Abstract

The University of São Paulo (USP), through its Environmental Policy and under the coordination of the Superintendence of Environmental Management (SGA), has been promoting sustainability initiatives across its campuses. One of the most recent efforts is the USP Sustainability Program (USPSusten), which supports teaching, research, outreach, and shared management activities focused on socio-environmental sustainability, carried out by faculty and postdoctoral researchers. Highlighted projects include: (a) the Bioenergy and Biofertilizer Production Plant (BBPP), which uses organic waste from campus dining halls and green areas at the main campus (CUASO) to produce biogas and fertilizers; (b) a pilot plant for fueling hydrogen-powered buses, with a range of 240 km; (c) photovoltaic energy generation, with the potential to meet up to 27% of contracted electricity demand; and (d) greenhouse gas inventories, based on the GHG Protocol methodology. The BBPP, in operation since May 2021, processes organic waste to generate an average of 2,800 kWh/month, with an average output of 136 kWh per ton of waste. The hydrogen fuel project uses ethanol as a renewable energy source and aims to reduce CO₂eq emissions per capita by up to 72% compared to conventional combustion vehicles. Solar generation has shown economic feasibility for units consuming over 100 MWh/month. The emission inventory, structured through an action-research approach, involves pilot units within USP and highlights the need for improvements in the use of refrigerant gases in buildings and anesthetic gases in hospitals. These integrated efforts demonstrate the University’s commitment to conserving natural resources and enhancing quality of life.

Abstract

To mitigate climate change, transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources and expanding carbon sinks such as forests and mangroves are essential strategies. This study explores the integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) tree technology to achieve a net-zero emission concept within the mangrove conservation area at Science Techno Park (STP), Teluk Awur, Jepara, Indonesia. Mangroves play a critical role in carbon sequestration, yet limited land availability for conventional solar panels in such ecosystems necessitates innovative solutions. Solar PV trees, designed with a capacity of 50 Wp per unit and 10 Wp panels per leaf, are deployed to supply electricity for LED lighting (6 W) and mobile charging stations. A total of 70 units, yielding 3500 Wp, are planned for the mangrove boardwalk. Several factors influencing system performance, including non-optimal solar incidence angles, ambient temperature, and dust accumulation, are analyzed due to their potential to reduce efficiency and induce hotspot formation. The installation of a prototype banana-style solar PV tree results in a Net Present Cost (NPC) of USD 828 and a Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of USD 1.080/kWh. The findings demonstrate that solar PV trees offer a feasible and sustainable solution to meet local energy needs while enhancing renewable energy implementation in ecologically sensitive areas.

Abstract

The university is known as an agent of change, promoting sustainability to prepare future leaders with sustainability awareness. The demand for universities to offer solutions to sustainability issues is growing as universities' role in undertaking policies, programs, and actions towards sustainability becomes increasingly important. This study aims to explain the role of universities in developing countries, particularly private universities, in achieving sustainability. A case study approach is chosen to obtain more detailed information from the University of Surabaya, a private university in Indonesia. In-depth interviews, group discussions, observations, and document analysis have been undertaken to enrich the data. The study shows that private universities faced more complex considerations and challenges in achieving sustainable development. This study highlights that private universities tend to pursue their own sustainability strategies, primarily focused on securing financial funding and meeting mandatory regulatory requirements. According to this study, a sustainable university also needs top-level leadership commitment and an understanding of sustainability as an organizational culture.

Abstract

The Brantas Watershed is a critical hydrological zone in East Java, underpinning essential services such as raw water supply, irrigation, industrial operations, and the livelihood of surrounding communities. However, shifts in land utilization, deforestation, and escalating pollutant inputs have significantly impaired water flow regulation, degraded the integrity of the watershed, and compromised water quality particularly in upstream regions that are crucial for water provisioning. These challenges present substantial threats to the long-term viability of regional water resource management. In response, a collaborative initiative led by a consortium of East Java’s public universities aims to promote sustainable watershed governance. The program emphasizes the restoration of spring ecosystems, the reinforcement of native plant species, and the mobilization of local communities. Reforestation with indigenous vegetation has demonstrated positive impacts on both ecological resilience and watershed hydrology. Moreover, the adoption of inclusive governance models such as the pentahelix approach has fostered cross sector collaboration, ensuring shared responsibility and adaptive management. Integrating ecological restoration with multi actor institutional frameworks is vital to safeguarding water security and preserving the Brantas Watershed ecological function.

Abstract

This article examines the significance of Islamic moderation (wasaṭiyyah) in supporting Indonesia’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Employing a qualitative, interpretive design, the study integrates an integrative literature review of classical and contemporary scholarship with systematic document analysis and thematic content analysis of key institutional reports. Drawing upon classical Islamic scholarship, contemporary Indonesian religious thought, and empirical examples across Islamic institutions, the study demonstrates that moderation, embodied by organizations like Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, provides a culturally grounded framework for advancing inclusive development, contributing directly to SDGs related to poverty alleviation, quality education, gender equality, climate action, and peacebuilding. However, the study also identifies complex challenges, including political polarization, digital radicalization, institutional fragmentation, and resource disparities, that constrain its effectiveness. The article concludes that enhancing policy coordination, expanding religious literacy, and empowering community leaders are essential for maximizing moderation’s role in Indonesia’s pursuit of the SDGs. Future research should empirically quantify the impact of specific faith-based initiatives on SDG indicators and comparatively analyze the Indonesian model of moderation with other Muslim-majority contexts to assess its broader applicability.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the relationship of maternal characteristics and feeding practices on the stunting incidence in toddlers. It was conducted using a retrospective observational method with a case-control design. A quantitative and qualitative approach was also implemented. The population used was toddlers aged 1-3 years in West Dompu Public Health Center. Furthermore, purposive sampling was used to select the 46 respondents in each group. Data were collected using questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and observations. Meanwhile, the analysis was conducted through the univariate, bivariate, multivariate, and qualitative methods. The results of the qualitative analysis showed that the eating habits of some of the toddlers could lead to stunting. These habits were the consumption of less diverse food types, intake of food that do not meet nutritional standards, and the belief in certain foods. Inappropriate parenting and irregular eating patterns were also found to increase the incidence of stunting. However, inadequate energy was the most dominant causative factor.

Abstract

This study investigates the pivotal role of community behavior in adopting renewable energy as a pathway toward achieving carbon neutrality in island communities. Employing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the research examines how critical dimensions adaptive attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intention influence individual and collective actions for sustainable energy transitions. The findings reveal that adaptive attitude (H1) significantly impacts subjective norms (p = 0.015), suggesting that positive perceptions of renewable energy benefits, such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions and potential economic opportunities, foster widespread community support. This indicates that when individuals view renewable energy favorably, they contribute to shaping societal norms that prioritize sustainable energy adoption. Subjective norms (H2) exert a strong influence on perceived behavioral control (p < 0.001), underscoring the importance of social networks and cultural dynamics in mobilizing community participation. Furthermore, adaptive attitude (H3) directly affects intention (p = 0.064), indicating that personal beliefs and awareness about the advantages of renewable energy drive individuals' readiness to engage in sustainable practices. The results also show that subjective norms (H4) play a critical role in shaping intention (p < 0.001), emphasizing the power of social influence, including peer encouragement and collective advocacy, in motivating communities to take action. This demonstrates that societal endorsement of renewable energy creates a positive feedback loop that strengthens individuals’ intentions to act. While perceived behavioral control (H5) did not have a direct effect on intention, it remains an essential factor in addressing barriers. Finally, the study finds that intention (H6) serves as a direct driver of tangible support for renewable energy projects (p < 0.001), bridging motivation and concrete actions such as the installation of solar panels, adoption of wind energy systems, and participation in local energy cooperatives.

Abstract

The Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) has been instrumental in shaping sustainability education through research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community-driven initiatives. Emerging from an effort to integrate research with real-world development challenges, ESDU fosters partnerships and promotes an applied, participatory approach to learning within and beyond the campus walls. ESDU with other AUB partners has fostered the development of pioneering undergraduate and graduate programs addressing environmental sustainability and management, rural community development, sustainable agriculture, food production, and food security.  In addition to these academic programs that prepare university students to address pressing sustainability challenges through innovative and practical solutions, the ESDU serves as the community engagement arm of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences  (FAFS) with a major role in capacity building, continuing education and outreach to the community at large with tailored educational and training tools for promoting socioeconomic as well as environmental sustainability at the University and beyond. The ESDU has established a campus-based sustainability show-case, The Urban Oasis; combining top of the line smart technology with traditional material and design it serves as community hub, living-lab in sustainability and an engagement and educational. The role of the ESDU complements the University’s effort towards a more sustainable management of the Institution including collaboration for campus greening and improved waste management. The AUB’s overall sustainability efforts are documented and reported by the Environmental Health, Safety, and Risk Management (EHSRM) department, contributing alongside other university departments to advance institutional sustainability goals).

Abstract

This research deliberates the design and implementation of a sustainability leadership framework in a higher education institution. Recognizing the critical role HEIs play in fostering sustainable development, the research aims to identify effective leadership initiatives and strategies that promote environmental, social, and economic sustainability on campus. The research is methodologically grounded in a qualitative case study approach, as the data were collected through developed projects and documents’ analysis and designed actions to assess the current state of sustainability initiatives and leadership practices at Gulf University, Bahrain. Based on the findings, a comprehensive framework emphasizing the design process, strategic leadership, stakeholder engagement, capacity building, design decisions, infrastructure settings and integrated governance is subjected. The proposed framework is aimed at examining a range of challenges and opportunities about how institutional leaders and HEIs can embed sustainability into their core missions, fostering a culture of responsible innovation, and enabling measurable progress toward sustainability goals. The case study reflects the results as valuable insights for policymakers, academic leaders, and sustainability practitioners seeking to advance sustainable practices within higher education settings.
