Abstract

This study focuses on the use of conjunctive adjuncts that link one sentence to another in 20 English scientific articles published in four different journals. Text analysis is employed to investigate the use of conjunctive expressions, the most frequently used categories and forms of conjunctive adjuncts, and possible patterns in the use of conjunctions based on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) framework. 221 items of conjunctive expressions are found covering 24.69% of the total number of sentences written. Additive conjunction is the category which is the most frequently used, while ‘however’ is the form which is used in the highest frequency. Unfortunately, this study is quite far from sufficient to draw a conclusion regarding the possible patterns of the use of the conjunctions in the subject journals.

Abstract

Creativity plays a crucial role in innovation, problem-solving, and both individual and societal advancement, enabling individuals to generate novel ideas, develop effective solutions, and approach challenges with adaptability. The SCAMPER technique is used to foster creative and innovative thinking, providing a structured method for idea generation and refinement. SCAMPER encompasses seven creative strategies: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to Another Use, Eliminate, and Reverse. This study examines students' perceptions of SCAMPER in developing creative writing skills within English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes. A qualitative case study method was employed, involving second-semester students from the Informatics Engineering Study Program enrolled in Intermediate English courses. Data collection methods included semi-structured interviews and questionnaires, providing insights into students’ experiences with SCAMPER in writing procedural texts. The findings reveal that the SCAMPER technique enhances creativity, cognitive flexibility, and innovation in writing, enabling students to produce varied and explorative texts. Furthermore, the approach supports critical thinking and deeper idea exploration. Although some students struggled with adapting to the creative thinking process, the overall response to SCAMPER was positive, highlighting its potential as an effective tool in ESP learning environments.

Abstract

Marine tourism is a natural tourism activity that takes place in coastal areas which includes beach, seascape, and sea underwater. The development of marine tourism destinations in the southern coastal area of Jember Regency is urgently needed especially to the areas with promising prospects like Papuma and Watu Ulo beaches which are known to be located in the Blue Diamond area. Through the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) method, it is expected that a framework can be designed to identify the opportunity of an area to become a tourist attraction. In the ROS analysis process, there are four criteria that become parameters, which are: experience, environment, location, and example of activities. The purpose of this research is to identify the recreational zones in planning that does not conflict with the principles of marine area management. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method approach. The result of this research is that Papuma Beach falls into the category of class II Semi-Primitive Motorized and Watu Ulo Beach in the category of class III Roaded Natural.
