Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of mining industry expansion on customary territories in Indonesia, focusing on ecological and social aspects. Using a qualitative approach and a critical paradigm, this research seeks to uncover the power relations underlying extractivist practices and how they marginalize local communities while damaging the ecological systems that sustain their livelihoods. Data were collected through field studies, participatory observation, satellite imagery analysis, and a review of legal and policy documents. The study areas include several vulnerable small islands in Indonesia, such as Pulau Gag (West Papua), Pulau Wawonii (Southeast Sulawesi), and Pulau Gebe (North Maluku), as well as other regions such as Kalimantan, East Halmahera, Southwest Maluku, Riau Islands, and Bengkulu. The findings reveal that mining activities have led to significant environmental degradation, including deforestation, soil and water pollution, and the disruption of local biodiversity. Socially, mining has triggered the displacement of Indigenous communities, land conflicts, and the erosion of cultural practices rooted in harmonious relationships with nature. This analysis reinforces previous studies’ findings that extractive development models based on anthropocentrism and colonial logic are the leading causes of ecological crises and structural inequalities in Indigenous territories. The main contribution of this study is the articulation of a counter-narrative to the dominant technoscientific discourse in natural resource development. Through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates ecological, social, and cultural dimensions, this research highlights the urgency of decolonizing environmental governance toward a more just, participatory, and sustainable framework.

Abstract

This study examined students’ perceptions and digital literacy self-efficacy toward AI-based writing feedback systems in an English language learning context at a technology-oriented higher education institution. The increasing use of automated writing tools, such as grammar checkers and AI writing assistants, has encouraged students to rely on machine-generated feedback during early revision stages. However, their ability to interpret and apply AI suggestions varies depending on their digital literacy and evaluative skills. An explanatory sequential mixed-method design was employed, beginning with a quantitative survey followed by qualitative interviews. Seventy-two students completed the questionnaire, and ten participated in semi-structured interviews. Quantitative results indicated generally positive perceptions of AI feedback systems (M = 3.89, SD = 0.54), particularly in ease of use and initial revision support. Digital literacy self-efficacy was moderately high (M = 3.74, SD = 0.49), although confidence in distinguishing between accurate and inaccurate recommendations was lower. A weak positive correlation (r = 0.32) was found between perception and self-efficacy. Interview findings supported the survey results and highlighted three themes: AI as an initial correction tool, the need for contextual interpretation, and cautious reliance on AI-generated suggestions. Overall, the study emphasises the importance of integrating AI literacy and critical evaluation skills into writing instruction to ensure that AI-based feedback functions effectively as a supportive, rather than substitutive, tool in academic writing.

Abstract

The rapid digitalization of education during the pandemic has brought new challenges and opportunities for student well-being. This study explores how affective-based learning strategies can support students’ emotional health in digital learning environments. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research involved in-depth interviews, online classroom observations, and analysis of digital documents such as teaching materials and learning platform communications. The participants were teachers and students from secondary and higher education who had experience with affective learning practices, including mindfulness sessions, emotional reflection, and informal discussion forums. Thematic analysis revealed three key findings: first, students felt acknowledged and emotionally supported when given space to share their feelings; second, the integration of mindfulness practices, such as breathing exercises, helped reduce digital stress and improve focus; and third, digital empathy manifested through emojis, encouraging messages, and informal peer interactions played a critical role in maintaining emotional connection. However, challenges such as digital inequality and screen fatigue were also identified. This study contributes theoretically by reinforcing the role of emotional presence in digital pedagogy and practically by offering actionable strategies for educators to design well-being-oriented learning. The findings affirm that affective strategies are not supplementary but essential to sustaining mental health in online education. Limitations include the small sample size and limited observation of non-verbal cues. Future research is recommended to expand on these insights through longitudinal and mixed-method approaches.

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into higher education has opened new opportunities to enhance Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) through AI-generated feedback. This study investigates the effectiveness of automated, real-time feedback in supporting students’ metacognitive processes of planning, monitoring, and reflection. Using a quasi-experimental mixed-method design, 124 undergraduate students were divided into experimental and control groups, with only the experimental group receiving AI-generated feedback through a university Learning management system. Data were collected via pre- and post-tests using the adapted Indonesian version of the MSLQ questionnaire, system log analytics, and semi-structured interviews. The results revealed a significant increase in SRL scores for the experimental group (average improvement of 0.67 points, p < 0.01, Cohen’s d = 0.62) and higher weekly engagement (rising from 65 to 91) compared to the control group. The AI feedback system achieved 87.4% accuracy in classifying Learning errors. Interview findings highlighted three key themes: students perceived the feedback as accurate and motivating, valued its immediacy, but also expressed concerns about its impersonal nature. These findings demonstrate that AI-generated feedback can effectively scaffold learner autonomy while complementing human facilitation. This study contributes both theoretically by linking SRL frameworks to AI-supported Learning and practically by offering insights into designing feedback systems that balance technological efficiency with pedagogical sensitivity.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of neuroscience-informed instructional design in STEM education, emphasizing the role of cognitive load management in enhancing learning outcomes. Using a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design, the research involved 60 high school students divided into experimental and control groups. The instructional design for the experimental group was developed based on Cognitive Load Theory and neuroscience principles such as chunking, dual coding, and attention-focused scaffolding. Data were collected through standardized tests, EEG headbands, and attention trackers to measure both cognitive performance and neurobiological responses. Results showed that students in the experimental group achieved significantly higher posttest scores, with an average improvement of 25 points compared to the control group (p < 0.05; large effect size). EEG data further indicated that the experimental group demonstrated higher and more consistent levels of cognitive focus throughout the learning sessions. These findings highlight the importance of aligning instructional strategies with brain-based principles to optimize STEM learning, particularly in cognitively demanding contexts. The study contributes a practical framework for neuroscience-informed pedagogy and provides empirical evidence of its effectiveness in reducing cognitive overload while improving student engagement.

Abstract

The post-pandemic shift toward hybrid learning environments has introduced significant challenges in maintaining student motivation and retention. This study proposes an integrated model combining gamification and learning analytics to address these issues in higher education. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 64 undergraduate students divided into control and experimental groups over one academic semester. The experimental group engaged with a customized Moodle-based learning system featuring gamification elements—such as points, badges, and leaderboards—and real-time analytics dashboards powered by xAPI and Learning Record Stores. Quantitative data were collected using pretest-posttest instruments (MSLQ and SCEQ) and analyzed using paired and independent-samples t-tests, correlation analysis, and regression analyses. Qualitative insights from student interviews supported the quantitative findings. Results showed a statistically significant improvement in both motivation and retention among students exposed to the integrated system. The study contributes to the growing body of research on adaptive learning by demonstrating how combining motivational game mechanics with actionable data insights can enhance student engagement in hybrid classrooms. These findings have practical implications for digital pedagogy and institutional strategies in the evolving post-pandemic educational landscape.

Abstract

It has transformed the way that students can access information and how they can engage in social activities, effectively making digital platforms such as YouTube and TikTok the norm in their lives. However, the fact remains that these platforms have not been optimized for the education of social values. This study aims to analyze how effectively a digital platform is used as a medium for strengthening social values among junior high school (SMP) students. Mixed methods with a sequential explanatory design were used. 120 students responded to the quantitative survey, and 12 students were interviewed qualitatively to get their experiences on accessing socially valuable digital content. This study establishes that YouTube is the most capable platform for transmitting value concepts such as empathy, tolerance, and cooperation by means of visual and narrative content. The study reports a strong, positive correlation between the extent of exposure to social content and change in students' social attitudes (r = 0.604, p < 0.001), with regression analysis further explaining 36.1% of variation in attitude change as a function of the intensity of social content access. This study is novel in its concentration on the junior high school age group, a largely neglected area in the field, and in taking an integrative approach to measuring how digital platforms impact student attitudes. On the practical side, the conclusions of this study propose character education strategies in digital media that are contextualized for the current generation of students.
