Aceh International Journal of Science & Technology (AIJST) is published by the Graduate School of Syiah Kuala University (PPs Unsyiah) and the Indonesian Soil Science Association (Himpunan Ilmu Tanah Indonesia, Komda Aceh). It is devoted to identifying, mapping, understanding, and interpreting new trends and patterns in science & technology development, especially within Asian countries as well as other parts of the world. The journal endeavors to highlight science & technology development from different perspectives. The aim is to promote broader dissemination of the results of scholarly endeavors into a broader subject of knowledge and practices and to establish effective communication among academic and research institutions, policymakers, government agencies, and persons concerned with the complex issue of science & technology development. The Journal is a peer-reviewed journal. The acceptance decision is made based upon an independent review process supported by rigorous processes and provides constructive and prompt evaluations of submitted manuscripts, ensuring that only intellectual and scholarly work of the greatest contribution and highest significance is published. The AIJST publishes original conceptual and research papers, review papers, technical reports, case studies, management reports, book reviews, research notes, and commentaries. It will occasionally come out with special issues devoted to important topics concerning science & technology development issues. Abstract

In recent years, the used of product based with low environmental impact has become one of the considerations in the construction structure. Attention of the researchers towards the development of natural material has been increasing. The use of natural fibers as composite materials for strengthened structure have been studied. However, natural fibers are influenced by the hydrophilic nature and its specific morphology. Thus, research related to the natural fiber composite materials still needs to be explored. This study aims to evaluate the tensile strength of natural fiber composite materials based on the type of fiber, fiber layer used and its type of resin according to ASTM D3039. The results show that type of fiber, fiber layer used and its type of resin in the composite matrix considerably affects its tensile strength performance.

Abstract

UV-Vis spectroscopy has been used as a promising method for coffee quality evaluation including in authentication of several high-economic coffee types. In this paper, we have compared the abilities of linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and support vector machines classification (SVMC) methods for Luwak coffee classification. UV-Vis spectral data of 50 samples of pure Luwak coffee and 50 samples of pure non-Luwak coffee were acquired using a UV-Vis spectrometer in transmittance mode. The results show that UV-Vis spectroscopy combined with LDA and SVMC was an effective method to classify Luwak and non-Luwak coffee samples. The classification result was acceptable and yielded 100% classification accuracy for both LDA and SVMC methods. However, due to the simplicity and volume of the required calculation, in this present study LDA method is superior to SVMC method.

Abstract

Abstract- This paper presents a mathematical model that transforms the real machine to fictitious machines and our goal is to simulate these and see the behavior of these machines in load. The polyphase machines are developed mainly in the field of variable speed drives of high power because increasing the number of phases on the one hand allows to reduce the dimensions of the components in power modulators energy and secondly to improve the operating safety. By a vector approach (vector space), it is possible to find a set of single-phase machine and / or two-phase fictitious equivalent to polyphase synchronous machine. These fictitious machines are coupled electrically and mechanically but decoupled magnetically. This approach leads to introduce the concept of the equivalent machine (multimachine multiconverter system MMS) which aims to analyze systems composed of multiple machines (or multiple converters) in electric drives. A first classification multimachine multiconverter system follows naturally from MMS formalism. We present an example of a pentaphase (polyphase) synchronous machine for a simulation and study the behavior of the machine load. Keywords: Polyphase machines, multimachine concept, vector space, eigenvectors, eigenvalues, pentaphase machine.

Abstract

Gayo Lues District is known as Citronella and Arabica coffee producer in Aceh province, Indonesia. This paper aims to manage Citronella and Arabica coffee's land arrangement in the Gayo Lues District's cultivated area.  This implementation is aimed at maintaining the peculiarities of citronella products and Arabica coffee. Thus, the two commodities must be separated in terms of allocated sites.  The altitude for the area is 200-2,000 meters above sea level, consisting of ten classes, and the type of soils are Entisols, Oxisols, Inceptisols, and Ultisols. The area's slope between 0- to 40% (4 classes) was used to delineate the land units. There are 49 land units observed within the cultivated area of 160,017.17 ha.  The guidelines for land suitability classification by the Ministry of Agriculture for Citronella and Center for Coffee and Cocoa Research, Jember for Arabica coffee were utilized.   The results showed that 58,275.5 hectares of land were suitable for citronella, and 13,765.75 ha has been planted. The actual land suitability of citronella inside the area of 58,275.5 ha is suitable (S2 class) and marginally suitable (S3-class) and not suitable (N-class) with limiting factors are temperature, water availability, erosion hazard, and nutrient retention.  This land suitability can be improved by providing inputs to increase the level of suitability with temperature, water availability, and erosion hazard (slope) limiting factors. Also, 48,765.3 hectares can be developed for Arabica coffee, and 4,653.5 ha has been planted.  The actual land suitability for Arabica coffee is Suitable, Marginal Suitable, and Not Suitable, limiting the soil's physical properties (adequate soil depth), slope, and chemical properties of the soil.  Once repaired, the land's suitability becomes Suitable (S1-class) (without limiting factor), Suitable, and marginal suitable with the slope as a limiting factor. There is an area of 44,509.75 hectares of land at 200-1,400 m above sea level within the cultivation area developed with a Citronella. There is an area of 44,111.8 ha at the height of 800-2,000 m above sea level, potentially for  Arabica coffee.

Abstract

Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was used to simulate impact of landuse and climate change on water resources in Krueng Jreu subwatershed located in Aceh Province – Indonesia. The subwatershed is a primary source of water to irrigated 233.52 km2 paddy field area through a surface irrigation system. The model performance was considerably good in predicting streamflow. The coefficients of determination varied between 0.58 and 0.72, while the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients (ENS) ranged between 0.65-0.72 and the percentage bias were in the range of -0.36 to 2.30. Scenarios were applied to the best fit model to evaluate watershed responses to land use and climate changes. The model predicted increases in both runoff and water yield by 1% and 0.1% respectively as the result of increasing 15% settlement area. When all agricultural land within subwatershed converted to forest, water yield would increase by 1% during dry period and runoff contribution would decrease by 5%. Increases in surface flow by 23.6% and water yield by 15.1% were found under scenario of increasing 10% of daily precipitation. Increasing in evapotranspiration caused by an increase of 1.5⁰C in daily air temperature would decrease surface flow and water yield by 0.8% and 1.3%, respectively. Combination scenarios of changes in daily temperature and precipitation would increase evapotranspiration rate, annual water yield and runoff contribution.

Abstract

Abstract - There is strong scientific evidence that the average temperature of the earth’s surface is rising and this may be attribute to increased concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2), and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere as released by burning fossil fuels. One of the chief sources of greenhouse gases is burning of fossil fuels. Biogas from biomass appears to have potential as an alternative energy source, which is potentially rich in biomass resources. In the present paper, current literature is reviewed regarding the ecological, social, cultural and economic impacts of biogas technology. In this article an attempt has been made to give an overview of present and future use of biomass as an industrial feedstock for production of fuels, chemicals and other materials. However, to be truly competitive in an open market situation, higher value products are required.

Abstract

Groundwater sustainability has become a serious issue as a water resource needed by society. Therefore, electrical Resistivity Imaging was carried out at Rumbio Jaya, Kampar, and Riau to study groundwater aquifer's electrical characteristics. The equipment used is a Geocis resistivity meter with (32) multi-electrodes alignment. Wenner configuration electrode was applied in this survey. The 2-D Electrical Resistivity inversion results indicate there are three resistivity zones; (1) Low resistivity value (0.0093 – 4.84 Ωm) representing conductive clay; (2) intermediate resistivity value (1.07 – 171 Ωm) indicate as potential aquifer layer; and (3) a high resistivity value (61 – 4000 Ωm) occupying as bolder of rock. All the zones have different thicknesses and depths, but mostly clay layers dan boulders are shown as lenses in the aquifer of the study area. Meanwhile, the aquifer layer is found easily at a depth of 1 meter up to 30 meters.

Abstract

The construction cost as one of the most important project resources should be planned and use efficiently. Cost estimation can be analysed using standard of unit price analysis according to Indonesian National Standard (SNI 7394:2008). Related to unit price analysis for tie beam reinforced concrete, the standard mentioned a specific analysis that combine all materials requirement include reinforcement (unit price analysis No. 6.29). In such analysis, reinforcement requirement is stated as much as 200 kg/m3 of concrete. Considering the diversity of dimension design of building structure caused by geographical location and building function, a further study required to response these problems. This research is aimed to provide information to what extent the unit price analysis related to tie beam reinforced concrete can be enforced in cost estimating. Research process initiated with secondary data collection to building construction located in zone 10 and 15 based on earthquake zone map (SNI 1726:2012) in Province of Aceh. The results of analysis informed that the ratio of reinforcement requirement of tie beam in zone 10 is 198.03 kg/m3 to 217.26 kg/m3 of concrete with average ratio 209.83 kg/m3. For zone 15, reinforcement requirement ratio is 203.76 kg/m3 to 233.83 kg/m3 of concrete with average ratio 215.17 kg/m3. The Potential inaccurate of cost estimation appears in the two review zones. Such inaccuracies may have an impact on the insufficient costs for the work. Thus, the use of the standard unit price analysis needs further assessment for proper application.

Abstract

Abstract- The purpose of this present study was to determine the right sample size in observational study which is focusing on medical or health sciences field. Sample size calculation is actually depends on the type of how the study is designed. For example different formulas are used to calculate the sample size in different type of the study. In this article, the formula of single proportion and two proportions is discussed and an example from medical research, which may contribute to the understanding of this problem, is presented.

Abstract

The commonly used activators in chemical activation of activated carbon are very toxic and poisonous to the aquatic environment. Finding trade-off solutions without compromising the quality of activated carbon and jeopardizing the environment have become the subject of considerable interest. This paper is aimed to shed some light on the inevitable release of chemical activators to the aqueous environment, and offers some possible solutions to overcome the emergence of secondary pollution.
