Abstract

Introduction: Hyposalivation can negatively impact oral health, so the flow rate of saliva needs to be increased. Music with a calm and peaceful atmosphere has been shown to increase the salivary flow rate. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the effect of Sape music on salivary flow rate. Methods: This study used quasi-experimental research with a one-group pretest-posttest approach involving 20 students from the Dentistry Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. Unstimulated saliva was collected in the morning before listening to music using the spitting method for 5 minutes. Subjects were presented with Sape music stimuli for 15 minutes. and during the final 5 minutes of the music session, saliva was collected again using the same spitting method. The collected saliva was recorded as the salivary flow rate in g/minute. Data were analyzed using a parametric paired T-test and were considered significant if the p-value <0,05. Result: The result showed that the mean of salivary flow rate after listening to Sape music was 0,411± 0,142 g/minute, which was higher than before lisitening, which was  0,558±0,135 g/minute.  The paired T-test analysis showed a significant difference in salivary flow rate before and after listening to Sape music which the p-value was 0,001 (p<0,05). Conclusion: Sape music can increase the salivary flow rate.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral health problems, particularly dental caries, continue to be a significant global health challenge for children. Caries leads to pain, infection, impaired nutrition, and affects overall well-being. Probiotics, live microorganisms with potential health benefits, have emerged as a preventive measure in pediatric dentistry, particularly in managing oral microbiota. Purpose: This review evaluates the impact of probiotics on oral health in children, focusing on caries prevention, microbiota composition, plaque, gingival health, and salivary parameters. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted, analyzing randomized controlled trials, clinical trials, and quasi-experimental studies published between 2010 and 2025. Data was synthesized qualitatively to identify trends and outcomes across various probiotic interventions.  Results: Studies generally show that probiotics reduce cariogenic bacteria like Streptococcus mutans, improve plaque control, and enhance gingival health. However, long-term benefits for caries prevention remain inconsistent. The effectiveness of probiotics varies by strain, dosage, and delivery method. Conclusion: Probiotics hold promise as adjunctive agents in pediatric oral health care but are not a substitute for traditional oral hygiene practices. Further research, particularly long-term studies with standardized protocols, is essential to establish clear guidelines for their use in preventing caries in children.

Abstract

Background: Oral candidiasis remains one of the most common opportunistic infections in people living with HIV (PLHIV), particularly in patients with impaired cellular immunity. Pseudomembranous candidiasis is clinically relevant because it may indicate immune deterioration, low CD4+ T-cell count, or advanced HIV disease. Case Presentation: This case series describes two HIV-positive male patients who presented with extensive pseudomembranous oral candidiasis. The first patient was a 30-year-old male with known HIV infection and concomitant Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia. Intraoral examination showed removable whitish-yellow plaques on the tongue, vestibular mucosa, and lips, with an erythematous base after removal. His CD4+ T-cell count was 258 cells/μL. Antiretroviral therapy was initiated during hospitalization, followed by antifungal treatment using nystatin oral drops, ketoconazole, and adjunctive antiseptic mouthwash. The second patient was a 35-year-old ART-naïve male with systemic symptoms and widespread removable pseudomembranous plaques involving the tongue, buccal mucosa, gingiva, and palate. His CD4+ T-cell count was 11 cells/μL, indicating profound immunosuppression. Conclusion: Pseudomembranous oral candidiasis may serve as an important clinical marker of CD4+ T-cell depletion and immune deterioration in PLHIV. Dentists should recognize this lesion early because oral findings may support timely referral, HIV disease assessment, and comprehensive management.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral traumatic fibroma is a benign reactive lesion resulting from mechanical irritation or trauma, characterized by an overproduction of fibrous connective tissue within the oral mucosa. Standard management of traumatic fibroma typically involves surgical excision. However, in pediatric patients, surgical procedures may present challenges due to the potential for procedural anxiety associated with sharp instruments and pain. Purpose: This case reporting and highlighting non-invasive therapy for the management of oral traumatic fibroma in children. Case description: A 13-year-old girl presented to dental hospital with complaints of swelling and ulceration on the left lower labial mucosa and the left dorsum of the tongue, following a traffic accident that occurred two weeks earlier. Treatment included debridement, removal of irritating factors, and the patient was prescribed topical coating agent. The patient is scheduled for close monitoring and observation of oral traumatic fibroma. A significant reduction in lesion size was observed. The patient demonstrated high compliance and satisfaction with the treatment process. Conclusion: Minimally invasive treatment presents a viable and well-tolerated option for managing oral traumatic fibroma in pediatric patients. This method can successfully reduce the lesion's size without requiring invasive procedures.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral Candidiasis is a common fungal infection caused by Candida albicans-a predominant cause of fungal infections in the oral cavity. Prolonged use of antifungal agents for oral candidiasis can be associated with side effects, indicating a need to consider alternative therapies. Natural resources such as papaya leaves and garlic have the effect of antifungal against Candida albicans that may serve as alternative therapies. In vitro study of  the minimum inhibition and fungicidal concentration of combined extracts, papaya leaves and garlic against Candida albicans need to be examined. Purpose: To determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of combined extracts of papaya leaves and garlic against Candida albicans. Methods: A laboratory experimental study with a post-test control group design was established. The minimum inhibitory concentration was tested using Kirby-bauer method and the minimum fungicidal concentration was tested with agar dilution method. The ratio of each extract in each concentration is 1: 1 which made into five concentrations; 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%. Results: This study showed the 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% extracted of papaya leaves and garlic combination could not inhibit and eliminate Candida albicans colonies. Conclusion: No inhibitory and fungicidal effect of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% papaya leaves and garlic extract combination. Higher concentration need to be considered.

Abstract

Introduction: Streptococcus mutans is the main cause of dental caries. Pineapple and stevia exhibit antibacterial activity against S. mutans. Their combination can be formulated into a non-cariogenic jelly candy. Purposes: To investigate the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of jelly candy formulated with pineapple and stevia against S. mutans. Methods: This study used an in vitro experimental design with a post-test only control group design. The antibacterial activity was assessed using the agar well diffusion method, while the antibiofilm activity was evaluated using the microtiter plate method. The experimental groups consisted of pineapple and stevia jelly candy, stevia jelly candy without pineapple, and a negative control group (jelly candy without pineapple and stevia). Antibacterial activity was determined by measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone, whereas antibiofilm activity was assessed by measuring absorbance or optical density values. Data from each test were analysed using Welch’s ANOVA and One-Way ANOVA tests. Results: Welch’s ANOVA analysis of inhibition zone diameters among groups demonstrated a significant difference (p < 0.05). The largest inhibition zone was observed in the pineapple and stevia jelly candy group (10.72 mm). The One-Way ANOVA results also revealed significant differences in absorbance values among all groups (p < 0.05). Pineapple and stevia jelly candy group exhibited the lowest absorbance value compared with other groups. Conclusion: Pineapple and stevia jelly candy possessed antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against S. mutans.

Abstract

Introduction: Endodontic irrigation solutions play an important role in the success of root canal treatment because they are able to clean debris, dissolve necrotic tissue, and reduce the number of bacteria. However, the effectiveness of irrigation materials can be affected by temperature factors during clinical procedures. Purpose: This study aims to analyse the effect of temperature on the solubility of several endodontic irrigation materials using the COSMO-RS computational modelling method as a predictive approach. Methods: This study is an analytical observational study endodontic irrigation). Chemical structure data were obtained from the PubChem database and analysed using COSMO-RS software Results: The results showed that increasing the temperature from 36oC to 37oC significantly increased the solubility of all irrigation materials. CHX had the highest solubility, followed by EDTA and MTAD. Conclusion: Increasing temperature has been shown to increase the solubility of endodontic irrigants, while the COSMO-RS computational method effectively predicts solubility before laboratory testing.
