Journal of English in Academic and Professional Communication (JEAPCo) is a journal published twice a year focusing on the field of English as a second or foreign language which is widely applied in various academic and professional contexts across cultures and nations. The journal encourages exchanges of information and knowledge generated from research and non-research contributions in order to widen perspectives and to strengthen the educational practices of English Language and Communication Teaching, to encourage link between education in these areas and workplace world, and particularly to develop the field of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) across disciplines. More specific areas are those related to need analysis, curriculum and pedagogy, materials development, assessment, corpus and multimodality, technology and CALL, implications of professional communication practices to the English teaching and learning, issues of employability and the relationship between English language teaching and workplace demands, and other issues concerned with the nature of English language and professional communication across different academic settings, workplaces, and cultures. The journal invites teachers, academics, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers who are interested in the issues above to publicize their works. The forms of submission to this journal are: 1. (original) research articles, 2. literature review articles, 3. practitioner inquiry articles, and 4. reflection and innovation articles

Abstract

There were at least two crucial problems faced by the students of SMPN 4 Jember in reading class. The first problem was the teachers technique that was not able to improve students reading comprehension. The second problem was students inability in answering different level of questions. In other words, the students score on reading comprehension were poor. To solve the two problems, the researcher conducted a classroom action research by using Question  And Answer Relationship strategy in improving students reading comprehension. The findings showed that QAR-TIRRE strategy improved students reading comprehension. In the first cycle, the number of students who got the score greater or equal to 70 was only 19 students out of 38 students or 50%. It had not fulfilled the criterion of success yet. But, in the second cycle, the students who got the score greater or equal to 70 were 27 out of 38 students or 71, 05%. In addition, the result of the students participation increased from 05,26% in cycle I to 10,53% in cycle II. It fulfilled the criterion of the success in terms of score improvement. Based on the result, the researcher claimed that the QAR-TIRRE strategy improved students reading comprehension. Hopefully, it could be significant input for the teacher and other researchers to teach and conduct research especially related to the teaching of reading.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out whether or not there was a correlation between learning achievement of reading skill and writing skill. This study was a comparative study to determine the relationship between variables that cannot be done experimentally because the independent variables had worked and had an influence on the dependent variable (effect). The subjects of this study were all students of the English Study Program for Semester 1 and 2 Academic Year 2018/2019. They were 80 students who have taken reading courses (Literal Reading and Interpretive Reading) and writing courses (Paragraph Writing and Essay Writing). The data collection method used in this study were observation and documentation. The data obtained was analyzed by using Correlation Test and Significance Test. The result of this study showed that reading skill had a positive relationship with writing skill. The Correlation Coefficient (r) or r-count of the reading skill and writing skill was 0.897. It can be concluded that there was a positive relationship between the students’ reading skill and writing skill.

Abstract

The availability of technologies for instructional purposes has grown rapidly. One of them is using a digital story to teach English for polytechnic students. Actually, it is not a new learning platform, but few teachers apply it in their own classroom especially in the Asian context where English is viewed as a foreign language. To fill this void, the researcher deployed digital storytelling which involved students in creating digital stories and voicing their experience orally. This article further explains the implementation of digital storytelling as a pedagogical language input to foster the students speaking skills which involved the first semester students in Basic English course. Besides, the students engage actively in describing their experiences and showing visual background, which was assisted by a technological application available. The practical implication of this project is that the EFL teachers are able to deploy digital storytelling in their classroom as a medium to bridge learners through meaningful context and social practices.

Abstract

This study focuses on the use of conjunctive adjuncts that link one sentence to another in 20 English scientific articles published in four different journals. Text analysis is employed to investigate the use of conjunctive expressions, the most frequently used categories and forms of conjunctive adjuncts, and possible patterns in the use of conjunctions based on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) framework. 221 items of conjunctive expressions are found covering 24.69% of the total number of sentences written. Additive conjunction is the category which is the most frequently used, while ‘however’ is the form which is used in the highest frequency. Unfortunately, this study is quite far from sufficient to draw a conclusion regarding the possible patterns of the use of the conjunctions in the subject journals.

Abstract

The urgency of classroom management in the English classroom is indisputable. It is said so since classroom management is the fundamental component of the successful teaching and learning processes. However, many teachers are still confused about how to practice good classroom management. Coping with the previous dilemma, this paper aimed at describing the five crucial elements of practicing good classroom management. Those elements are listed as follows: teacher talk, teacher talking time, voice management, physical presence, and seating arrangement through a literature review. It is expected that this paper can give a clear explanation related to the five crucial elements. With that in mind, classroom management can be well-practiced.
