Abstract

This study aims to describe the activities of Mandarin Language Education Study Program students at State University of Malang in the application of Brainwriting techniques to train expository essay writing skills and describe student responses to the application of Brainwriting techniques. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The data sources in this study were 36 students of the Mandarin Language Education Study Program class of 2022 offering B. Based on the results of the research, the Brainwriting technique can help students find ideas in writing expository essays, based on ideas that have been written on group worksheets by producing vocabulary that is used as a guide in developing expository essays. The theme of this expository essay is可爱的熊猫 [kě'ài de xióngmāo](cute panda) with the title of expository essay长颈鹿 [Chángjǐnglù](giraffe). However, all groups were unable to write 500-1000 字, because based on the students' responses, the time for writing expository essays was too short at 30 minutes and the hanzi strokes in the concluding structure were too many.

Abstract

Grammar is the science of sentence construction. There are significant differences between Indonesian grammar and Chinese grammar in sentence structure. Students often face difficulties in composing speech texts according to Chinese grammar rules. This study aims to identify the forms of grammatical errors in Chinese speech texts and describe the factors that cause these errors made by students of class XI IBB SMA Nurul Jadid. This research method is descriptive qualitative with instruments in the form of speech text documents from 20 students. The results showed several forms of grammatical errors that often occur, such as the placement of adverbs of place, verbs, vocabulary usage, and punctuation. Factors causing these errors include lack of practice, limited mastery of vocabulary, and the habit of using Indonesian order patterns.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to design E-Pocket Book HSK 3 learning media for grade XI students of Language and Culture Program (IBB) at Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo Senior High School. This learning media was developed to facilitate the learning process of Chinese, especially to prepare students for the HSK 3 examination, which is abbreviated from (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi). The development process used the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) which consists of five main stages. This research uses qualitative data as the type of data collected, which is collected through closed and open questionnaire sheets as data collection instruments. The E-Pocket Book HSK 3 media has obtained validation from media experts and material experts, and has been tested on twenty-one XI IBB class students and Chinese language teachers at Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo Senior High School. According to the results obtained, it can be concluded that the HSK 3 E-Pocket Book is effective in increasing students' learning motivation and making it easier for them to prepare for the HSK 3 exam. In addition, this media also facilitates students to access materials independently

Abstract

This study explores how non-native Mandarin learners apply situated learning theory in authentic contexts through interactions with native speakers in the Malaysian Chinese community. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, 30 students from a beginner-level Chinese class at a public university were selected, and their recorded conversations and transcribed texts were analyzed. The research is framed within Lave & Wenger's (1991) situated learning theory and Ellis's (2009) task-based teaching framework. Key findings include: (1) Task-based learning enhances linguistic authenticity; (2) Communicative tasks facilitate social interaction; (3) The constructivist approach reduces reliance on traditional instruction. These findings provide valuable pedagogical insights for Mandarin instructors, contributing to improvements in teaching methodologies, task design, and curriculum development, ultimately increasing overall teaching effectiveness.

Abstract

This classroom-based study investigates how structured multimodal writing tasks can support beginner learners of Chinese. Four tasks—vocabulary matching, image-supported sentence writing, gap-fill completion, and sentence reordering—were designed to gradually increase cognitive load and reduce external support. Ten first-year undergraduates completed these tasks at the end of a semester-long Chinese elective. Data sources included written outputs, Padlet logs, student reflections, and interviews. Tasks that combined visual cues with sentence-level scaffolds led to more confident and accurate writing. In contrast, grammar-heavy tasks with minimal support resulted in lower accuracy and increased cognitive overload. Drawing on cognitive load theory and dual coding theory, the study proposes a three-phase model: perceptual support, linguistic scaffolding, and output assessment. A rubric assessing language accuracy, content coherence, and peer interaction demonstrated strong inter-rater reliability (κ = .82). The findings offer practical insights into how multimodal tools can be used to scaffold sentence-level writing and provide low-tech assessment alternatives for under-resourced classrooms. The model can be adapted across various proficiency levels and teaching contexts.
