Abstract

Since 2013, Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) has utilized various global and national sustainability assessment tools, including STARS by AASHE, UI Green Metrics, Q.S. Sustainability, and THE Impact Ranking. These tools have been pivotal in diagnosing institutional strengths and weaknesses, identifying opportunities for improvement, and integrating strategic actions into our policies and institutional plans. This paper explores the comparative effectiveness of these diverse sustainability evaluation tools and analyzes their impact on decision-making processes at USFQ. It explores how these assessments have informed our sustainability policies and strategies over the years, leading to significant improvements within our institution. Additionally, the paper presents successful case studies from USFQ where these tools have directly influenced the implementation of various projects. The insights provided will demonstrate how rigorous assessments can pave the way for meaningful institutional enhancements, offering a valuable resource for academic institutions worldwide to foster a culture of sustainability and make informed decisions that drive institutional change towards greater sustainability.

Abstract

The primary objective of the research was to calculate the carbon footprint resulting from the substantive activities of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico between the years 2021 and 2022, to propose strategies for carbon footprint neutralization. The scientific and methodological contribution of this research can serve as a model for Mexican universities that wish to measure their carbon footprint. The research encompasses several sections. The first section delineates the issues pertinent to this study, along with the primary objective and specific goals. The subsequent section defines the conceptual framework employed. Regarding the state of the art of this research, it was necessary to identify that it is doing in this regard in other latitudes, which is why an analysis is presented of some of the universities in Europe and Latin America that have added work and effort to carry out studies on their greenhouse gases emissions generated and, in some cases, have achieved quantify their ecological or carbon footprint. The proposed methodology takes up the guidelines of the ISO 14064-1:2019 standard and presents eleven steps. The results of the carbon footprint of the UAEMéx in 2021 were 14,077,136.90 kg of CO2e, and considering that the total of the university community at that time was 105,249 members, the amount per capita was 133.75 kg of CO2e/person/year. On the other hand, for the year 2022, the carbon footprint was 28,019,621.33 kg of CO2e, and the per capita of 261.30 kg of CO2e/person/year, considering that the university community was cemented to 107,231 members. Based on the results obtained, neutralization strategies were developed, consisting of a list of activities aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, the conclusions of this research are presented.

Abstract

Adopting sustainable consumption behaviors is imperative for achieving better sustainable production and consumption patterns (SDG12). Individuals play a crucial role in this goal as both part of the problem and the solution. Consequently, various actors aim to address the factors influencing individuals' adoption of these behaviors. Among these actors, higher education institutions play a unique role due to their opportunity to guide future generations through Education for Sustainable Consumption (ESC) towards sustainable values, attitudes, competencies, and behaviors. Understanding the drivers and barriers individuals face toward sustainable consumption is crucial for actively pursuing sustainability. However, few efforts have addressed this problem based on the actual experiences of individuals, and even fewer have focused on students as individuals who will hopefully lead organizations with a sustainability mindset. This research aims to fill this gap by linking a pedagogical strategy of active learning to the adoption of sustainable behaviors. Using a qualitative approach, we analyzed the experiences that students reported over three academic semesters in an online forum. The findings reveal that barriers to adopting sustainable behaviors are mostly contextual, while internal factors motivate people to advance toward this type of practice. From this methodological approach, emergent factors provide insights that could guide future policies and strategies to achieve better sustainable consumption patterns.

Abstract

This paper conducts a comparative analysis of sustainability-focused educational initiatives at Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University of Turkmenistan (ETUT) alongside other young universities, including Duke Kunshan University (China), Ashoka University (India), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST, Saudi Arabia). The study examines how these institutions integrate sustainability into their curricula, student engagement, and community outreach efforts, emphasizing the role of emerging universities in advancing sustainability education. Through an in-depth case study of ETUT and a comparative review of global trends, the research highlights innovative approaches aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This paper illustrates how young universities leverage their agility to embed sustainability into their operations, curricula, and community interactions, preparing students to address pressing environmental and social challenges in the 21st century.

Abstract

The Brazilian Network of Higher Education Institutions for Sustainable Development – colloquially known as UniSustentável – is a program of education, research, extension, entrepreneurship, and innovation implemented at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS). The Network aims to carry on an environment of cooperation, collaboration, exchange, and communication among member Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) with the purpose of building a more sustainable society, educating people and fostering good practice in sustainability adoption. The Network will be preferably composed of Brazilian HEIs and operates on a non-profit basis, without affiliations to political parties or religious connotations. The coordination of the Network is carried out by an elected Coordinator and Coordinator-adjunct on a biennial basis, with administrative support provided by an administrative committee and a general assembly. UniSustentável is affiliated to the Alliance of Ibero-American Networks of Universities for Sustainability and the Environment (ARIUSA). Founded in September 2023 with 3 member HEIs, as of April 2024, it has expanded to include 20 HEIs located in all 5 Brazilian regions. The network's activities are organized into working groups, each overseen by a responsible HEI and comprised of staff, faculty, and students from member HEIs, as well as the potential involvement of invited experts. Despite its short existence, UniSustentável has already demonstrated that it is possible to work towards sustainability through the collaboration of HEIs.

This study explores the potential of sustainable energy solutions to address global energy challenges and mitigate climate change. Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University (ETUT) serves as a case study, displaying its innovative approaches to energy efficiency, waste management, and renewable energy production. The university's implementation of energy-saving devices, smart building automation systems, and LED lighting demonstrates a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable practices. Additionally, the study investigates the conversion of plastic waste into liquid fuel and the production of bioethanol from cotton stalks as potential solutions for waste management and renewable energy generation. Further, the research explores the deposition of thin film bismuth vanadium tetraoxide for hydrogen production, highlighting its potential as a clean energy source. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of sustainable energy solutions and the role of academic institutions in driving innovation and promoting a greener future.

Abstract

Addressing climate change has become a top priority for universities worldwide. This paper examines Raden Intan State Islamic University’s initiatives to confront climate change through its Eco-Campus program. In Indonesia, a country highly vulnerable to climate change, UIN Raden Intan Lampung recognizes its responsibility in promoting sustainability and reducing environmental impacts. Using a qualitative approach, this case study explores the university's comprehensive strategies, which include institutional policies and grassroots efforts. The campus focuses on reducing carbon emissions, adopting renewable energy, and enhancing climate resilience. Key initiatives include maintaining large green spaces that lower temperatures and absorb carbon dioxide, using energy-saving devices like LED lights, and installing solar panels to minimize the carbon footprint. In waste management, the university turns organic waste into compost and repurposes food waste to feed larvae, which are then processed into animal feed. Water conservation efforts are supported by artificial ponds, ensuring a reliable water supply and maintaining greenery during dry seasons. The university also promotes sustainable transportation by encouraging bicycle use and limiting vehicle parking to reduce emissions. Overall, UIN Raden Intan Lampung exemplifies how a university can integrate sustainability into campus life, serving as a model for climate change mitigation efforts.

Abstract

The present study examined students’ knowledge and attitudes in behavior about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at Lagos State University, Lagos State, Nigeria. The data for the study were extracted and analyzed from the 353 copies of structured questionnaires that were self-administered to students across the ten (10) faculties. Data was analyzed using simple percentages, tables, One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and logistic regression analysis. Results showed that a good percentage (77.1%) of the respondents had knowledge of and were aware of the term SDGs. Social media (33.1%), lectures (14.4%), and television (12.5%) were the prominent sources of SDGs awareness by the respondents who claimed they were aware of the term SDGs. The level of awareness of the various SDGs also varied among the students with most students being aware of 14 of the SDGs (77%), while the remaining (23%) claimed they were not familiar with three goals (9, 12, and 17). The result of the awareness further showed that among the SDGs they claimed they were aware of (91%) were for SDG 1 (NO POVERTY), while, the percentage of the level of awareness for the remaining varied from 1.1% to 13.5%. The students displayed behavioral support toward the actualization of sustainable development goals by encouraging a sustainable energy approach, encouraging sustainable consumption patterns, and discouraging biodiversity loss through their behaviors. Based on these findings, it is strongly recommended that the universities in Nigeria revise and incorporate the teaching of the SDGs into their academic curricula. This step will afford the students adequate knowledge about the UN SDGs and how these can be achieved and sustained.

Abstract

The stormwater harvesting (SWH) project at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogotá) began in 2007, initiated by the Water and Environmental Engineering research group (Ciencia e Ingeniería del Agua y el Ambiente), as part of PUJB's Environmental Management Plan and in collaboration with the University's Office of Physical Resources. This process included assessments of water supply and demand, rainwater quality, and financial and construction considerations. The system—a constructed wetland/regulation tank (CWRT)—collects rainwater runoff from the university's parking building (3,776 m²), the soccer field, and surrounding areas (14,816 m²). Beyond its hydrological performance, especially during periods of water scarcity, the system also functions as a full-scale laboratory to study biodiversity and ecological impacts in hydrological and hydraulic processes. The monitoring program, focused on changes in rainwater quantity and quality, has inspired several master's and doctoral research projects. These studies explore critical topics in urban hydrology, including stormwater harvesting, urban sediment management, real-time decision-making systems, and environmental and human health. This paper outlines the development of the stormwater harvesting system, shares the main findings from research projects, and discusses ongoing projects.

Abstract

Unicamp is making progress in making its energy consumption more efficient through partnerships with companies in the electricity sector and projects carried out within the scope of the Coordination of Sustainability. Despite already being able to report a reduction of around 10% in energy consumption during the last four years, it is important for Unicamp to be able to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable operation. The Energy Efficiency Project aims to reduce the university's electricity consumption by 30% by 2030. For this purpose, it is divided into three sub projects aimed at saving energy, modernizing, and improving buildings and the university's sustainability indicators. The Unicamp 100% Led subproject foresees the replacement of conventional lamps by 18W LED tube lamps. The Sustainability in the Air subproject aims to replace old air conditioning equipment with efficient equipment. And the + Photovoltaic subproject aims to increase the generation of photovoltaic energy on the roofs of university buildings. The main goal of this is to report the implementation process of this project, its challenges, results achieved and indicators. The result of this explanation can be used as an example so that other universities can advance in the sustainable management of electric energy.
