Abstract

This paper discusses about connectivity algorithm in simple graphs. The algorithm has three stages, namely, adjacent vertices search, adjacent vertices investigation and component investigation. The aim of connectivity algorithm is to check whether a graph is connected or disconnected with the scope set. There are three sets which are used in this algorithm, namely, vertex, edge and adjacent vertices sets. The simple graph is connected if the graph has only one component or if the number of adjacent vertices elements is equal to the number of vertices. Otherwise, if the simple graph has more than one component or if the number of adjacent vertices elements is not equal to the number of vertices then the algorithm will conclude that the graph is disconnected.

Abstract

Chromolaena odorata or Tekelan has been used traditionally to cope with diabetes mellitus, but the scientific evidence as antidiabetic agent has not been previously reported. Therefore, it is necessary to test the antidiabetic activity using ethanol extract of the tekelan leaves in male mice induced by alloxan. Mice were induced intravenously by alloxan dose of 55 mg/kg bw. After 7 days, mice were diabetic ( KGD 200 mg/dL ) and were grouped into 6 groups: negative control group (only treated with CMC - Na) , positive control group (glibenclamide 0.45 mg/kg bw) and the 4 other groups were given ethanol extract of Tekelan leaves at doses of 5 , 25 , 125 and 250 mg/kg bw. Dosage administered for 28 days and blood glucose levels was checked every 7 days using a glucotest. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variation at 95% confidence level. Ethanol extract of tekelan’s leaves  at doses of 5 , 25 , 125 and 250 mg/kg bw can lower blood levels  from day 7 to day 28 and was significantly different compared to the negative control group ( p 0.05). Ethanol extract of tekelan’s leaves at doses of 5 , 25 , 125 and 250 mg/kg bw showed antidiabetic activity in alloxan-induced mice.

Abstract

N-hexane extracts of the bark from black plum (Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels) showed activity against Salmonella typhi. Meanwhile, the result showed that N-hexane was not able to inhibit the growth of  Candida sp. The research was done at Microbiology laboratory, Biology Department Faculty of Mathematics and Science,  Syiah Kuala University. The barks of black plum were collected from Aceh Besar District. The extraction method for black plum used maceration with N-hexane and than concentrated in rotary evaporator. The disc diffusion method used to screen the antimicrobial activity with 20 %, 30 %, 40 % dan 50 % concentration.

Abstract

The effect of Ge content on the optical and electrical properties of a-SiGe:H thin films deposited by HWC-PECVD had been investigated. The a-SiGe:H films ware grown on corning glass 7059 substrate using 10% diluted mixture of GeH4 and SiH4 gases, respectively. The GeH4 gas flow rate was varied from 2.5 – 12.5 sccm, while the flow rate of SiH4 was kept constant at 70 sccm. The results showed that the deposition rate of a-SiGe:H thin films increased by  increasing of GeH4 gas flow rate. In addition, the Ge content in the film increased and  the optical band gap decreased. The dark conductivity of a-SiGe:H films were relatively constant, whereas the photo conductivity decreased with increasing of Ge content.

Abstract

The study of biological activity from n-hexane extract of leaves’ Cassia alata had been done against Candida albicans as bioindicator. Dried leaves of C. alata (850 g) were macerated into n-hexane to obtain a dark green crude extract (31.79 g). The n-hexane crude extract was then subjected to vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) and eluted with n-hexane and ethyl acetate to give 4 sub-fractions, namely fraction A (7.7251 g), fraction B (1.9419 g), fraction C (1.3565 g) and fraction D (1.4737 g) respectively. Based on phytochemical analysis, both nhexane crude extract and chromatographic sub-fractions contained steroids as their secondary metabolite constituent. The antifungal activity was tested against C. albicans using the agar-disc diffusion method with three different concentrations (10, 30 and 50%). Fraction D showed medium antifungal activity at 10.6, 11.3 and 12.6 of diameter-inhibition zones (mm) respectively.

Abstract

This study was aimed to develop an algorithm based on the optical properties of some selected vegetables which can be used to evaluate shelf- life of some selected vegetables using multispectral scattering method. Multispectral algorithm will be developed to correlate light backscattering radiation of a vegetable with the level of shelf life conditions. The partial least square (PLS) regression models using three wavelengths were used to estimate the shelf life changes of the vegetable samples. The results showed that the developed multispectral scattering algorithms can be used to evaluate the shelf life changes of Chinese cabbage, carrot, chili, and cucumber using wavelengths at 880, 890, and 950 nm as the light sources respectively.  The calibration and validation processes of the algorithm produced good accuracy measurements as represented by high R2 values and low Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). For the Chinese cabbage and the carrot samples, the algorithm was not effective to predict the changes of the shelf life because the responses was kept increasing even after the samples were dried and deteriorated. Also, the algorithms cannot be used to evaluate the shelf life changes of the onion because the calibration and validation processes produced low accuracy of measurements.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effect of ethanol extract of curry leaves (Murraya koenigii L.) on blood glucose levels in alloxan diabetic mice (Mus musculus). The diabetic conditions were made by giving alloxan 75 mg/kg body weight (BW) and the hypoglycemic effects of extract of curry leaves given with various doses.   This study used 24 male mice strain Balb/c in four groups of treatment with six replications, namely the negative control group, the ethanol extract of curry leaf tree 50% mL/10g body weight group, 70% mL/10g body weight group and 90% mL/10g body weight group. The treatment was given orally by using a gastric sonde for 14 days. Blood samples were taken through the sinus caudalis using a scissors. Blood glucose level was measured at 1st , the 8th and the 24th of treatment using blood glucose test strips and Nesco® Multicheck apparatus. Blood glucose data were analyzed by one way ANOVA (Analysis of Variants) and followed by Tuckey test at significance level of 5%. The result showed that treatment of ethanol extract of curry leaves (Murraya koenigii) at various doses significantly affected the decrease on blood glucose levels of mice (Mus musculus) alloxan diabetic.
