Abstract

As one of the sacraments of initiation in the Catholic Church, the Sacrament of Confirmation has an important spiritual element for the salvific work of Christians. The role of the third person of God, the Holy Spirit, often appears in the liturgy of this sacrament. This sacrament has a physical sign in the form of anointing oil that has a deep meaning from its historical, biblical and theological background. The theology of the sacrament of chrismation developed with one of them being elaborated by St. Thomas Aquinas in Summa Theologiae. In Summa Theologiae, there are several basic theological concepts of this sacrament of confirmation. From this history and theology, the sacrament of chrismation has a meaning that brings Christians to maturity in faith.

Abstract

This article is entitled "History, Structure and Theology of the Third Eucharistic Prayer for the 2020 Eucharistic Celebration: Pastoral Vision Management and Leadership." This article aims to provide a deeper understanding of the development, structure and theological significance of the third Eucharistic Prayer in the 2020 Eucharistic Celebration. This paper focuses on selecting the Third Eucharistic Prayer as the main study, based on the idea of the Liturgy as the source and pinnacle of Church life as described in the Sacrosanctum Concilium (SC) n. 10. Liturgy is not only a formal ritual of worship, but also the core of the identity and mission of the Catholic Church which drives and gives meaning to all ecclesiastical activities. Thus, this paper tries to explain the inspirations originating from liturgical texts, especially DSA III, which can be applied in the pastoral work of the Catholic Church. This paper aims to create bridge between liturgical theology and its application in a concrete pastoral context. By exploring the meaning of DSA III, we can find inspiration that can help direct the Vision Management and Pastoral Leadership of the Catholic Church. Indeed, the inspiration for the Vision Management and Pastoral Leadership of the Catholic Church can be found in various sources, including the Holy Bible and the teachings of the Church Fathers, but this paper is a simple effort that tries to highlight the potential contained in DSA III, a prayer that is very often used in celebration of the Eucharist on Sunday by the faithful. In this research it was found that DSA III contains some key values that can be applied in management and pastoral leadership within a parish. Thus, DSA is also a series of prayers which are intended to be prayed and absorbed together by the priest and the congregation. More than that, DSA is not limited to a series of prayers that stop at the Eucharistic liturgy. DSA is also lived out in daily activities, especially when people gather together at church to be involved in church services.

Abstract

The Church is both a spiritual and secular institution; it is called spiritual because it contains religious practices that connect God and humans through sacramental celebrations, and it is called secular because it contains governance systems such as those that occur in organizations in general. One of the concerns that occurs in the Catholic Church is the existence of a wage system for parish employees that is still not appropriate. This paper will review the issue and try to examine the problem from the perspective of the Encyclical Laborem Exercens written by Pope John Paul II, specifically in Article 19. The review used in this paper is Human Resource Management and Social Teaching of the Church. This paper will attempt to understand the basic concepts of Human Resource Management and the Wage System of Parish Employees, then understand the elements of work spirituality and the ideas of Church Social Teaching in the Encyclical Laborem Exercens Article 19 on Wages, and finally review the extent to which the ideas in the Encyclical Laborem Exercens Article 19 can inspire the wage system of parish employees.

Abstract

In his address for the ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the institution of the Synod of Bishops, Pope Francis said that synodality is a new way of church life in the third millennium. A synodal Church is formed by the communion of the people of God who are active and engaged in evangelization. Synodality is a manifestation of the Church as a communion of God's people and a pilgrimage of the Church in the world. With Synodality, both clergy and laity are invited to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit through the sensus fidei, so that they can proclaim the Gospel to the world. Through the three main pillars of the Synodal Church, namely communion, participation, and mission, all the faithful are invited to listen to the Holy Spirit. The synodality of the Church cannot be separated from the parish circles because the parish circles are the foundation of the Church and support the life of the Church in its mission as salt and light. The parish circles are also a form of fellowship of the people of God. In addition, the parish circles from a management perspective are also a form of organization that cannot be separated from attitudes and organizational satisfaction. In the implementation of pastoral care in the parish circles, there are various attitudes and organizational satisfaction issues, such as parish circle administrators who are less proactive, encouraging the parish circle people to be active, disharmony between administrators and people in the parish circles, the tardiness in various parish circle activities, and the lack of young people who are interested in doing activities in the parish circles. With synodality in the parish circles, which is guided by the attitude of listening to each other sensus fidei, problems related to attitudes and organizational satisfaction in the parish circles are able to be resolved.

Abstract

The Council of Nicaea Constantinople in 325-381 established the dogma of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. Of these four notes of the Church, the holiness of the Church is perhaps the most hotly debated topic today. The reason for this is due to the revealed scandals in the Catholic Church in the last few decades. Moreover, the perpetrators are people who are within the highest levels of hierarchy the Church itself. Apparently, mortal sin does not escape the lay people, priests, religious and even bishops. If holiness means a state of sinlessness, then how can we understand that the Church is holy but at the same time its members sin? Is this teaching of the Council of Nicea-Constantinople still relevant in the 21st century? In this paper, the author wants to deepen the dogma of the holiness of the Church by studying from sources such as the Holy Scriptures, the Fathers of the Church, and Magisterial Documents about where the Church derives its holiness from and for what purpose it is holy. By doing so, the dogma of the holy Church will hopefully be better understood by today's readers.

Abstract

Young Catholics are called to continue proclaiming faith in the world as modern-day images of Jesus. In Christus Vivit, Pope Francis identifies young people as the "now of the Church" and recognizes their potential to improve the world. As a result, the Church must prepare the formation of young Catholics earnestly. This research explores and designs pastoral care for young Catholics at St. Josafat Church in Surabaya, in line with Christus Vivit. Using qualitative methods, the researcher conducted interviews, surveys, and literature studies to analyze the current pastoral care and develop a new design. While the pastoral movement at St. Josafat Church is active and based on Christus Vivit, it remains focused on bonding and lacks full integration. The general guidelines for the pastoral care of young people at St. Josafat Church Surabaya is aimed to enhance the formation process of young people. These guidelines address several needs specific to the youth, including: building bonding, faith formation, self-recognition and self-potential, leadership development, and the implementation of a missionary spirit. In the next phase, this general guideline for pastoral care for young people according to Christus Vivit will be periodically evaluated to ensure that pastoral care for young people is increasingly optimal and relevant.

Abstract

This study focuses on understanding the concept of silence according to Henri Nouwen and its relevance to spiritual life in the modern era. The research aims to explore Nouwen's idea of silence, which is often equated with solitude or loneliness. However, silence is a distinct concept that plays a crucial role in fostering spiritual growth. In contemporary times, we are inundated with a constant flow of information through digital devices and media platforms, a hallmark of the modern age. Consequently, we often find ourselves too busy and struggle to carve out moments of stillness and tranquility. Such conditions, sooner or later, can hinder the development of spiritual life. This paper examines the relevance of silence in the modern world and provides practical ways to integrate it into daily life. The methodology employed is a literature review, analyzing Nouwen's writings and other relevant sources from books and journals on modern life. The findings reveal that silence is essential and can be meaningfully practiced in today's modern context.

Abstract

This article examines the practice of capital punishment from the perspective of the encyclical Veritatis Splendor, a moral document issued by Pope John Paul II in 1993. The article focuses on the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. The Church, as expressed in Veritatis Splendor, considers capital punishment to be inconsistent with human dignity and the core principles of Christian morality. The encyclical emphasizes that human life holds intrinsic value because it is created in the image of God, and that capital punishment violates the fundamental moral principle of the right to life. This theological reflection begins with a discussion of natural law inherent to human beings and follows Jesus' command to a rich young man that the highest good can only be found through a relationship with God. The article then highlights the human freedom to obey the truth and moral law, which guide individuals toward the true good, which is God. In the context of capital punishment, the misuse of human freedom to kill is considered an intrinsically evil act (intrinsece malum), which can never be justified, even with pragmatic reasons such as deterrence or justice. In summary, Veritatis Splendor stresses that every human action, including within the criminal justice system, must be directed toward the true good and respect for human dignity, rejecting capital punishment as a morally contradictory act to the Christian faith.
