Abstract

Law and Literature movement has been developing in western countries since the first half of the twentieth century as the response of the isolation of law from other disciplines and the idea of humanizing law to have optimal function for the betterment of  social order. This movement exerts great potentials in developing methods of teaching and interpreting legal texts resulting in the betterment of the performance of the law makers and the deeper understanding of law. The isolation also  happens in Indonesia; however, there is not  obvious  echo of the movement  in Indonesia. There is no place of  literature in Indonesians law. Under the movement of law and literature, this qualitative research aims not at finding out the reason of excluding literature from law; instead it aims at demontrating and promoting that literature could give contribution in   understanding and producing humanistic legal texts in Indonesia.  Taking available data by heuristic model and comparative and descriptive analysis, this research concludes that literary works could provide sources of  learning and understanding  law, and  literary theories could be applied in improving the making of more humanistic legal texts in Indonesia.

Abstract

There are three views are shown in the movement of Indonesia in responding to the arrival of Japan to Indonesia. First, they welcome and support the arrival of Japan considering the success of Japan drove the Dutch. Second, they have not determined the attitude of supporting or opposing. In this case, they still want to see how Japan would run his administration in Indonesia. Third, they oppose the presence of Japan, although not yet dared to take the fight. Those who oppose the Japanese arrivals in Indonesia consists of two groups, namely (1) of the aristocratic, ambtenaar, and government employees, and (2) the movement of the fighters who put the government of Japan as an imperialist occupation. How is the real politics of the Japanese occupation government in carrying out its colonial administration in the colonies? With the underlying research on the Asia Raja newspapers (April 29, 1942 to September 7, 1945), this paper tries to reveal the political government of Japan in the socio-cultural and literature. How is the newspapers used the Japanese occupation government to gain public support for Indonesia in the face of Greater East Asia war?

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the concept of hegemony of a drama entitled Man and Superman. The play is written by a social and political activist in which contains important lessons for social change. For that reason, the drama is regarded as a propaganda led by the author for making changes in the society. This study uses sociological theory, especially Antonio Gramsci's theory,  Hegemony. By using this theory, it is expected that the relationship between the literature and the condition of the society at that time that triggers the birth of this work as well as the author’s hopes and expectation would be understood. Through this approach, it is expected that the norms and educational values embodied in the drama would be revealed and understood.

Abstract

Social patriarchy is a gender-biased hegemonic value that is structured for the benefits of men but unfortunately disadvantages women. Lasiyah, the protagonist of Bekisar Merah and Belantik, and Hester Prynne, the protagonist of The Scarlet Letter, experienced those hegemonic values that were oppressive, from their patriarchal societies i.e. Java and Puritans. By using the theories of both Hegemony and Comparative Literature, this discussion reveals the two protagonists’ similar silent resistance against the hegemonic values in that this brought them to become new persons with new personality and identity. They were similarly reborn. Both women had comparable factors driving them to conduct silent resistance: pride, dignity, and love. Woman, who is in general considered weak and powerless, is in fact strong and powerful.

Abstract

Abstract

The second feminist wave in the 1960s has influenced feminists to increase their campaign against patriarchy in almost all areas. One of the areas which has made women very vulnerable is the issue of women in cinema. This article investigates some changes in the representation of women in cinema by comparing four movies: Stepford Wives (1975), Orlando (1992), When Night Is Falling (1995), and Stepford Wives (2004). This study was conducted by using modern hermeneutics method. The results indicate that these four films appear to contain three changed aspects regarding women, that is, the equality of work, the expression of sexual identity, and the image of ‘higher-education-woman’. The films also show that some aspects in the representation of women, such as the expectation of motherhood, the myth of sexuality, and the position of women as victims, remain unchanged.

Abstract

This study investigates the meanings of English loanwords in Indonesian sport texts. The data analyzed in this study were taken from sport articles of an Indonesian newspaper in 2010 and 2011. Their meanings in the text were compared to those in English dictionaries, sport glossary and KBBI 2008 using Nida’s componential analysis of meaning (Nida, 1975:32-67). The results showed that most of the English loanwords in the Indonesian sport articles had their meanings unchanged and some others experienced semantic changes. The results imply that some revision should be made to the meanings of some English loanwords in KBBI 2008.
