DEVELOPING WRITING ASSESSMENT TASK OF ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXT BASED ON CURRICULUM 2013 FOR ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMK TELKOM MEDAN Yulita Sarwinna; Rahmad Husein; Anggarini Thesisia Saragih

This study aims to develop English writing assessment tasks of analytical exposition text for eleventh grade students of multimedia program at SMK Telkom Medan. This study was conducted by research and development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new writing assessment tasks, validating by experts, revising writing assessment tasks, and final product. The subject of this research was the eleventh grade students of multimedia program at SMK Telkom Medan. The instruments for collecting data were questionnaire and interview. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing questionnaire to the eleventh grade students of multimedia program to get the students’ needs. The evaluators of the developed writing assessments were two experts namely an English lecturer and English teacher. The developed assessment in each task was authentic assessment that consists of three competences, such as, attitude competence, knowledge competence, and skill competence. The writing assessment tasks have been validated by experts. The average score are 3.6 based on the highest interval of numerical scale which was 4.00. In the form percentage, it got 91.3% so it was categorized “Very Good”. It means the developing English writing assessments are appropriate for the eleventh grade students of multimedia program at SMK Telkom Medan. The aims of this study is to analyze picture series trigger memory retrieval of a story as represented in writing narration. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The source of this data are the students of SMA Swasta Kartika Medan which consists of 18 students. To collect the data, elicitation technique was used in this study. To elicit the students writing, picture series of different completeness will be presented to the students. There are three concurrent flows of action to analyze the data, they are data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/ verification. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the way how picture series trigger memory retrieval is that by suiting the number of clues presented to the background knowledge of the writers. The more the background knowledge of the writers have, the less clues they need to trigger memory retrieval. On the other hand, the less the background knowledge of the writers have, the more clues they need to trigger memory retrieval. This study aimed to describe the content validity of English summative test items of the eighth grade students at SMPN 4 Pollung in connection with the learning indicators, to investigate the reason of describing content validity and to write the test items with good content validity.In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative design. The data in this study were the test items of summative test that obtained by coming and asking the test from the English teacher at the school. This study described the conformity and inconformity of the English summative test items in the even semester of the eighth grade students at SMPN 4 Pollung with the learning indicators. Then the researcher interpreted the conformity level of the English summative test to the learning indicators in term of content validity by using Arikunto’s criteria.The findings of this study showed that the test items is 35% conform to the learning indicators and it falls into the level 21 – 40% which is called poor. It means that the content validity of the English summative test items of the eighth grade students of SMPN 4 Pollung is poor. Keywords: content validity, summative test.

This research aimed to develop learning media for teaching writing descriptive text by using Lectora Inspire. This research was conducted by using educational research and development (R&D) proposed by Gall, Gall & Borg method through six phases: gathering data and information, conducting need analysis, designing media, experts validating, revising, and final product. The subjects of this research are 27 students of grade ten of Travel Agency and Tourism program of SMKN 7 Medan which is located in at Jl. STM 12 Sitirejo Medan. The data and data resources were the teacher’s lesson plan, teacher’s interview, and students’ questionnaires result. After getting the last data, the media should be planned to be designed as the students’ needs. The media were developed and had been validated by the experts. The percentage of the media from the experts is 90% that is categorized as very eligible. It can be concluded that interactive learning media is already appropriate to be used as a learning media in teaching writing descriptive text. This study was conducted to find out the teacher’s strategies in teaching writing recount text and describe how the strategies applied in teaching writing recount text at SMA Negeri 1 Tebing Tinggi. It used qualitative research design. The subject of this research was one of the English teacher in SMA Negeri 1 Tebing Tinggi. The data of this research were the teacher’s strategies and the activities in teaching writing recount text. The results showed that the teacher applied four strategies from seven strategies by Haynes and Zacarian, they were (1) making lesson visual, (2) modifying vocabulary instruction, (3) using cooperative learning strategy and (4) determining key concepts. Those are the ways how teacher applying the strategies: First, in observing he applied lesson visual strategy. The second, in questioning he modified vocabulary instruction. Third, in experimenting he applied cooperative learning strategy. Finally, he applied determining key concept strategy in associating and communicating stages.Key words: Teaching Writing, Teacher’s Strategies, Recount Text, Qualitative Research.

DEVELOPING STUDENTS’ WORKBOOK FOR SPEAKING SKILL BASED ON INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING FOR GRADE SEVEN OF SMP SWASTA ISLAM TERPADU HIKMATUL FADHILLAH MEDAN Syafrida Matondang; Indra Hartoyo; Ade Aini Nuran

This study aims to (1) investigate how the workbook for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan, (2) know relevant workbook needed for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan, (3) develop a students’ workbook for speaking skill based on Inquiry-based Learning for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan. The research was conducted by using the Research and Development method from Gall, Gall and Borg (2003). The research subject was English teacher and students for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan. The instrument used was teacher’s interview and students’ questionnaire. The workbook was validated by validators that consist of material expert and English teacher practitioner by using questionnaires validation sheets. The data were collected by using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that: (1) the existing workbook does not support students to do work actively, (2) relevant workbook that is needed by students is workbook based on inquiry-based learning, and (3) the developed inquiry-based learning workbook has been valid with a percentage of 95.55 % from English lecturer and 97.03% from the English teacher and this workbook is appropriate with students’ needs for speaking skills.
