Abstract

The development of technology and communication has been raising to the Baby Boomers generation, generation X, generation Y, generation Z, and generation Alpha. Each generation has different characteristics in learning activities. Indonesian for Speakers of Other Languages (BIPA) can be learned from the Baby Boomers generation to the Alpha generation. Characteristic differences among generations in learning BIPA should be adjusted regarding the learning model used. The suitable learning model for each generation’s characteristic makes the learning BIPA easier for the students and teachers to achieve the learning goals. This study aims to describe the BIPA learning model based on the characteristics from each generation of students. The research method used is literature studies. The results of this study are producing BIPA learning model across generation which is consisting of (1) BIPA learning procedure, (2) learning environment, and (3) learning support system. The BIPA learning procedure is the teaching phases developed by BIPA teachers based on the characteristics of the BIPA student’s generation with the purpose of achieving the competency standards. The learning environment is created based on the social system and the characteristics of the BIPA students’ generation. The support system for the across generations BIPA learning model consists of learning resources, learning media, and teaching materials that are adjusted to the characteristics of the generation of BIPA students.

Abstract

This study focuses on the use of conjunctive adjuncts that link one sentence to another in 20 English scientific articles published in four different journals. Text analysis is employed to investigate the use of conjunctive expressions, the most frequently used categories and forms of conjunctive adjuncts, and possible patterns in the use of conjunctions based on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) framework. 221 items of conjunctive expressions are found covering 24.69% of the total number of sentences written. Additive conjunction is the category which is the most frequently used, while ‘however’ is the form which is used in the highest frequency. Unfortunately, this study is quite far from sufficient to draw a conclusion regarding the possible patterns of the use of the conjunctions in the subject journals.

Abstract

This study explores the pivotal role of language in fostering cross-cultural appreciation among Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) awardees. We examined the experiences of two awardees of prestigious international exchange programs to understand how language acquisition and use influenced their cultural perceptions and interactions. Using a mixed-methods approach, we conducted in-depth interviews and administered surveys to gather data on the participants’ language learning journeys, intercultural communications, and shifts in cultural perspectives. The selected participants represented diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds and completed exchanges in countries where they needed to navigate a foreign language. Our findings reveal that language proficiency significantly enhanced the awardees’ ability to appreciate and engage with host cultures. Key themes emerged, including: 1) the role of language as a gateway to deeper cultural understanding; 2) Challenges and breakthroughs in intercultural communication; 3) The impact of idiomatic expressions on cultural insight; 4) Changes in self-perception and cultural identity through language learning; and 5) The development of empathy and cultural relativism. Quantitative data indicated a strong positive correlation between language proficiency and measures of cultural appreciation. Qualitative analysis provided rich insights into the nuanced ways language shaped the awardees’ cross-cultural experiences. This research contributes to our understanding of the intricate relationship between language and culture in international education contexts. It offers valuable implications for enhancing student exchange programs and promoting global citizenship through targeted language and cultural learning strategies.

Abstract

This recent research was conducted to examine the effectiveness of textual enhancement on the students’ grammar achievement, in this case passive voice. Two kinds of instruction were implemented to two groups. The first instruction was enhanced instruction which consisted of textual enhancement and rule explanation, and the other instruction was explicit only instruction which consisted of rule explanation only. The study used quasi-experimental research design. A test was used in the pre-test and post-test to get the students’ score as the main data to be compared. From the result of the test analysis, finding shows that textual enhancement contributed a significant effect on the students’ passive voice achievement. Moreover, from the result of the questionnaire as the supporting instrument, the textual enhancement was more effective to be implemented to those which were considered as the low achievers than those considered as the high achievers. The students were more aware, focus, and easier in recognizing the pattern of passive voice

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Google Translate are often used by students to help them to find ideas, write, translate, and even organize the ideas. These applications can support learning, yet many teachers have noticed that students are using them excessively. This study aims to look at university English teachers’ perceptions and responses toward students’ overuse of AI tools in asynchronous learning contexts. This study employed a narrative inquiry approach. The source of the data was five narratives from five university teachers reflected on real situations when they suspected students were overusing AI. The narratives were then thematically analysed to identify emerging patterns and emotional responses. The findings of this research highlight some emotional and ethical dilemmas that teachers experienced, the signs they noticed in student work, and the strategies they used to deal with the problems, and he strategies they employed to promote responsible AI use among students. This study also shows that teachers are trying to balance the use of AI as a helpful tool, not a replacement for learning. It also suggests clearer policies from the institutions, better digital ethics education for the students, and stronger support for teachers in today’s AI era.
