Abstract

This study explores integrating social digital platforms into a competency-based curriculum for the support of academic and non-academic competencies in secondary school. Utilizing a mixed-methods study, quantitative data were collected through 300 respondents utilizing a structured questionnaire and qualitative data were obtained from semi-structured interviews. Statistical analyses established high positive relationships between social media intensity and collaboration (r = 0.62, p < 0.01), creativity (r = 0.58, p < 0.01), and digital literacy, and multiple regression showed that institutional support and digital engagement significantly predicted levels of competency attainment, with digital engagement being the more powerful predictor. Qualitative findings indicated a preference for simple-to-access platforms such as WhatsApp, together with challenges including poor teacher training and disruption by non-educational content. The study addresses a significant literature gap by systematically incorporating trendy social media into competency-based education within the relatively under-researched Indonesian secondary school context. The research also broadens the DigCompEdu framework in relation to informal digital social aspects and provides tangible recommendations for policymakers on content design for adaptable curricula, teacher training and infrastructure readiness. Existing internationally, the findings present evidence that can be utilized in countries with a prospective agenda or desire to utilise digital technologies to design for 21st Century skills and stimulate education transformation.

Abstract

Researchers on the role of student engagement in social media were building upon existing research to construct participatory curriculum in the digital learning habitat of higher education students. The paradigm employed for this study was Participatory Action Research and Design-Based Research, as the work included 30 undergraduate students for a six-week learning intervention. Data collection methods included digital ethnography, semi-structured interviews, as well as WhatsApp interactions and Discord analyses. Thematic analysis with NVivo yielded three themes: active engagement and peer initiative; co-construction of curriculum and salience of content; and challenges of digital learning. Thus, it follows that students had taken the initiative of starting intellectual discussions, as well as suggesting or co-constructing the content of the curriculum as a community endeavor. Their feedback directed the learning process to be student-centered and contextualized. Although these have been recognized as strengths, some of the challenges were observed in the form of digital fatigue, distraction from non-academic content, and differences in digital literacy. This study makes a contribution to theory by extending the participatory curriculum concept into digital community spaces and, more practically, developing a model that would include student voice in planning curricular stands through social media. The findings further suggest that when put to intentional use, social media might be a co-creation space to support inclusive, flexible, and reflexive curriculum development in a digital age.

Abstract

This research investigates how social media reconstructs cultural identity for marginalized ethnic groups in Indonesia while paying attention to issues of visibility, cultural resistance, and algorithms. A qualitative approach was used to gather data from 18 participants from Eastern Indonesia’s indigenous communities and the Minangkabau diaspora through in-depth interviews, digital ethnography, and document analysis. Following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) framework, the analysis demonstrated three themes: digital visibility as a social recognition tool, cultural narratives as resistance, and algorithmic representation limits. The analysis reveals social media to be a significant area for sharing and contesting alternative narratives, especially alternative narratives that push back against the stereotypes imposed by mainstream media. However, social media algorithms, while alluring and innocent, minimize intricate cultures to simplistic symbols, revealing the seemingly irredeemable quality of being concurrently captivating and an exculpatory space, in a bad way. The research offers the concept of "algorithmic negotiation" as a theoretical contribution, emphasizing the degree to which the community could navigate the algorithmic systems of measures. Practically, the research suggests cultural policy makers and individuals in the technology industry to deliberately create constructs that challenge cultural hegemony. These findings contribute to the discourse on Indonesia while also situating it within a global context.

Abstract

Biology education in senior high school plays a pivotal role in shaping students’ scientific literacy, particularly in understanding abstract physiological concepts such as the human respiratory system. However, students often face difficulties in comprehending the dynamic processes of respiration when learning is limited to static images and conventional teaching methods. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of interactive biology animation media in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding of the respiratory system. Employing a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 60 eleventh-grade students divided into an experimental group and a control group. Data were collected through pretest and posttest assessments, observation sheets of student engagement, and validated test instruments. The findings reveal that students in the experimental group, who were taught using interactive animation media, demonstrated significantly higher posttest scores compared to those in the control group. The mean N-Gain score of the experimental group (0.68) was higher than that of the control group (0.47), categorized as medium to high improvement. In addition, student engagement was observed to be more active in the experimental group, with greater participation in questioning, answering, and discussion activities. These results support Mariana’s cognitive theory of multimedia learning and highlight the pedagogical value of technology-based media in science education. The study concludes that interactive animation media is an effective tool to improve students’ understanding of abstract biology concepts, particularly the respiratory system. Despite the limited sample size and scope, the research contributes both theoretically and practically by providing empirical evidence for integrating digital media in classroom practice and offers recommendations for further studies with larger and more diverse populations.

Abstract

This study examined parental strategies in fostering children’s literacy habits in the digital era within urban families. A qualitative case study design was employed, involving 12 families with elementary–school–aged children. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, limited observations, and supporting documentation, and were analyzed using thematic analysis through systematic coding, categorization, and theme development. The findings identified four principal strategies: structuring a home literacy environment, negotiating digital device use, positioning reading as a relational activity, and adapting literacy routines to time constraints shaped by urban work patterns. The results indicated that sustained literacy habits were formed through integrated, dialogic, and adaptive practices rather than rigid technological control. Family literacy in the digital era emerged as a socially negotiated practice embedded in everyday routines and influenced by urban dynamics. The study contributes conceptually to the development of the home literacy environment framework in digital contexts and offers practical implications for family-based literacy programs.

Abstract

Abstract

Educational inequality has been a long-term issue in urban marginalized communities, particularly in developing countries where education in the formal sector is not always accessible. Social media, which is otherwise considered a communication platform, is also being utilized as an informal study area. The present research explores how Indonesian urban marginalized communities utilize social media as a means of promoting educational equality by promoting digital learning activities at the community level. Using qualitative case study design, 21 participants' data were gathered using digital observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation of community content. Participation patterns, content development, and learning practices were examined using thematic analysis via NVivo software. Results indicate that media such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and TikTok are not only used for purposes of communication but also for educational content generation and sharing as per local demand. An active culture of peer learning, family nurturing, and mentoring has enabled the development of grassroots digital learning ecosystems. Social media is posited by research to serve as a micro-ecosystem that supports inclusive and contextualized learning among marginalized communities. The research moves the general discussion on community digital practices and emphasizes the need to redefine social media as an appropriate means through which educational inclusion and innovation can be achieved.

Abstract

This study examines the motives behind college students' use of social media as a response to academic stress using Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological perspective. Academic stress has become a common experience among university students due to academic demands such as assignments, group projects, research activities, and thesis writing. This research employed a qualitative phenomenological approach. Data were collected in May 2026 through open-ended questionnaires distributed digitally to 39 respondents from various universities and academic levels. The findings show that 87.2% of respondents frequently used social media when experiencing academic pressure. TikTok (64.1%), Instagram (46.2%), and YouTube (7.7%) were the most commonly used platforms, primarily accessed for entertainment and emotional distraction. Based on Schutz’s concepts of because motive and in-order-to motive, this study identified two layers of motivation behind students’ actions. Because motive refers to habitual and reflexive behavior shaped by previous experiences and digital habits, while in-order-to motive refers to students’ goals of seeking entertainment, calming their minds, improving mood, and temporarily relieving emotional pressure. The study also found that most respondents perceived social media as effective for short-term emotional relief, although excessive use often led to procrastination and increased academic pressure. This research contributes to the study of digital behavior and social phenomenology by providing a qualitative understanding of students’ subjective experiences in using social media as a coping mechanism for academic stress.

Abstract

The issue of stunting is one of  the problems that threatens the quality of human sesources (HR) in Indonesia. One contributing factor is the early introduction of complementary feeding providing complementary foods before the age of six months. Social influence from close family members and community  figures also plays a significant role in shaping parental behaviors, leading to the continued prevalence of early complementary feeding practices in Indonesia particularly in Bangkalan Regency. This study aims to map the social behaviors associated with early complementary feeding in Bangkalan Regency. A qualitative research methodology was employed, incorporating in-depth interviews, field observations, and supporting documentation that supportsthe research being conducted by the researcher. The results of the study show that many people in Bangkalan Regency still practice early complementary feeding for toddlers under 6 months of age. This is due to parents’ lack of understanding about fulfilling their children’s nutritional needs, as well as being influenced by the socio-cultural constructs in community life and the role of the family in decision-making regarding infant feeding, which increases the risk of stunting in children. The results of this research are expected to serve as a reference for stakeholder, particularly the government and health workers, in developing nutritional intervention programs.

Abstract

Beach litter is not only a visible waste problem but also a pedagogical and moral issue that reflects how people learn to relate to coastal environments in public space. This article examines the causes and consequences of beach litter through Henry David Thoreau’s ecological thought, public pedagogy, moral learning, and environmental character formation. Using a theory-informed qualitative literature review, the study synthesizes peer-reviewed journal articles, academic books, and selected policy-oriented publications on marine litter, pro-environmental behavior, environmental education, and sustainability pedagogy. The review shows that beach litter is driven by convenience-seeking behavior, weak social norms, inadequate waste infrastructure, limited ecological awareness, and a broader culture of disposable consumption. It also finds that beaches function as informal pedagogical spaces where conduct is modeled, observed, and socially normalized. Thoreau’s emphasis on simplicity, attentiveness, moral restraint, and respectful coexistence with nature provides an ethical lens for interpreting these dynamics. The article argues that lasting change requires more than awareness alone. Effective responses must integrate experiential education, visible stewardship, supportive infrastructure, community participation, and value-oriented public communication to strengthen environmental responsibility and ecological character.
