Abstract

Antioxidant activity test for the extract of ethyl acetate nutmeg stem bark (Myristica fragrans Houtt) was carried out using 2,2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazil (DPPH). The test results of antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate nutmeg stem bark extract with DPPH method at a concentration of 25 ppm, 50 ppm and 100 ppm obtained IC50 value = 68.14 ppm with IC50 value of vitamin C (as positive control) 3.657 ppm. The results of column chromatographic separation of ethyl acetate nutmeg stem bark extract obtained 5 combined fractions namely MFEK 1, MFEK 2, MFEK 3, MFEK 4 and MFEK 5. The test results of the fraction antioxidant activity in a good category were the MFEK 1 fraction. The MFEK 2 fraction to MFEK 5 showed an antioxidant activity lower than compared  to the ethyl acetate extract. This shows that the ethyl acetate nutmeg stem bark extract has a better inhibitory activity, because there are several active compounds contained in the extract which can inhibit free radicals, so the IC50 value of the extract is better than the fractions.

Abstract

The use of antibiotics is an alternative to reduce disease incidence and is used to increase egg-laying hens. This study aims to detect the presence of antibiotic resistance to resistance coding genes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. The cloacal swab samples were collected randomly as many 66 samples from several egg-laying hens farms in Cianjur Regency, West Java. The collected isolates were examined bacteriologically. The results of the antibiotic sensitivity test of 8 samples (12.1%) of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed the resistance level of antibiotics class tetracycline (tetracycline50%, oxytetracycline75%, and doxycycline50%), fluoroquinolone (enrofloxacin 12.5%), and phenicol (chloramphenicol 12.5%). Pseudomonas aeruginosa was resistant to tetracyclines, oxytetracyclines, doxycycline, enrofloxacin and is sensitive to chloramphenicol. The detection of resistance coding genes showed the genes amount of tetA (62.5%) and qnrS (75%). Efforts to determine the level of resistance and use of antibiotics in farms need regular surveillance and monitoring to ensure the wise use of antibiotics.

Abstract

Abstract. A research on analyzing the phytochemical content in Volvariella volvacea (straw mushroom) extract from a local cultivation in Aceh has been conducted. Straw mushroom is potentially a medicine ingredient. This study aims to examine the secondary metabolite compounds in the methanol extract of straw mushroom. The extraction of the secondary metabolite compounds was undertaken by using the maceration method with methanol solvent. Phytochemical test was conducted qualitatively by using the meyer’s reagent, bouchardat, dragendrof, FeCl3, HCl 0.1 M, HCl 2N and Lieberman – bouchardat. Phytochemical analysis was carried out on flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, tannins and terpenoids. The phytochemical analysis’ result shows that the straw mushroom extract contains alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and saponins.Keywords: straw mushroom, methanol extract, maceration method, phytochemical screening

Abstract

Nyamplung oil originated from Ujong Pancu, Aceh Besar is one of the vegetable oil sources which is not fully utilized yet. The extraction of nyamplung oil is done using soxhletation with n-hexane solvent; during this process, the oils produced is at the 55.55% levels. The product is in the form of yellowish green liquid with the density of 0.88gr/ml. The nyamplung oil extract has the iodine number of iod 83.53 mg iod/g and hydroxyl number of  64.292 mg KOH/gram which can be utilized as the raw material in making polyurethane membrane. Polyurethane membrane is synthesized by reacting fatty acids from nyamplung seed oil with hexamethylene-1.6-diisocyanate (HDMI). The ration of the oil towards HDMI is variated as, 5:1;5:3;5:5;5:7;5:9 v/w. The membrane has a composition of  5:7 v/w  with 90-100 oC polymerization temperatures and  160oC curring temperature for 8 hours is hard, homogenous and quite elastic with a transparent brown colour.

Abstract

In the previous study, we examined the effect of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on beneficial soil fungus including Trichoderma harzianum (T22), and pathogenic soil-borne fungus, Rhizoctonia solani (AG3-PT). The result exhibited that T. harzianum (T22) is tolerance towards AgNPs. On the other hand, the pathogenic fungi, R.solani (AG3-PT), is more sensitive to AgNPs. T. harzianum is well known as biocontrol agent to suppress R. solani. Therefore, in this study we investigated the combination of T. harzianum (T22) and AgNPs at low concentration to control two strains of R. solani (AG3-PT and AG2-1). The effect of AgNPs at two different levels (20 mg L-1 and 50 mg L-1) was examined over the growth of the two strains of R. solani and T. harzianum (T22) using dual culture technique. The results shows that this combination have a potential to reduce colony growth of R. solani (AG2-1) at higher AgNPs concentration. However, it was not the case for R. solani (AG3-PT). It can be concluded that AgNPs toxicity depend on several factors including species strain and the size of AgNPs particle.

Abstract

Janeng starch (Dioscorea Alata) and rice straws are developed to be used as adsorbents in dry washing method to purify crude biodiesel. In this study, we evaluate the potential of rice straw and janeng starch as natural adsorbents in the purification of biodiesel that replace the role of water in absorbing contaminants from biodiesel. The SEM characterization results show that the starch adsorbent and rice straw has an open and porous surface and is evenly distributed for janeng starch. Both adsorbents, either the janeng starch or rice straw, can be applied for the purification of biodiesel. The quality of biodiesel is influenced by the amount of adsorbents used in biodiesel purification. The effectiveness of the adsorbent is shown by the decrease in free fatty acids, alkali numbers, soap numbers and turbidity levels in biodiesel. The concentration of free fatty acid oil in crude biodiesel before the purification step was 0.769 mg-KOH/g, then decreased to 0.128 mg-KOH/g after the adsorption. This acid value had been very low and met the Indonesian quality national standard for biodiesel spesically 0.50 mg-KOH/g. Either janeng starch or rice straw adsorbent was able to reduce the soap content of potassium oleate to level 53.33 ppm from the initial content of 106.67 ppm. These two natural adsorbents can be the alternative adsorbents in the purification of biodiesel that employs dry washing method.

Abstract

The dynamics of the spring-pendulum system with two degrees of freedom were studied. The motion of this system is restricted to be in a vertical plane so that the chosen generalized coordinates are the increased length of the spring and the swing angle of pendulum . Hamiltonian of the system is obtained from the Legendre transformation of Lagrangian. Hamiltons equation yields four differential equations that represent the dynamic of the system. The obtained results were visualized in configuration space and phase space trajectories. It is shown that generally the greater the initial swing angle, the more complex pattern will occur followed by the appearance of chaotic phenomena.

Abstract

The use of medicinal plants by local communities is an ethnobotany study that links the culture of the community with the resources of plants that are around it. A study on the utilization of medicinal plants in the Hutan Pinus Jantho Nature Reserve was conducted with the aim of obtaining information about the types of medicinal plants used by local communities around Hutan Pinus Jantho Nature Reserve. This study applies the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method for interviews conducted by Purposive Sampling. The parameters measured are; parts of medicinal plants used, method of processing, method of use, and location of the collection. According to interview, it found about 10 species of Asteraceae those have medical potential, 3 of them already use by the local community of CAHPJ, these are Blumea balsamifera L., Chromolaena odorata L., and Tagetes erecta L., these species could cure the wound, heal the cold, fever, stomachache and other diseases.

Abstract

A study on the adsorption characteristic of Iron onto Poly[eugenol-co-(divinyl benzene)] (EDVB) from aqueous solution has been conducted. EDVB was produced and characterized by using FTIR spectroscopy. The adsorption was studied by a batch method by considering the factors affecting the adsorption such as initial metal ion concentration, adsorption selectivity, and mechanism of adsorption using a sequential desorption method. The adsorption of Iron onto EDVB followed a pseudo-2 order kinetics model with the rate constant of 0,144 L2 mmol-1 min-1. The adsorption isotherm was studied with Tempkin, Langmuir and Freundlich models. The adsorption capacity (Qmax) obtained by Langmuir isotherms was 250mg.L-1 while the equilibrium value was 0.8 Lmg-1. A competitive adsorption study showed that EDVB is adsorbed selectively towards Iron rather than Chromium, Coppers and Cadmium ions. Abstract

Adobe Flash is a software that is used to build an interactive contents that can be attached in other things, such as presentations, games and e-learning. The Eulerian Circuit Search Instructional Media is one of examples in using Adobe Flash in building an interactive instructional media to solve graph theory problems. Visually, Adobe Flash is better than other programming software in general and it is the most suitable one for graph theory, as it uses graphics and visuals to solve problems. The weakness of Adobe Flash is when doing large scale calculations; such as when testing algorithms to find Eulerian circuits. Then an idea came about to complete the large scale calculations in Adobe Flash, which is commonly known as script time limit, with using other methodologies by changing script time limit on the settings, algorithms, partition the processes, and utulize the timers within the objects in the actionscript that handles the search algorithms of searching Eulerian circuit.
