Abstract

Semiotics, which is the science of signs, has become an increasingly interesting interdisciplinary area of study. As such, semiotics can also be used as both structural and pragmatic approach for translation studies, especially for studies in which meanings are difficult to comprehend including symbolic texts. This paper aims to uncover the role of semiotics in the translation of symbolic languages, especially religious texts. The study employs descriptive qualitative method to describe and interpret the data in the form of an analysis of symbolic text translation. This is to uncover the various attitudes and perspectives about the roles of semiotic science in the translation of religious texts. The findings of this study indicate that the semiotic perspective is able to reveal the dimensions of referential or conceptual meaning of the symbols through the appearance of a supplementary component, which connects literal and figurative meanings conventionally. This effort is carried out through the use of structural semiotic analysis tools, namely by exploring the relationships between symbolic meanings, both syntagmatically and paradigmatically.

Abstract

Indonesia's education is heavily focusing on developing students' good characters. Character values can be explored from the legacy of the previous generations through old scriptures. Of many genres of Javanese scriptures containing character values are the wulang scripts, such as Suluk Candra, written by Prince Wijil Kadilangu  and stored  in  Museum Rekso Pustaka Mangkunegaran Library. This article explores the character values depicted by  the  manuscript  and  contextualizes  them  with  today's  education.  The present study employs the principles of philology and the interpretation of texts. The working principle of philology aims to produce a text edition, while interpretation aims to analyze the content of the text. It is found that Suluk Candra is a script containing Islamic values, teaching at least four ethics that can be contextualized with the world of education in the current 4.0 era. On the ethical values, there are ethics to the king/ leader/ state, ethics to teachers, ethics to fellow human beings, and ethics to oneself. Besides, there are also values of character education in Suluk Candra. Those character values are relevant to the present day, including the love of science, logical thinking, critical, creativity, innovation, religiosity, honesty, and nationalism.

Abstract

For centuries, Muslims in the Malay Archipelago have played a significant role in the development and advancement of Islamic civilization worldwide. Numerous scholars from the region have emerged and made substantial contributions to building Islamic civilization in various fields of Islamic knowledge. Among the most important contributions of scholars in the Malay Archipelago is their participation in the development of the Arabic language and literature. This can be seen from several books they have written, including in the field of linguistics and Arabic literature, to contribute to the development and dissemination of Arabic language and literature within the Islamic world, especially in the Malay Archipelago.Minangkabau scholars in some of their works have attempted to create new forms within the structure of Arabic poetry, such as the poetic creations found in the works of Sheikh Muhammad Sa'ad Munka, Sheikh Abdul Hamid bin Ahmad Al-Khatib Al-Manangkabawi, Sheikh Ismail Al-Manankabawi, and Sheikh Muhammad Said Bonjol. In addition to producing works with very high aesthetics, these Minangkabau scholars also introduced creative aspects in the composition of their poetry, especially in terms of rhythm and rhyme, which were not even brought forth by classical Arab poets considered the golden age of Arabic literature itself. Therefore, the main issue in this article is the creative forms of expression of Nusantara scholars in the rhythm and rhyme of the verses they create. The author employs Ahmad Shaib's Uslub theory, which states that every poet has a distinct style in expressing their ideas reflected in their choice of words, sentence structures, metaphorical language, rhythm, and rhyme.
