Abstract

The objective of this study was to explain the reasons behind the way cognitive processes of tenth- grade students occur in writing descriptive text. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected by using students' writing and interview. The subjects of this study were the students of tenth grade at SMAS Amir Hamzah Medan. The findings of this study showed the reasons for tenth-grade students’ cognitive processes in writing were the students' habits of how they usually think about organizing their writing by determining the title and the subjects’ skills of composing an outline descriptive text, the different abilities to think in constructing sentences into text structures of descriptive text, namely identification, and description, and the students had the awareness to rethink their results by reading and reflecting on the text they had written and they revised errors in their text to ensure the results of writing descriptive text.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze Teacher’s Questioning Strategy and Student Response in English Classroom Interaction of Grade VIII at SMP Imelda Medan. The subject of this study were two teachers and two classes of Grade VIII at SMP Imelda Medan. This research used descriptive qualitative design as a research method. The data were collected by doing observation to the classroom, interview to the two English teachers, and record English teaching learning process. The study focused on analyzing the three research questions in this study, they are the teacher’s way in apply questioning strategies in English classroom interaction, teachers’ reason in the use of questioning strategies in English classroom interaction, and how the student’s response to teacher questions. Using Xuerong theory where questioning strategy is divided into 2, namely Question-Planning Strategy and QuestionControlling Strategy, findings of the observation, interview and video recording showed that the two English Teachers in SMP Imelda Medan mostly used Question-controlling Strategy. The researcher also analyzed student’s responses in two classes of grade VIII. Based on the observation in the classroom and video recording, most students were silent when teachers were asking them. Only some students were active in giving responses, those mostly used cognitive in answering the question from teachers. Based on the interview with the teachers, the both teachers have similar purposes, they want to know students understanding, involving in teaching learning process and make the learning atmosphere comfortable and interesting. In addition, teacher 1 is more dominant in giving questions to all students in the class while teacher 2 gives questions to students individually.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the students’ perception by Cake application in speaking skill. This study was conducted at XI grade of SMA Yayasan Dayah Darul Qur’an. The methodology of this study is qualitative descriptive research. The data was collected by distributing the questionnaire and interviews by divided the questionnaire into 3 aspects namely; cognitive, affective, conative. The findings show that Cake Application is appropriate for learning English, particularly for strengthening students’ speaking abilities. Based on questionnaire data of the cognitive, affective, and cognitive aspects which show that almost all students feel that Cake Application is easy to use and helps them in the learning process. The Cake Application is highly valuable since it teaches them more about learning English and how to improve their speaking talents. Students also enjoy using the application since it may change a repetitious method of learning into a speaking method of learning with the use of technology.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop an appropriate media for applying job chapter. This study was carried out at SMKS Karya Bunda Mandiri Medan. This research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) Method. The research of Research and Development contained six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing the material, validating by the experts, revising material, and creating the last was the final product. The data was gathered by distributing questionnaires to students and interviewing an English teacher to get the students' needs. The study's conclusion resulted in developing the Interactive E-Book, which may be used as a teaching medium for students to learn writing descriptive text. The product has been validated by two experts in percentage terms; the average score of expert validations was 87.6% in the content aspect, the presentation aspect was 84.9%, the language aspect was 90.6%, and the layout was 90%. The average score was 88.275% which was categorized as very good, and it was suggested to use it in English class, especially for applying for job chapters at the Vocational School level.

Abstract

The use of textbooks as a teaching media is similar to the conventional approach to class, applying a repeating strategy that students sometimes see as lacking in enthusiasm. As a result, the students' ability in speaking doesn't grow as expected. The research conducted at Permata Bangsa School Binjai with 19 eighth-grade students as the subjects. This study used a debate technique to cultivate speaking material particular focused on the British Parliamentary Style. This study was categorized as a Research and Development (R&D) with questionnaire, interview as the data. The experts gave 98% for the developed speaking materials which means the suitability of the materials for usage by eighth-grade students at Permata Bangsa School Binjai has been confirmed valid through expert validation. The final product named “Speaking Materials Utilizing a Debate Technique for Eighth Grade Students in Junior High School."
