Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate whether Collaborative Strategic Reading significantly affected on students’ reading comprehension. This study was an experimental design. The population of this study was grade VIII students’ of SMP IT Nur Ihsan Medan with the total number 34 students, which was taken as the sample by using total sampling. The students were divided into two groups, namely experimental and control group. The Experimental group was taught by using Collaborative Strategic Reading while the control group was taught without using Collaborative Strategic Reading. The instrument of collecting data was multiple choice test. Content validity was applied in this research. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used the Kuder Richardson (KR-21). The result of the research showed that the reliability of the test was 0.76, it means that the reliability of the test is high. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis revealed that t-test is higher than t-table (3.21 > 2.04) at the level significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) = N-2 = 32. It means that there is a significant effect of applying Collaborative Strategic Reading on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension.Key words: Reading Comprehension, Collaborative Strategic Reading, and Students’ Achievement

Abstract

Writing, regarded as a thinking process enables language learners to explore and transform their ideas into words in accurate and appropriate ways. Although it has been taught from the Elementary school level up to the higher level of education, English teachers and students encounter various challenges. For students, they still get difficulties in writing a text even after being taught. For teachers, correcting students’ writing increases their workload. Therefore, how to reduce the load of teaching writing and to decrease students’ difficulties in writing have become important problem to solve. Through applying a technique in teaching writing, this research aimed to explore whether the application of peer review technique can improve students’ achievement in writing recount text. The method applied in this research was a classroom action research. The subject of the research was X-4 class SMA Negeri 21 Medan. The instruments of collecting the data were writing tasks as quantitative data while observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, diary notes and interview as qualitative data. The finding showed that Peer Review Technique gives contribution to improve students’ achievement in writing recount text. Keywords: Achievement, Writing, Recount Text, Peer Review Technique

Abstract

This study concerns on improving students’ achievement in writing procedure texts through word webbing technique. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The population was the 2012-2013 nine grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Batang Kuis. The number of students was 36, consisting of 21 females and 15 males. The procedure of the research was administrated into two cycles where each cycle consisted of three meetings. Each meeting included four steps namely: planning, action, observation, and reflection. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for collecting the quantitative data was the writing of procedure texts test while the qualitative data were gathered by using interview, diary notes and observation sheet. Based on the data analysis, the mean of students’ score in Test I was 53,47, for the Test II was 63,05, and for the Test III was 75 The qualitative data showed that the students were interested in the applying of Word webbing Technique. The conclusion is that Word Webbing Technique in writing Procedure Texts improves the students’ achievement in writing procedure texts. Abstract

This study attempts to improve students’ writing achievement in recount text through Think-Pair-Share Strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VIII-1 SMPN 1 Pematangsiantar. The number of the students was 32 students, consisted of 5 males and twenty seven females. The research was conducted in two cycles and consisted of six meetings. The instruments for collecting data were writing tests as the quantitative data and diary notes, observation sheet, interview sheet and questionnaire sheet as qualitative data. Based on the writing score, students’ scores kept improving in every test. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the first test as a pre-test was 57.84, for the second test as a post test I was 73.56, for the third test as a post test II was 77.56. Based on diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that students were actively involved in writing process. The result of the research showed that Think-Pair-Share Strategy can improve students’ achievement in writing recount text.   Keywords: Think Pair Share, Writing, Recount text, Action research

Abstract

This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing hortatory exposition text by using PLEASE (Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply, End) strategy  through classroom action research. The subjects of the research were 41 students of class XI IA 2 SMA Negeri 1 Tanjung Morawa. After analyzing the data in the two-cycle of classroom action research, it was found that there was an improvement of students score from 49.88 in the test I became 64.90 in the test II in cycle I and improved again became 74.23 in the test III in cycle II. In line with the data, it was showed that the use of PLEASE (Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply, End) strategy significantly improved student’s achievement in writing hortatory exposition text. English teachers are suggested to apply PLEASE strategy as one of the alternatives to teach writing hortatory exposition text in the class. Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to improve students’ writing achievement in a procedure text by using Still Pictures. The method of the study was Classroom Action Research with two cycles and six meetings. The subject of the study was the students of Grade VII students’ MTs. S. Syahbuddin Mustafa Nauli. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consists of three meetings. The instruments for collecting data were taken from writing tests as quantitative data. The result shows the improvement of the students’ score from orientation test to Cycles I and II tests. The mean of the students’ score for orientation test as Test I was 50.41, Cycle I test was 66.25, and Cycle II test was 85.41. The total percentage of the improvement from Orientation test to Cycles I and II tests was 99.2 %. It can be concluded that the use of Still Pictures improves students’ achievement in writing a procedure text. The qualitative data taken from Observation Sheet and Diary Notes show that the students’ were enthusiastic and attracted in writing a procedure text because the Still Pictures encourage their creativities and ideas to write better. For English teachers, it is suggested to use Still Pictures as one alternative media of teaching writing a procedure text.

Abstract

This study deals with the improving students’ achievement in reading narrative text by using reciprocal teaching. The research of this study was conducted by using action research. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students SMA Negeri 6 Medan. One class was taken as the subject, namely the students from X-5. There were 49 students, consisting of 22 male and 27 female. This research was done in two cycles; there was three meetings in cycle I and three meetings in cycle II. The instruments for collecting data were reading narrative text (25 items of multiple choice tests) teacher make test as quantitative data and interview sheet, observation sheet and diary notes as qualitative data. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the treatment I was 61.79, for the treatment II was 72.24 and treatment III was 81.71. The data showed that the students’ score was rising in every treatment. The conclusion is that the use of reciprocal teaching method can improve students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. It suggested to English teacher to apply reciprocal teaching method in teaching reading comprehension. Key words: reading, narrative text, reciprocal teaching.

Abstract

This study deals with the students’ achievement improvement in writing procedure texts by using videos by applying classroom action research. The subjects of this research were 38 students of class X-1 SMA TELADAN MEDAN. After analyzing the data in two cycles of classroom action research, it was found there was an improvement of students’ mean score from 60.44 in assessment before applying video became 68.52 in cycle I and improved again became 78.89 in cycle II. It means that the use of video significantly improves the students’ achievement in writing procedure texts. Keywords: writing, procedure text, action research, videos, X-I SMA Teladan Medan.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out The Effect of Applying POSSE (Predict-Organize-Search-Summarize-Evaluate) Strategy on the Students’ Reading Comprehension. This study used the experimental design. The population of this study was the students of SMA Negeri 2 Medan. There were sixty students taken as the sample of the research. This study was conducted with two randomized groups namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by applying POSSE strategy while control group was taught without applying POSSE strategy. The instrument of collecting the data was multiple choice test which consists of 40 items. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used Kuder-Richardson (KR-21). The calculation shows the reliability was 0.81(high). The data were analyzed by using t-test. The calculation shows that t-observed (4.76) is higher than t-table (2.00) at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that there was a significant effect of applying POSSE strategy on the students’ reading comprehension. Keywords: POSSE Strategy, Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

This study attemps to imorove the students’ achivement in reading comprehension through inquiry technique. The study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subjects of the research were the 45 students of Grade XI SMA Negeri 1 Bahorok. It was conducted in two Cycles and consisted of six meetings.The instruments for colecting data used Reading Comprehension tests for quantitative data and Diary Notes, Interview Sheet, and Observation Sheet for qualitative data. Based on the Reading Comprehension score, students score in pre test, kept improving in every test. Based on Diary Notes, Observation sheet and Interview Sheet, it was found that the students were actualy involved in reading process. The results of the reasearch showed that Inquiry Technique can improve the students’ achivement in Reading Comprehension. In orientation test the mean of the students’ score was 53, the mean of the students’ score in Cycle I was 62.07, and the mean of the students’ score in Cycle II was 71.6. Based on the Observation Sheet, Diary Notes, and Interview Sheet, it was found that the teaching-learning process run well. The conclusion is that Inquiry Technique improved the students’ reading Coprehension and it is suggested to the English teacher to apply Inquiry Technique in Reading Comprehension.
