to participate and practicing for sustainable education for their lifelong learning which ultimately supports a nation’s dream of achieving SDGs by 2030.

Abstract

Recently we conducted a study to evaluate the existing solid waste management practices at Institute of Business Management (IoBM), Karachi which shows that the institute possesses best management practices related to solid waste collection, transport, segregation, recycling/reuse, and final disposal. Adequate number of color-coded bins have been laid at appropriate locations throughout the university campus. Institute has enough staff for waste management including waste collection, transportation, and disposal. Results of our study indicate that about 2,033 kg of solid waste/month (24.5 tons/annum) is generated from the IoBM campus. Out of the total, about 67.8 % is the recyclable and reusable plastic, paper, and metal waste while, the remaining (about 32%) is mostly organic waste generated from various facilities of the university. Economic analysis indicates that about 252,012 Pak rupees annually are earned from selling the recyclable and reusable inorganic solid waste. Study also indicate that about 500 kg of good quality compost per month can be prepared from the organic waste including food and yard waste that can be used for existing horticultural activities at the university. Abstract

The use of green campus practices by the State University of land use planning promotes a culture of sustainable development for all stakeholders. One of the forms of interaction was the scientific and educational base (SEB) Gornoye. The territory of the SEB "Gornoye" combines unique physical, geographical and agricultural features necessary for performing the educational, scientific, applied, research and production functions of the Department and is designed to ensure the sustainable development of natural territories.
