Abstract

Older adults in Desa Patianrowo face interrelated health and economic challenges, characterized by a high prevalence of degenerative diseases such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus, along with limited economic independence. Although participation in the Bina Keluarga Lansia (BKL) program is relatively high, existing empowerment initiatives have not yet optimally integrated health improvement and economic strengthening based on local potential. This study reports the implementation of the TELADAN Lansia Program, a community-based service initiative designed to integrate health education and economic empowerment through the utilization of butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea). The program involved 20 older adults and was implemented using a participatory approach in collaboration with BKL cadres and village stakeholders. Key activities included education on degenerative disease management, training on butterfly pea cultivation and processing, community-based enterprise development, and basic marketing and product branding. Program outcomes were assessed using structured pre–post evaluations to capture changes in participants’ knowledge, skills, and productive capacities. The implementation of the program resulted in improved health literacy, enhanced technical skills in cultivation and processing, and increased capacity to market locally based products. In addition, the program led to the establishment of older adult business groups, productive cultivation plots, value-added products, and digital marketing channels. Importantly, the TELADAN Lansia Program establishes a sustainable empowerment model integrated with local BKL cadres, supporting long-term continuity and offering potential for replication in communities with similar characteristics.

Abstract

Sadi Village, located in East Tasifeto District, Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, possesses significant geological and paleontological value, particularly related to the discovery of ancient elephant (Stegodon) fossils. This scientific potential provides strong prospects for development as an educational geotourism destination. However, its utilization remains limited due to the insufficient number and competencies of local geotourism guides. This community service program aims to strengthen the capacity of local guides through competency-based training to support sustainable tourism development in Sadi Village. The program was implemented through a needs assessment, preparation of competency-based training materials, offline training sessions integrating theoretical instruction and field practice, and evaluation through guiding simulations. The training covered basic geology and paleontology, geotourism interpretation techniques, guiding ethics, and communication skills. The results indicate improvements in participants’ knowledge, interpretative skills, communication abilities, and professional confidence in delivering geological information. Furthermore, the program fostered active involvement of local youth and community members in managing and promoting the geotourism site. The activity demonstrates that competency-based training can enhance local human resource quality and contribute to strengthening the geotourism identity of Sadi Village while supporting sustainable tourism development.

Abstract

Jurusen Village is one of the main pineapple-producing areas in Pegasing, Central Aceh. However, pineapples are predominantly sold fresh, which poses a high risk of post-harvest losses due to their perishable nature. Processing pineapples into more durable products, such as pineapple sticks, offers a potential solution to increase value and reduce losses. This community service program aimed to empower housewives by providing socialization and introductory training on processing fresh pineapples into pineapple sticks to enhance added value and income potential. The program employed a socialization-based approach involving 14 housewives affiliated with the local Majelis Taklim. Activities included lectures, discussions, and evaluations using pre-test and post-test instruments to assess knowledge changes, complemented by participant satisfaction surveys. The results showed a measurable increase in participants’ knowledge, with post-test scores improving by approximately 28–78% compared to pre-test results. Participants also recognized the potential of processed pineapple products as culinary items and local souvenirs that could contribute to household income. Evaluation results indicated high satisfaction, particularly regarding the relevance, clarity, and usefulness of the materials. The program effectively enhanced participants’ knowledge and awareness of pineapple processing as an initial step toward sustainable community empowerment. Further technical training and marketing assistance are recommended to support commercialization.

Abstract

Parents play a central role in supporting the development of young children with special needs. However, many parents experience emotional stress and limited understanding of appropriate educational and therapeutic services, which affects their acceptance of their children’s conditions. This community service activity was conducted in Sumbersari, Jember Regency, and involved 20 participants consisting of parents of young children with special needs and inclusive early childhood teachers. The activity aimed to enhance parents’ and teachers’ understanding of early intervention services and to strengthen parental acceptance through a communication and partnership-based approach. The methods included socialization, focused discussions, practical demonstrations, and evaluation. Data was collected using pre-test and post-test instruments in the form of checklists with a four-point Likert scale and analyzed descriptively by comparing mean scores. The results indicate an increase in the average scores of parents’ and teachers’ understanding as well as parental acceptance after the implementation of the activity. These findings suggest that socialization and collaborative communication approaches contribute positively to improving participants’ readiness to support early intervention services for children with special needs. This activity contributes as an initial model for strengthening parent–teacher partnerships in creating a more supportive and sustainable early childhood intervention environment.

Abstract

Nutritional problems among primary school children remain a significant public health concern, particularly in the context of the dual burden of malnutrition. This study aimed to examine changes in students’ nutritional knowledge following a school-based healthy plate education intervention. A quasi-experimental pre–post design without a control group was implemented among 63 students from grades IV to VI. The intervention integrated visual media, interactive instruction, and practical demonstrations based on the “My Plate” concept. Knowledge levels were assessed using structured pre-test and post-test instruments and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results showed a substantial shift in knowledge distribution, with the proportion of students in the “good” category increasing from 23.8% to 71.4%. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (Z = -5.543, p < 0.001), with a large effect size (r = 0.69). No participant experienced a decrease in score after the intervention. These findings indicate that school-based interactive nutrition education incorporating visual and experiential components can effectively enhance primary school students’ nutritional knowledge. Further longitudinal studies are recommended to assess the sustainability of behavioral changes.

Abstract

Low exclusive breastfeeding coverage remains closely linked to limited family support and sociocultural influences in infant feeding decisions. In Batak communities, strong kinship structures position the extended family as a key decision-making unit during pregnancy and early childcare. This community engagement program employed a participatory family-based intervention using a one-group pretest–posttest design to empower families to support exclusive breastfeeding through a culturally grounded Mambosuri approach in the Gunung Tinggi Primary Health Care area. The program involved 32 third-trimester pregnant women and their families over a three-month period. The intervention integrated cultural reflection sessions, interactive family discussions, written commitment development, and pre–post evaluation of family knowledge. Findings showed a significant increase in mean knowledge scores from 62.4 to 84.7 (p < 0.001), as well as an increase in the proportion of the good comprehension category from 37.5% to 81.2%. The most notable improvement was observed in fathers’ perceived roles in breastfeeding support. However, the short duration of assistance and the absence of a control group limit broader generalization of the findings. These results suggest that integrating local cultural values into family-centered education may strengthen collective readiness for exclusive breastfeeding in similar community contexts.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) remain a major public health challenge in rural areas due to low health literacy and limited access to healthcare services. This condition was also identified in Daenggune Village, Kinovaro Sub-district, Sigi Regency. This community service program aimed to improve community understanding of NCD prevention and to enhance elementary school students’ knowledge of Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) through an integrative approach. The activities were conducted using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, encompassing health counseling, practice-based PHBS education, group physical activities, and free health screenings. Knowledge improvement was analyzed using a paired t-test, supported by observations of participant engagement and responses. The results demonstrated increased community knowledge regarding NCDs and improved understanding of PHBS among elementary school students, accompanied by high levels of community participation. These findings indicate that an integrative, community-based approach is effective in strengthening health literacy and awareness in rural communities and may serve as a model for enhancing promotive and preventive health programs at the village level.

Abstract

Geosite Ngingrong in Gunungkidul Regency is a karst landscape with significant potential for ecotourism and local creative economy development. However, limited product diversification and institutional capacity of the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) constrain the integration of natural resources into sustainable economic value. This community service program aimed to strengthen the capacity of Pokdarwis Bangun Kencana through training on environmentally friendly souvenir diversification based on locally sourced natural materials. The program employed a participatory training approach integrating conceptual knowledge enhancement, technical skill development, eco-aesthetic design innovation, and basic marketing strategies. The results indicate a 42% average increase in participants’ knowledge, as measured by pre-test and post-test evaluation, and the development of several prototype products reflecting local aesthetics and conservation values. Beyond technical improvement, the program enhanced entrepreneurial motivation and environmental awareness. Conceptually, this initiative contributes an integrative model linking creative economy, eco-aesthetic product design, and community-based ecotourism as a strategy for sustainable village tourism development.

Abstract

Teachers’ quality of work life (QWL) plays a significant role in sustaining instructional effectiveness, particularly in international school settings characterized by multicultural dynamics and complex institutional demands. This study explored teachers’ perceptions of quality of work life following the implementation of a job crafting training program at Sekolah Indonesia Johor Bahru (SIJB), Malaysia. The intervention was conducted using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving 24 teachers and implemented through iterative cycles of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, reflective worksheets, and group discussions, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed patterns consistent with the dimensions of task, relational, and cognitive crafting. Teachers described shifts toward more intentional instructional adaptation, enhanced professional collaboration, and a reframing of work meaning and professional identity. These perceived changes suggest that job crafting functioned as a reflective framework enabling teachers to reinterpret and reorganize existing responsibilities within a multicultural educational environment. The participatory structure of the intervention appeared to strengthen teachers’ sense of agency and contextual relevance. However, the findings reflect short-term interpretive experiences and do not establish long-term behavioral sustainability. This study contributes contextually grounded insights into how job crafting, when embedded within a participatory framework, may support teachers’ perceived quality of work life in international school contexts.
